Chapter 26: Least Expected
Chapter 26: Least Expected
Sylvester's expression morphed into one of astonishment as he processed Mr. Singers' unexpected knowledge of his wife and children. For years, Sylvester had cultivated the facade of a solitary businessman, concealing his family life from prying eyes.
Perplexed by Mr. Singers' decision not to exploit his family as leverage after their prolonged rivalry, Sylvester hesitated before attempting to speak. "Mr. Singers, I..." he began, only to be abruptly cut off by Mr. Singers.
"Sylvester, I have no interest in your words. Just remember, she is my redline. Anyone who dares to harm her will face the consequences, and not even their loved ones will be spared," Mr. Singers declared firmly, shutting down any further conversation.
With that final statement, Mr. Singers departed with his entourage, leaving Sylvester behind with a brooding countenance. Despite perceiving a potential opportunity to outmanoeuvre Mr. Singers, Sylvester found himself sinking deeper into a streak of defeats, leading to frustration and a sense of helplessness.
His jaw clenched tightly, Sylvester glowered at Mr. Singers, his expression a mix of defiance and reluctance.
Mr. Singers made his way directly to the governor without glancing back at Sylvester. By the time he arrived, the governor's business forum had already concluded.
"Mr. Singers, your absence disrupted my speech," the governor announced as Mr. Singers entered the lounge where he was seated.
"Governor Mike, I apologize for my delay. I was attending to my pregnant wife," Mr. Singers explained as they shook hands and took their seats.
"I am entrusting you with 50% of the shares in the West Ring development. I did not feel confident handing the project over to anyone else," Governor Mike declared.
Mr Singers looked at me with surprise, he didn't lobby for the project, Governor Mike gazed at Mr. Singers with a knowing smile, as if he could read his thoughts, he said "Mr. Singers, you truly stand out among the businessmen of Sunshine City. Your unwavering commitment to your consumers and your steadfast adherence to fair market prices, from small traders to large stores, sets you apart."
Reflecting on the past challenges when inflation gripped the economy and other regions were in turmoil with protests, Governor Mike appreciated Mr. Singers' refusal to raise prices had shielded the citizens of Sunshine City from the worst of the crisis.
Governor Mike seized the moment to express his gratitude for Mr. Singers' invaluable support during those trying times.
Mr. Singers reassured Governor Mike, "Governor, I promise to initiate the project and ensure it remains affordable for low-income individuals. I will facilitate access to loans so that anyone can purchase a home, effectively addressing the issue of homelessness on our streets."
Governor Mike, upon hearing Mr. Singers' words, breathed a sigh of relief. His initiative to develop the district aimed to tackle the rising number of homeless individuals in the city, where housing in prime areas had become unattainable for many.
"Governor Mike, I would like to introduce my wife to you. I hope you can extend your support to her as well, just as you have done for me," Mr. Singers took the opportunity to seek backing for Andrea.
Governor Mike's expression revealed surprise. Although he maintained a distance from the elite circles of Sunshine City, he was not oblivious to the rumours and news circulating among them.
He didn't expect Mr Singers to love the woman who was described as fat and ugly to such an extent.
"I'll always have her back, Mr. Singers," Governor Mike promptly assured, eager to forge a friendship with him.
Unbeknownst to Andrea, who was heading to the kitchen, Mr. Singers was actively championing her cause.
"Ma'am Andrea, is there anything you need? Are you hungry? What can I prepare for you?" Housekeeper Win and the other servants anxiously approached Andrea, bombarding her with questions.
With a warm smile, Andrea responded, "I want to cook my husband's favourite dish. Does anyone know what that is?"
When Andrea announced her intention to cook, Housekeeper Win and the other servants visibly paled, beads of sweat forming on their foreheads despite the cool air in the room. Housekeeper Win, looking even more ashen-faced, proposed, "How about you relax in the living room and watch some movies? I'll speak to the cook and have him prepare Mr. Singer's favourite dish."
Andrea shook her head firmly. "I want to do it myself," she insisted.
Without another word, she strode into the kitchen, leaving Housekeeper Win and the other servants exchanging worried glances filled with fear.
"Housekeeper Win, what should we do? If Mr. Singer returns and finds out we let Ma'am cook, we'll all be in serious trouble," one of the servants whispered anxiously.
"I'm too young to die," another servant lamented quietly.
"We must go and help her in the kitchen. We can't prevent her from cooking, but we must ensure she doesn't do it alone," Housekeeper Win declared, mustering her courage and taking charge of the situation.
Her ability to handle crises effectively was a key factor in her appointment as the mansion's housekeeper. All the servants, including Housekeeper Win, gathered in the kitchen to prepare the meal together.
As they were busy in the kitchen, Mr. Singers arrived home. Stepping out of his car, he made his way towards the house's entrance.
Upon seeing the anxious servants eagerly welcoming him and sensing the tense atmosphere, Mr. Singers' expression darkened. He entered the living room and cast a sharp gaze around the room.
His eyes landed on Housekeeper Win and the rest of the servants standing nearby, visibly trembling with fear.
"What's going on?" Mr. Singers inquired sternly after taking off his coat.
"Mr. Singers, we apologize for not being able to dissuade Madam. She was adamant about cooking for you, so we assisted her in the kitchen, ensuring she didn't exert herself or strain the unborn child," Housekeeper Win hastily explained, her voice strained.
"Where is the meal she prepared?" Mr. Singers inquired, causing Housekeeper Win's eyes to widen in shock at the unexpected question.
