Lucas’s POV

“Lucas!” Alex was gripping me tightly, trying to calm me down, and prevent me from damaging my hands which were pretty banged up already, but I couldn’t be controlled, not right now. I was a raging beast, ready to rip apart anything within my reach.

“Take him outside. He can’t stay here. I’ll call you if any updates arrive” I heard mom tell Alex emotionally.

“Come on, Lucas. Let’s go buddy” Alex said soothingly as he lifted me up with David supporting me from the other side.

My voice got hoarse from all the screaming and growling and it became just raspy, low-pitched, whimpers full of pain, internal suffering, and heartbreak.

I let them drag me without paying attention to where they were taking me.

They sat me down on a wide bench outside the hospital and sat on either sides of me.

“She’s the bravest girl I’ve ever met” said Alex sincerely next to me. I tore my gaze from the ground and looked sideways to see him staring at me intensely.

“And because of that braveness, you need to have more faith in her to make it through this as well. You can’t fall apart now. She needs you strong now more than ever”

“She doesn’t need me, Alex. If she makes it through this by some miracle, she should hate me and stay as far away from me as possible because I fucking failed her!” I said harshly.

He gave me a hard look and said strictly “You didn’t fail her! You saved her life. Do you think if you let her go back then, when you took her to Fairbanks instead of convincing her to stay with you, that she would have been safe? She probably would have died within a week out there. Her brother would have tracked her down and made her go through a lot worse things than we just saw in that video. Being with you saved her, gave her life a new meaning, a family, love. You gave here everything Lucas. And she fucking loves you so much too! She told you all that in the car dammit! Weren’t you listening? If the clock turned back and she knew what was going to happen then, she would have still chose this. She would have still chose you. You didn’t fail her Lucas, you brought her back to life. In every sense of the word”

“What if….what if she…doesn’t make it?” I asked vulnerably.

He gripped my shoulder tightly and said fiercely “She’ll make it. And she’s going to need you to be strong when she wakes up, to get her through what happened. So you need to pull your shit together, Lucas. Be there for her instead of falling apart like this”

He had some point. At least I was able to get to her in time. If she had left on her own and took the other choice, or if I gave up on trying to convince her to stay with me, she would have definitely been killed then.

I nodded my head, wiped my tears away, and started taking deep, long breaths.

David patted my back and said lightly “Dude, you should be fucking proud of her, and have a lot more faith in her than that. I mean she literally kicked ass back there. Took on like three guys at the same time. She’s a fighter through and through and that’s how we all know that she’s going to get through this as well”

I smiled slightly, remembering how fucking fierce and strong she looked in full avenging angel mood that I had only a slight glimpse of a few times in the last couple of months.

“Hey April wasn’t bad either. She surprised the hell out of me. Angelina is one hell of a trainer” said Alex in amusement.

“Yeah! I mean they were pretty much holding their own pretty damn well before we showed up. Each one of them along with mom and Jenny. Each of them played quite a big role to save themselves” agreed David smugly.

“Real Snow material, I’m telling you” murmured Alex contentedly.

After about ten minutes of calming silence, I was ready to go back in there and be there for her the way I should be.

“Let’s go wait for updates with the rest. I’m feeling better now” I said firmly as I stood up.

“Let’s go” agreed Alex.

We went back inside and joined the others.

I sat next to mom who immediately took me in her arms and brought my head over to her chest in a soothing manner. Murmuring comforting, encouraging things in my ear.

An hour later, just before I was about to lose my damn mind again from the constant, nagging worrying for the lack of any sort of news, the doctors finally emerged out of the double doors and headed our way.

We all stood up at once, the tension in the air increasing ten folds. Their steps toward us seemed to stretch forever to me, I couldn’t wait for them to come over, I shortened the distance between us by meeting them halfway and asking right away “How is she?”

One of the doctors; who looked to be in his early fifties, spoke confidently and professionally “She made it out of surgery with stable stats. The blood transfusion gave her the push she needed to pull through. The stab wound cut through her stomach which is the least dangerous place considering the other vital organs that could have made the situation a lot worse. However, the knife must have nicked her abdominal aorta and that’s what caused the severe bleeding. It was our main concern as we rushed her into surgery to try to control the bleeding and prevent the small tear from getting bigger. We were able to fully repair it. She’s not going to suffer from any long term complications. One of her ribs is broken, we had an x ray taken of her chest after we closed her up. But it’s just a small fracture. She needs complete bed rest for the next two weeks in order to allow her rib and stab wound to heal properly. No strenuous activities before that, and she should be fine. She also needs regular check ups to make sure her sutures are not getting infected and that it’s healing properly. I’ll also prescribe her pain killers to manage the pain”

All of us breathed out huge sighs of relief at hearing everything the doctor said.

Multiple questions fired at the same time to the doctor.

“When will she wake up?”

“Can I see her?”

“Can she be transferred?”

“When can she be discharged?”

The doctor holds his hands out and answers us calmly “She needs rest, so only one visitor at a time. It will take a few hours for her to wake up and even then, she will still be a little out of it considering the trauma her body went through. It’s best if she spends the night and you can transfer her early tomorrow back to your town. If her condition is stable enough I might discharge her home with the strict instructions that she doesn’t move out of bed for the next three days unless necessary”

“Other questions?” he asked nicely.

I said genuinely “Thank you so much for saving her life. You just gave me my world back doctor, I’ll be forever in your debt. My name is Lucas Snow, and if you ever face some kind of non medical problem or something, don’t hesitate to contact me. I believe you are familiar with our town?”

He gave me a knowing smile “Just doing my job, son. But if I ever face your kind of problems, I’ll be sure to give you a call”

“Can I see her?” I asked warily.

“Sure, they must have transferred her to her room by now, follow me Mr. Snow” he said kindly.

I was anxious to see her for myself, breathing, alive. To erase the image of her lifeless body when she died momentarily in my arms.
