On The Border - Marry Him Or Die

Alex’s POV

I take him with me over to Mathew’s house.

His house was a few feet away from ours, on the same land, but had the privacy David wanted.

I knocked lightly on the door until Mathew opened it.

He looked between us in confusion.

“Can we borrow your house for a while Mathew? David and I have something private to talk about and we don’t want to be heard in our house” I said politely.

“Sure Alex, the house is all yours, let me grab my coat” he said right away.

He grabbed his coat from the nearby rack, put on his shoes, and left us all alone.

I gestured for David to follow me inside.

We settled in their small living room.

He nervously sat in the middle of the long couch, while I sat right in front of him on their wooden coffee table.

He seemed to be getting a last minute, second thoughts on saying whatever he wanted to say.

I supported my arms on my thighs and leaned closer to him.

“What do you want to talk about David? And why do you look like shit?” I asked tensely.

He held his hands together and started rubbing them nervously as he looked at me, half scared and half determined.

“There is something you need to know about….. Something that will…. Destroy your whole family. I have been living with this burden ever since I came here, and it was slowly beginning to eat at me day after day as I spend more time with you and your family. I can’t keep it in any longer. Especially before the smuggling operation today. I can’t let it go through as planned, because I will never be able to forgive myself if I let it happen” he said fiercely.

“If you let what happen?” I asked in a dangerous low voice.

Was he really doing this? Was he finally confessing everything and ratting out his father?

He takes a deep breath then says tensely “My father and Lord Z are working together. He was the one who smuggled your father’s shooter and pinned it on Patrick Walker. We smuggled him in our own car when we crossed the border and let him out before we reached the house”

I stare at him for a while comprehending the fact that he was telling me the truth, against all odds. He was knowingly putting his life in danger by confessing something fully knowing, whole heartedly that he will have to pay for it.

He notices my lack of proper reaction to that earth shattering confession. He knows he should have been on the ground by now with a broken jaw, or a broken nose, and gives me an incredulous look “You knew” he stated.

“What made you decide to tell me this?” I asked coldly.

He was still registering the fact that I was on to them and that him telling me what he thought was unknown to me, did him no good.

He gulped visibly and said sincerely “He plans to have you killed today. Make it seem like Lord Z played him and got his men inside the truck discreetly. He plans to have you all killed. You, Lucas, Mathew…. Everyone. I was supposed to play sick at the last second and stay home. He’s after the leadership and he became so blinded, he doesn’t care about sacrificing anyone to obtain it”

Nothing he was saying was surprising me in the slightest and he seemed to catch on to that.

“That’s not an answer to my question David” I said coldly.

I got up, leaned down, and put my hands on either sides of the sofa between his head. It caused him to back away and rest his back against the sofa, as a look of pure fear crossed his face.

“Why are you telling me all of this now?” I asked darkly.

It took him a few seconds to find his voice under the murderous look I was giving him.

“Because I can’t….. Betray you like this. Not after I have gotten to know you all for real. I never had a family before. It was always just me and my father. And he was always busy at work, I was always left alone. I never knew the true meaning of family. The warmth I felt between you was something I never experienced before. The way you stand up for each other, protect each other, even take bullets for each other, it was the way my father was supposed to protect his brother instead of murdering him, just like the way I saw Lucas take a bullet for you. He became so close to me, like a true brother, and I loved you all so much. I couldn’t….. I couldn’t support this anymore. I will never forgive myself for the part I already played by getting your father killed Alex, never. I have nightmares about that all the time, and I will be damned if I let anything happen to you too. That single betrayal weighed like tons inside me and I can’t carry any more weight on my conscience. My father is an evil soulless man but I am not like him, I can’t watch you all die without giving my own life to stop it”

By the time he finished confessing, his face was drenched in tears.

A big part of me believed in his sincerity, and the torment he was feeling from his conscience over what he has done.

But that doesn’t make him forgiven, not by a long shot.

Okay, he could have not said anything and kept his mouth shut. But instead, he risked being killed, sacrificed his own life and ratted on his father, so we don’t end up killed. That has to count for something.

“You do realize that the truth will not set you free David. That it will not save you. There are somethings in life that can never be forgiven for even if the person who committed them is remorseful. The only way you could have been forgiven was if you were forced into it, and you clearly weren’t. You had a choice, and you chose to help your father take away the most important person in all our lives. That… can never be forgotten nor forgiven” I said icily.

He gives me a determined, surrendered look as he says in a small voice “Do whatever you wish to do to me Alex. I deserve it. You’re right, I wasn’t forced. I was following behind the only man I’ve known my entire life, blind and oblivious to the real implications of the consequences behind what he had done. It was only after I saw those consequences with my own eyes that I realized the grave betrayal I participated in”

I backed off and sat back on the edge of the coffee table, staring intently at him.

His confession added no real value or new information to my plan.

It was all going down the way I already anticipated it would.

“Can I know how long you’ve known about all of this and how?” he asked curiously.

“It’s been only five days, as for the how, well that you can’t know” I said tightly.

I carried on fiercely “Since you decided to be all truthful and convince me I can trust the truth to always come out of your mouth, answer this, the man who was in charge of letting you pass through the border, was he in on it?”

He immediately shook his head and answered right away “He wasn’t involved. He wanted to check our trunk but my father convinced him that we were running late and that your father was asking him to hurry. That’s how we passed undetected”

Well, one less betrayal was confirmed at least.

“I assume you have it all worked out then? You’re already prepared to take them on?” he asked curiously.

“More than prepared, but I’ll leave that untold so you’d act surprised when you hear about it” I said sarcastically.

“I’ll do anything to help Alex. Anything” he promised sincerely, ignoring my sarcastic tone.

“If you want to help, I’ll need to tie you up and lock you in this house until it’s time for us to head out. You can help by being a cooperative, silent hostage” I said seriously as I stood up.

“Do whatever you have to do” he said in compliance.
