Lucas’s POV
I could see the battle she was fighting against her self to keep her walls solid around me, blocking any and all attempts from me to bring them down.
I couldn’t hold my stupid mouth from requesting a kiss from her, it was completely out of my control. Something about her just keeps calling to me, luring me to her, and I just stopped fighting it a long time ago and fully succumbed to it. Wish she would do the same, but she was holding her own urges better than me.
“We probably shouldn’t” she whispered and I could sense how hard those words were for her because a big part of her was yearning for that kiss like me.
I sighed softly and said soberly “Well, I should probably let you get ready for the day. We still on for training and gun practice?”
She raised her eyebrows “I didn’t realize you’re part of training now, too” she said in wonderment.
“I can’t let you and April practice in that gym alone, so might as well get a little workout from it” I said huskily.
“You can just send someone else with us. You don’t have to rearrange your plans to accompany us everyday, I’m sure you have a lot of responsibilities what with being the leader of this town” she said smugly.
“Are you trying to get rid of me, Angel?” I asked her playfully with a grin on my face. She was so desperate to put any kind of distance from me, as much as she can manage and it wasn’t passing by me unnoticed.
“There is no getting rid of you, Lucas. I’m starting to gather that. I just don’t want you to tire yourself with our safety and neglect your duties to the town, that’s all” she said nonchalantly.
She was getting good and creative at the indifference game. Little does she know that I can see right through it. And soon enough, I’ll have her beg to spend more time with me, to come up with any excuse to have the pleasure of my company. Over confident? No. Just being realistic here…that’s all.
“Oh don’t worry, I’m an excellent multitasker. See you at breakfast, Angel” I said playfully as I got up from her bed and headed out of her room, closing the door firmly behind me.
Before my hand left the door handle of her room, my mom walked out of hers at the end of the hallway and froze when she saw me there.
Impeccable timing, mom!
I wasn’t doing anything inappropriate in there, but still, I’d have rather preferred if my sleepover remained between me and her only. Well, too late for that now.
She walked over until she stood in front of me and crossed her arms over her chest as she asked quizzically “Were you just coming out of Angelina’s room?”
“Yes, I slept in her room last night” I said firmly.
Her eyebrows almost reached her forehead as she said in a shocked tone “You slept in her room last night”
“Yes, I did”
She looked extremely conflicted to come up with her next response as she opened her mouth and closed it multiple times before she took my arm and dragged me towards my room.
Only after she closed the door behind her, did she turn and ask in a strained tone “Why… did you sleep in her room?”
I knew what was going on in her mind and why she couldn’t outright ask me what she wanted to know.
“She had a dreadful nightmare again in the middle of the night, and I happened to hear her in distress when I was walking into my own room, so I walked inside and woke her up. She broke apart in my arms that’s why I stayed the night with her, actually she asked me to, I didn’t force myself in anyway to stay in her room, don’t worry” I said firmly.
Her expression softened as she touched my cheek tenderly and said “I wasn’t worried, Lucas. I know the son I raised, honey. I was just so surprised that she even let you stay alone with her after the events of the past few days”
“Yeah, I think she’s warming up to me” I said smoothly.
“Well I’m glad she was able to get past your previous behavior” she said gratefully.
She narrowed her eyes and inspected me for a while before she asked carefully “You two….I mean…is there something going on… between you?”
Was it that obvious? Or was this one of her motherly magical moments where she happens to know things out of pure instinct?
How the hell do I tell her that I’m already falling for her right down to my very soul, while she keeps resisting her own feelings and pushing them away so stubbornly?
It takes me a little too long to answer and I see the light flicker in her eyes instantly “Do you really care for her, son? or is it just….” She begins asking nervously but I cut her off intensely “I care so much about her mom, I’m not playing with her feelings just for a fling”
“What about her? Did you tell her anything about how you’re feeling?” she asked warmly.
“There is something between us, mom. We’re both very much aware of it, but she’s too afraid to try and give us a chance. She still feels guilty and responsible for what happened to dad and…Alex and Jenny, and she’s scared of putting any of us in danger if anyone connected to Zade still tries to get to her. I tried convincing her to change her mind about leaving but she won’t budge” I confided heartily to her.
That felt so damn good to get off my chest. I seriously needed to talk to her without being aware of it.
“Well she still has nine days here with us. I’m sure she’ll come around soon, honey. Just don’t pressure her too much and keep showing her the sweet Lucas that you only show to us, the one that has the biggest heart and the softest side. She deserves to feel loved and cared for after everything she’s been through. She’s already feeling safe in your arms and asked you to stay with her when she could have asked you to call me over. I’d say your odds are already improving in your favor” she said lovingly.
“Thanks mom, I really needed this. I love you so much. Thank you for always supporting me and always standing by my side even though I really test your patience most of the time” I said sincerely before I hugged her tightly.
“I love you so much too dear. I’ll always love you, no matter what” she said tenderly before she kissed me on both cheeks.
She left me after that to take a shower while she went downstairs to prepare for breakfast.
Under that hot steaming shower, my mind went back to the warmth I felt last night that trumps this warmth seeping into me from the hot water by a great degree, having her in my arms all through the night, breathing her lavender, sweet, smell, and hearing her soft breathing as she slept soundly and trustingly against my chest.
It was the best feeling in the world. Nothing can ever measure up to sleeping next to my Angel. That’s right, mine, and only mine. I’ll make damn sure of that. I’ll go through hell and back for her, and for that moment when she finally accepts me into her heart fully, without a chance of me ever leaving that place.
