Chapter 28: Honest Thief
Chapter 28: Honest Thief
Mr. Singers clenched his fists in anger as his mood darkened. He suspected the involvement of his former boss and the cartels, who seemed determined to make life difficult for his wife and child in order to force him out of hiding.
"We were asked to pay the mortgage, but we couldn't, so we were kicked out of the house," Andrea said, wiping away tears as she spoke with a face full of sorrow. "Even after we were forced out, those my dad owed came knocking at our rented house. My mom had to take on four jobs, working tirelessly, but all the money was always taken away. She couldn't take it anymore and fell ill. I was young then, unable to pay the hospital bills. Mom was even kicked out of the hospital before passing away at home..."
Andrea's voice choked with emotion as she sobbed, and Mr. Singers fought the urge to step forward and embrace her.
He was afraid he might tell Andrea he was the reason his mother suffered and died hopelessly, as well as for subjecting her to a miserable childhood.
"Please tell me the name of the hospital," Mr. Singers asked, his clenched fists emitting a faint crackling sound.
Andrea's expression transformed dramatically, a mix of resentment and fury overtaking her features. She vividly recalled the countless occasions she had beseeched the hospital to provide care for her mother, only to be ignored. On the day her mother passed away, she had dashed through a heavy downpour to plead with the doctors, yet her pleas fell on deaf ears. Even in death, she vowed never to forget the hospital's name.
"Kai Clinic," Andrea responded.
Mr. Singers nodded solemnly before drawing her into a comforting embrace. "I vow to seek justice for those who caused your mother's suffering," he declared.
Andrea nodded in acknowledgment, finding solace in his protective embrace.
When Andrea grew drowsy, Mr. Singers escorted her to her room before stepping out with his phone in hand.
After a quick call, Tate promptly arrived and joined him in the study.
"Acquire this hospital and ensure you capture all the doctors who were in charge during these specific years," Mr. Singers instructed Tate as he handed over a paper detailing the dates of Rebecca's passing and the subsequent events.
"I will take care of it immediately, Mr. Singers," Tate replied, taking the paper.
"Mobilize our special forces; this is a top-priority mission that needs to be addressed without delay," Mr. Singers said firmly.
Tate stood at attention, understanding the gravity of the situation. He nodded before leaving Mr. Singers alone in the study.
Alone in his study, Mr. Singer retrieved the photo from his breast pocket and tenderly ran his thumb over it. "Rebecca, I will seek justice for you. Those who caused you harm will face the consequences of their actions," he vowed quietly.
His eyes welled up with tears, a fierce determination sparking within him as he recalled the memory of his late wife gifting him the cherished photo. A bittersweet smile graced his face as he remembered her playful words from the past.
During a moment of dressing him for work, Rebecca had teasingly admonished, "Darling, I can't bear to lose you to those corporate ladies. The ring on your finger may not deter them, but with this photo, they'll see the beauty that is mine and back off."
Since that day, Mr. Singer carried the photo everywhere, a reminder of his beloved wife's protective love.
As his phone rang, a call from Tate came through. "Boss, the doctors and the management head have been apprehended," Tate informed him.
"Send me the address," Mr. Singers requested before abruptly ending the call and leaving his study room.
As he prepared to depart from the mansion, he summoned Housekeeper Win and instructed, "Inform Andrea that I have gone to meet a special guest who has just arrived in Sunshine City. Let her know not to worry if she wakes up and doesn't find me."
After conveying his message, Mr. Singers entered one of his cars and the convoy set off. An hour later, they reached an abandoned site on the riverbank in Sunshine City.
"Tate, where are the three doctors and the former hospital management head been secured?" Mr. Singers inquired once they arrived.
Tate stepped forward and confirmed, "Mr. Singers. They are all tied up inside."
Mr. Singers nodded, then proceeded into the abandoned site where the hostages were being held captive.
As he looked at their faces, he couldn't help but notice how much they had aged over the passing years.
"Give them the pictures," Mr. Singers instructed Tate, who promptly relayed the order to the armed men in the room.
Each of the bound men was handed a pair of photographs.
"Do you recall the mother and child?" Mr. Singers inquired slowly, devoid of menace in his tone.
The tied-up men gazed at the images intently, but after many years had passed, they couldn't recollect and shook their heads one by one.
"In that case, they are not our targets. Dispose of them and dump their bodies in the river," Mr. Singers stated coldly.
As the men trembled in fear at the sight of Mr. Singers turning to leave, surrounded by gunmen readying their weapons to shoot, their minds raced. Suddenly, one of them exclaimed loudly, "I remember! This child, she was quite headstrong, always causing trouble at the hospital and even once stole my stethoscope."
Andrea left a lasting impact on him when she stole his stethoscope, returned to the hospital, and informed him that he could only retrieve it by accompanying her home to treat her mother.
This encounter with an honest thief was a memorable one for him.
Mr. Singer's expression turned grim upon hearing the doctor's words, his heart brimming with rage.
