I cocked my head to the side as I stared at Charles. I fought the urge to look at Viktor. I didn’t want to draw the elders attention to my weakened mate. I needed his focus to remain on me. I needed it to stay this way. His words didn’t make sense. This was the first time I’ve seen him.
“What are you to me? Why would I be a regret of a stranger?” I asked.
“You were young when I dropped you off at Blood Moon,” Charles said.
My steps faltered and my brow furrowed as I processed his words. How did he know about the Blood Moon pack? How did he know about Ken’s pack? The only answer I came up with caused my blood to run cold. This only meant one thing.
“No,” I murmured.
“Yes. Your mother had been a lying whore! I had thought it weird that the Moon Goddess had mated me to a human. I loved her as she loved me, or so I fucking thought. Once upon a time, I thought I could be happy and be a family man. But then… you happened. I’d loved you. I was proud to be your father… but that all changed when I found out. After we had you, she told me the truth. She told me of the vile demonic blood that ran through her veins. I had been shocked, I thought I loved her, I thought she had been the one for me, but the Goddess hated me. She cursed me. Why? Why had she cursed me? What had I done to warrant such hate? She tied me to a witch!” Charles screamed.
No.
No. No.
No.
This can’t be true.
“No,” I breathed. “Yes,” Charles yelled.
The sound of the chains as they clinked together reminded me of who he stood over. I needed to get my mate away from him. I just needed to call on my flames and get closer, but I feared if I did he would hurt him.
“I didn’t hesitate. I killed her,” Charles said.
“How?” I asked.
My mind was back on the conversation. When I first went to Blood Moon the only thing I could remember was that I had been loved. When I thought of my mom I felt warmth. I remembered that I’d had loving parents. Knowing that he’d killed her put a crack in that feeling.
“My pack worked closely with the elders and we knew of the prophecy, everyone knew. So it wasn’t a question of if I would do what I needed to do, but when. I waited until we got you back from her sister,” Charles spat. “It rained that night but I knew what I needed to do. I made up my mind and after I put you in your room. She had betrayed me and I couldn’t have her getting in the way when I came for you. I strangled her in bed that night. It broke me but I did what I needed to for the greater good. I watched as the light drained from her eyes. I had wanted to mark her but I was glad I hadn’t. If I had I would of killed myself in the process. I was going to kill you next, that had been the plan, but when I stepped away from her on the bed, I turned and you were there. Your young innocent eyes stared at me in shock, in fear. I couldn’t do the one thing I needed to do. So I decided to get rid of you. I would come for you when I had the resolve. I couldn’t kill you as a child. I had loved and nurtured you since the day you were born. I couldn’t find it in me to kill you, no matter how evil I knew you were. I stepped away from my position as alpha. I left everything behind. The only thing I had left to do was leave you. I left you on the steps of Alpha Ken. I became an elder and spent the rest of my life in service to the people. I’ve regretted not killing you ever since,” Charles said.
I wasn’t going to stand still and listen to any of this. His words hurt and burned inside of me. I couldn’t hold it in. The flames burst from my palms and spread up my arms and down my body until I was covered in flames. I lifted my chin and looked at the sky as it licked up my spine and flowed through my hair. When I looked at the man standing in front of me, his eyes were wide with disgust and fear.
“You can’t think that this is right. You’re a monster, you’re a monster. I should have killed you as a child. You were a devil the entire time that wore a mask of innocence. I should have known what lurked beneath the surface. You’re an abomination,” Charles spat in disgust.
“Call me what you want, but the only reason you’re still alive is because you hold those chains in your hands,” I spat. “But it won’t keep you safe for much longer. Thanks for telling me the story of my life before Blood Moon, but you’re not my father. You’re nothing. You call me evil and point your finger at me, but you’ve probably never looked in the mirror. You’re the only evil I see here,” I said.
“The only regret I would have is killing you quickly. So I won’t. I’m going to kill you slowly, so slowly. It’s going to be so painful, you’ll beg me for death,” I promised.
I ran toward my father, the flames begged to burn and spread. He dropped the chain and hope burst in my chest as he darted toward me. His claws extended and his canines came out. From the corner of my eye I saw Clara run toward Viktor.
