Chapter 181: An Enemy From the Past
Chapter 181: An Enemy From the Past
Bryce dropped into the chair and the doctor got closer to ensure he was okay.
"Mr Moore, are you alright?" the doctor asked, pulled his stethoscope from around his neck and quickly started checking on Bryce.
Bryce just sat there lost for a while before his gaze focused on the doctor.
"Mr. Moore," the doctor called out, and Bryce stared at him. "Can you hear me?" the doctor asked, moving a finger in front of Bryce's face.
"Please look after my wife for me," Bryce said and stood up.
"Mr. Moore," the doctor called after him, but Bryce ignored him and took long strides towards the exit.
Bryce pulled his phone out and called Martin.
"Martin, bring the car around and pick me up," Bryce said sounding very cold.
"Yes, boss," Martin replied and Bryce waited for Martin in front of the hospital.
The Range Rover arrived and Bryce got inside. Martin was surprised to see Bryce with a bandage around the shoulder.
"Sir, what happened?" Martin asked with a surprised look plastered on his face.
"The war is not over. We are going to see an old friend," Bryce said, giving Martin Ian's address.
After a couple of minutes' drive, they arrived at Ian's apartment. Bryce got down and covered himself with his jacket. Martin followed him to the front door of the apartment and Bryce knocked on the door.
The door was opened and a young lady's face came into view.
"How may I be of help?" the lady asked politely.
"I am Bryce Moore, I am here to see Ian," Bryce said and the lady nodded.
"Please come in," the lady said and led Bryce and Martin into the house.
"Please make yourself comfortable," the lady said once they were in the living room with Martin and Bryce. "Please would you like anything to drink?" she asked.
"I am good," Bryce replied.
"I will go get Mr Ian," the lady said and exited the place.
Martin watched her walk out of the room and vanished at the end of the wall. A couple of minutes later, Martin saw a man appearing at the end of the wall. He walks towards them.
"Ah, Bryce, Bryce," Ian called out smiling. "What brings you to my humble abode?" he asked and dropped himself onto the three-in-one couch facing Bryce.
"Someone attacked my wife and me twice today. I want to know who?" Bryce went straight to the point.
"Wow, who will do that?" Ian asked not at all sounding like what Bryce had said was serious.
"How much?" Bryce asked clenching his teeth together and staring at Ian coldly.
"Half a million and you will have a name in 24 hours," Ian said smiling.
"I am not doing the highest bidder, Ian," Bryce said and Ian laughed.
"That is your problem," Ian said and Bryce pulled Martin's gun from its strap and aimed it at Ian.
"Wo! Wo! Wo!" Ian cried with both hands raised in surrender.
"I am not joking Ian. If you repeat what you did the last time, I will put a bullet between your eyes," Bryce threatened.
"Okay, okay," Ian said sounding serious. "I will get you the information you need," he said still with his hand up in the air.
"I will be back in 24 hours," Bryce said standing up.
He walked towards the exit and Martin followed him out of the house.
Outside, Bryce got inside the car and Martin got behind the wheel. Bryce was staring at his phone coldly.
"Once he brings the information, I will give you the account to make payment to him in 48 hours," Bryce said.
"Yes, boss," Martin replied. "Where are we going from here?" he asked.
"Let's head back to the hospital," Bryce said.
"Yes, boss," Martin replied and put the car into motion.
"What has the police said so far?" Bryce asked.
"Nothing for now. They only asked some questions and took the bodies away," Martin replied.
"Have someone keep an eye on the chief of police. Watch and report only," Bryce said.
"Yes, boss," Martin replied while keeping his eyes focused on the road.
The rest of the journey was done in silence. They soon arrived back at the hospital and Bryce got out of the car. He walked into the hospital and found out that Angela had been moved into a private ward on the second floor of the hospital.
Bryce walked into the ward and found Angela lying on the bed with a heart monitor and an oximeter on. He drew closer to the bed and stared down at her. He remembered her smiles when they signed the marriage certificate. His mind shifted to their time together at the restaurant rooftop. He thought everything was over. His eyes shifted to her belly. He was going to meet his son in a couple of months. He was this close but now he is gone. A tear formed in his eyes and he blinked it away. He went round the bed and sat down on the provided seat. Behind him was a couch and right behind the couch was the window. The heavy curtains hang freely behind the couch. The monitoring machines sat on the other side of the bed.
Bryce held Angela's hand in his and planted a kiss on the back of her hand.
"I am sorry I didn't protect you enough. I am going to find whoever did this and I will make them pay," Bryce said with pain as he battled to hold his tears preventing them from falling.
The night became very long. Bryce sat on the couch and soon fell asleep out of exhaustion.
The nurse walked in to check on Angela and Bryce woke up.
"Good morning Mr Moore," the nurse greeted and Bryce just stared at him coldly. "Would you like to come with me to the dressing room to have your wound checked or you prefer for someone to come do it here?" she asked.
"Let them come over," Bryce replied coldly.
"Yes, Mr Moore," the nurse acknowledged, checked the readings on the monitor machine for Angela and turned to Bryce again.
"You can talk to her. She can hear you even though she can't respond," the nurse informed Bryce but Bryce said nothing.
"I will take my leave," the nurse said and exited the room.
Another nurse walked in after a few minutes pushing a trolley. She moved the trolley closer to Bryce and Bryce removed his jacket. The nurse attended to his wound and rebandaged it before exiting the room.
Back at the apartment, Zora had also woken up but was still lying on her bed. There was a knock on the door and she invited the person in.
"Ma'am, breakfast is ready," the servant announced and Zora just nodded.
She dragged herself out of bed and took a shower. She found something simple to wear and exited her room. She stared briefly in the direction of Martin's room before heading for the staircase. She went down the staircase and was soon in the dining room. She realized the place setting was just for one.
"Did Mr and Mrs Moore go out this early?" Zora asked as she sat down behind the table.
"Mr and Mrs Moore did not return home yesterday," the servant replied.
"Okay," Zora said and cleared her throat. "And Martin?" she asked turning her cup to sit on the small plate.
"He left the apartment this dawn," the servant replied.
"Okay," Zora replied and quickly moved to look at the servant. "So I am here alone with you all?" she asked at the realization.
"Yes ma'am," the servant replied and Zora nodded.
She ate her food and went back to her room. She watched some movies on her phone and went online to browse through the news. She saw the news of a hospital attack and her eyes widened. She clicked to read about it and was shocked.
"Angela," Zora exclaimed.
The news spoke of an attack on Bryce and Angela twice the previous night but never mentioned if they were still alive or dead. She quickly dialled Martin's number but he didn't answer. She sent him a message and got a reply that Bryce and Angela were fine and in the hospital but Martin didn't tell her which hospital.
Zora instantly became worried and began pacing up and down her room. She sent Martin another message asking for the hospital but Martin did not reply.
The day slowly passed and it was soon night. Bryce was still in Angela's ward when his phone rang. He checked and it was Ian. He answered.
"Bryce I found the person behind it. It's a man named Ivan Davis. He is the only son of Matilda Davis. He is with the mafia group working with a man called Eduardo. His mother, Matilda, put him under the wings of Eduardo to be trained as the next Don," Ian said on the call. "I have sent the details to your email. You will find more in the report," he added.
"Ivan Davis," Bryce repeated the name in his head but soon ended Ian's call once he was done.
Bryce went into his email and opened the main Ian had sent him. He opened the attachment and his eyes widened when he saw Ivan's picture as a boy and what he looked like as an adult.
Bryce remembered Ivan from his school days. He never liked him because he was a bully. The day Bryce decided to teach Ivan a lesson for beating up a poor boy, Ivan never showed up at school again and he never heard of him again.
