Chapter 12 The Hunt
Chapter 12 The Hunt
The man who seized the car was of medium build, with a dull expression, a pale face, and empty, lifeless eyes.
He sat upright in the coachman's seat, his calloused hands gripping the reins tightly, and pulled the horse to gallop wildly, the carriage crashing and lurching through the deserted streets.
"Hey!"
Anastasia suddenly appeared in the driver's seat, as if she had fallen from the sky.
She smiled and asked, "Sir, where are you headed? Could you give me a ride?"
The driver didn't respond, his hands still gripping the reins tightly, as if he hadn't seen Anastasia at all, showing no reaction whatsoever.
"Sir, you'd better slow the carriage down," Anastasia continued. "Young Master Montague is delicate; it would be bad if he got hurt, and I wouldn't be able to explain myself."
The driver remained unresponsive; his condition resembled that of the young girl, and he showed no signs of life.
"Sir, playing dead is getting a bit boring," Anastasia continued. "Even though your heartbeat and breathing are slow, a living person is a living person, and you can't fool me."
The driver remained unresponsive, acting like a zombie no matter what Anastasia said.
"Fine, since you insist on this, I'll just have to poke a few holes in you to see who's lying between us."
As she spoke, Anastasia raised her slender sword.
Before the slender sword could be thrust out, the man, who had been completely unresponsive, suddenly moved. He flipped off the carriage, rolled on the ground, and hid once again.
Damn it! Damn it all! Didn't she go after Hall? Why is she back?!
The man of medium build thought to himself, his name was Danny Knight, a mysterious transcendent, and it was he who had manipulated the girl's corpse.
Knight knew that Mike Montague was a womanizer, which is why he stole the girl's body from the cemetery and used his supernatural powers to "revive" her, intending to seduce Mike with his beauty.
The honey trap was half successful; the deceased young girl successfully seduced the playboy Mike, gaining an opportunity to be alone with him.
The failure to achieve complete success was due to Anastasia's interference; the girl's body prevented Mike from being abducted.
Despite his failed attempt to seduce her, Danny Knight was not discouraged and devised a brand new plan.
While Larry Berbick and Wyatt Hall launched their attack, Knight remained hidden in the shadows like a dead man, waiting for his chance to strike.
Go ahead and fight, the more intensely you fight, the better.
This is Danny Knight's new plan: while the two sides are locked in a fierce battle and both are ignoring him, he will jump out, seize the carriage, and forcibly take away his target.
The new plan didn't go smoothly. Larry Berbick, who had initially been in the lead, was suddenly reduced to a pulp. Wyatt Hall, who had been trying to deprive others of their sight, failed to achieve his goal, and Knight, who was secretly watching, became extremely anxious.
Just as Danny Knight was about to give up, Anastasia, who had been guarding the carriage, suddenly left to go find Wyatt Hall. Danny Knight's chance had arrived!
Knight first used the girl's corpse to test Anastasia and confirm that she had left. Then Knight jumped onto the carriage. His plan had succeeded!
At this moment, Danny Knight was incredibly excited. His plan had succeeded, all the sacrifices had been worthwhile, and he would receive the reward he had always dreamed of!
However, plans can never keep up with changes.
Anastasia did leave, but instead of going to Wyatt Hall, she hid herself away like Knight.
You can't catch a wolf without risking your cub, and you can't catch a scoundrel without risking your wife. Anastasia pretended to abandon the defenseless Mike and successfully caught Danny Knight, this shady worm.
The carriage, which had been speeding through the street, came to a stop. Anastasia leaned out of the carriage and looked at Mike inside. She asked, "My dear Mike, it's so good to see you're still alive."
Mike, who was dazed and confused, struggled to his feet. Tonight had been incredibly tough for the young Mr. Montague.
The girl's resurrected body shattered his preconceived notions, and the runaway carriage inflicted physical harm upon him. All the suffering he endured tonight was directly caused by Danny Knight.
"Stay in the carriage and don't move. Hold your short sword firmly and don't cut yourself," Anastasia said in a coaxing tone, like she was talking to a child. "I'll go avenge you right now."
With that, Anastasia jumped off the carriage again and headed straight for Danny Knight, who was hiding.
Danny Knight had hidden himself so well, and since he looked like a dead man, Anastasia hadn't noticed him at first.
Now that Danny Knight has shown up, Anastasia has memorized his scent. No matter how well he hides, Anastasia will dig him out no matter how hard she tries.
"Sir, don't hide anymore. Hiding won't solve anything," Anastasia said as she strolled forward.
Hearing the approaching footsteps, Danny Knight grew increasingly anxious. He knew he was no match for them and dared not fight. He also dared not move his position easily, fearing he would be caught.
Danny Knight, too afraid to move, could only pray silently to the merciful God that he would not be discovered. He vowed that if he could survive the night, he would never steal corpses from the churchyard again.
Experience has shown that it's better to rely on yourself than on others.
Even if a merciful God truly exists, how could He protect a despicable corpse thief?
"I've found you."
Anastasia stopped in her tracks, her slender sword pointing diagonally at the dirt by the roadside.
There was a flowerbed on the street, and Danny Knight was hiding in the soil of the flowerbed, like a real dead man.
Danny Knight spent years surrounded by the dead, and his body reeked of their presence. In addition, his years of digging up graves gave him an earthy smell.
The smell of death and earth was Knight's best cover; he had previously used it to fool Anastasia.
However, it's best not to use the same method on the same person a second time.
Anastasia plunged her sword into the soil of the flower bed. A scream rang out instantly as blood seeped out from the gap between the blade and the soil, turning the soil a dark red.
Anastasia released her grip, and the slender, jet-black sword pinned Danny Knight to the mud he was hiding in, like a coffin nail.
Then, Anastasia produced another slender, black sword. Its sharp tip pierced through the soil once more, embedding itself in the body hidden beneath it, leaving another patch of soil stained dark red with blood.
Soon, Anastasia thrust out two more swords, and four identical slender swords pierced Danny Knight's limbs, pinning him firmly to the ground. He could only lie in the mud in despair, like the corpses he had dug up.
Only when the blood has dried will the despicable corpse thief die in despair.
After doing all this, Anastasia leaped across the street, her body rising and falling several times before she soared over numerous buildings.
She had walked this road from the riverside apartment to the Fusheng Bar countless times over the past three days, and she remembered every side street and every tall building in the vicinity clearly.
Even if she couldn't see anything, Anastasia wouldn't bump into any buildings, including streetlights; she had already planned her pursuit route in her mind.
With superb swordsmanship and precise pursuit, her mutated power was born for slaughter, and she even gave it a nice name: Grace.
"Sir, I've got you!" Anastasia's voice echoed among the towering buildings.
The voice of a young woman should have been pleasant to hear, but to Wyatt Hall it was nothing short of a death knell; with each toll, death drew closer.
Wyatt Hall is not good at fighting; his mutant powers are better suited for crowd control and support.
That's why there's the killer duo of Wyatt Hall and Larry Berbick, one charging ahead and the other supporting from the side.
Now, Berbick, who was in charge of the charge, is dead beyond any doubt, and Hall, who was assisting from the side, is now a fish on the chopping block, at Anastasia's mercy.
Wyatt Hall was at a loss: should he run away or continue to hide?
He had already left the high-rise building where he had been hiding. He had fired so many shots from that building that it was no longer safe.
At this moment, Hall's thoughts were similar to Knight's, who was stuck in the mud. As long as he didn't move his position or make any noise, he might be able to escape Anastasia's pursuit.
The hunt has begun. Where can Wyatt Hall run to? How long can he hide?
From the moment they accepted the mission, Hall and Berbick's lives were on a countdown.
The hunter Anastasia roams among the buildings. Although she is blind, as long as her vision has not been restored, it means that the person who took her sight has not escaped.
Wyatt Hall, who was in hiding, also realized this.
If he continues to maintain the power of mutation and continues to deprive Anastasia of her sight, Anastasia may continue searching until he is found or until the power of mutation can no longer be maintained.
However, if the power of mutation is no longer maintained, Anastasia, whose vision has been restored, will probably find his hiding place more easily.
Wyatt Hall was caught in a dilemma, unable to make a decision for a moment. It was a matter of life and death, and he could not afford to be careless.
Time passed second by second, and waiting and hiding were always long and agonizing.
Hall grew increasingly panicked as he hid. Although he no longer heard the death knell ringing in his ears, he was certain that Anastasia had not given up her pursuit of him.
Both of them were well aware that Wyatt Hall's mutant power had been affecting Anastasia, forcibly robbing her of her sight.
One has not given up the hunt, and the other has failed to find an opportunity to escape; the hunt will continue.
Wyatt Hall was once again faced with a difficult choice.
Should they cease maintaining the power of mutation and create the illusion that they have already escaped? Or should they maintain the power of mutation and continue to wear each other down?
This time, Wyatt Hall had to make a choice. He chose to stop maintaining the mutant power, remove Anastasia's visual deprivation, and create the illusion that he had escaped.
"So you really were here!"
The death knell tolled once again, just the moment Wyatt Hall's visual deprivation was lifted!
Startled, Wyatt Hall looked up sharply in the direction of the sound and saw Anastasia standing at the street corner, her sweet oval face beaming with smiles.
"Sir, people need to breathe, but garbage doesn't." Anastasia walked forward slowly, like a cat toying with a mouse.
This is a narrow street sandwiched between two buildings, rarely frequented by anyone. A large pile of garbage was piled up in the middle of the street, and Wyatt Hall was hiding under it.
"Sir, I told you, don't let me catch you, or I'll kill you."
As soon as she finished speaking, Anastasia slashed her sword at the pile of foul-smelling garbage, aiming at Wyatt Hall, who was hiding underneath it.
