Chapter 162: Checkmate - Part 3
Chapter 162: Checkmate - Part 3
It was dark, and the light providing visibility in the area was feeble. Some trees were on one side of the road, and the field leading to the abandoned house was at the end of the road. It appears the place used to be a fun park, but it was no longer in use. The building at the end of the road used to be the administrative block of the park.
Bryce hid behind one of the trees and watched Angela from there. Angela walked down the path through the spoilt green field towards the decapitated building trembling. Her heart was racing against her chest. She occasionally looked back as she walked towards the building not sure what awaited her there.
Bryce made another move from the tree he was hiding behind to the next tree on the stretch, using the dark shadows as a cover. His gaze was still fixated on Angela who was in the feeble light when he heard sirens. He shifted his gaze in the direction of the sound wondering why the police were coming in with so much noise. By the time he returned his gaze to where Angela was, she was gone. He came out from behind the trees.
"Angela," Bryce called out to her running towards the house but before he could finish crossing the street to use the small path, he was shot in the leg.
Bryce fell to the ground face first but he dragged himself towards the house. The police parked their cars and started moving in. Eduardo's men, open fire on the officers. All this while, they were behind the decapitated building.
Inside the building, a guard held Angela at gunpoint standing next to Zora who also had a gun pointing to her head.
The rest of the guards were shooting at the officers approaching the building. Bryce dragged himself on the floor towards the building while bullets continued to fly over his head.
Meanwhile, Martin and a team of officers had now arrived at the location and were moving in on foot. Just a couple of distance away, they heard the gunshots.
"Oh no, it has already started," Martin said.
"I know this place. There is another way in," one officer said and led the group of officers through another path on foot.
They ended up at the back of the huge park and entered from the angle boxing Eduardo's men in.
"You are surrounded, drop your weapon," the officer shouted, but Eduardo's men were not ready to drop their weapons.
They opened fire on the officers behind them but with officers shooting from the front and others shooting from behind, Eduardo's men appeared to be boxed in.
Bryce managed to get to the building with his injured leg. He rested his back on the wall, thinking of how to get in.
The four guards inside the building still had Angela and Zora.
"We are trapped here," one guard said to the other guard.
"We can only use these two as a way out," replied the other guard.
They had tied up Angela's hand to her back and tied a cloth around her lips. Zora was untied from the chair and just like Angela, her hands were tied behind her and they kept the cloth tied around her lips.
"Let's go," the guard yelled at Angela pushing her with his gun.
The four guards walked Angela and Zora to the door. One guard went to the door and unlocked it.
"I have Angela and Zora, if you shoot, they die," one guard yelled and Bryce heard it.
He was sitting on the floor with his back resting on the wall to the side of the building. He started dragging himself towards the front.
"Sir," Martin walked up to him.
"Angela is inside," Bryce said ignoring his pain. "I need to go in. I am the one they are looking for," he added but frowned. "Do you have a gun?" he asked.
"Yes, a pistol," Martin replied wondering what Bryce wanted to do with the gun.
"Let me have it and get out of this place," Bryce said and Martin gave him his pistol but didn't leave as Brycehads instructed.
Bryce started moving towards the end of the wall. He peeped to see the front side of the building and the door. He sat back down and Martin was right next to him. He frowned.
"I thought I asked you to leave," Bryce said.
"You are injured, boss. How can I leave you alone," Martin commented and Bryce stretched to peep at the front side of the building.
The guard pushed Angela out the door first and he followed her out holding a gun to Angela's head. Bryce stared at him, waiting to see if Zora would come out next. He didn't have to wait for long, as Zora was pushed out in like manner.
The two ladies walked with their hands tied behind them, a cloth tied around their lips and a gun nuzzled pressed to the back of their heads.
The remaining two guards also stepped out with their backs facing the two guards who had their guns aimed at Angela and Zora.
"Fuvk! If one goes down, Angela and Zora are dead," Bryce said beneath his breath.
"We have officers both at the back and the front. This person would not go far and they will be gunned down," Martin said.
The officers at the front had already seen the four guards with Zora and Angela but they remained hidden. Bodies were scattered all over the compound.
"Get a gun. We shoot them all down," Bryce said and Martin pulled his trousers up.
He retrieved a gun fastened to a holder fastened to his leg. Bryce was surprised to see Martin had two guns.
"Help me up," Bryce said and Martin did as requested.
Bryce leaned against the wall and suspended his injured leg.
"We take the two at the back and we take the two at the front at the same time," Bryce said and Martin nodded.
"On three," Bryce said and aimed at the guard at the back while Martin stood in front of Bryce aiming at the other guard.
"One, two, three," Bryce said and gunshots were heard going out at the same time.
The four guards dropped to the ground, setting Angela and Zora free. Bryce and Martin finally moved from the side of the building to the front. Martin untied Angela and removed the cloth first, then untied and removed the cloth from Zora's lips.
Angela quickly went to Bryce as the ambulance siren was heard getting closer to the place. The police went around checking the bodies lying on the ground motionless.
To Martin's surprise, Zora hugged and kissed him out of the blue. Martin was not expecting such a reaction from Zora and hence didn't know how to react to that. Bryce rescued him by calling out to him. This made him move away from Zora who kept a broad smile plastered on her face after the unexpected kiss she gave Martin.
"Martin, make sure you take care of George and Matilda. And find out where Mrs Anderson went," Bryce said to Martin.
"They have been picked from their homes as we speak," Martin replied staring at the phone screen. "They just made headlines," he said. "This is like checkmate," he added smiling.
The medical team attended to Bryce, Zora and Angela while the police cleared the place.
Back at the Moore family house, Devon was shocked to see the news of Matilda Davis and George being picked up by the police. He quickly called Susan.
"Have you seen the news?" Devon asked.
"Yes, what happened?" Susan replied with a question.
