Chapter 54
Chapter 54
Katrina’s POV
I stood there for a long time, staring at the door, willing him to come back. But I knew he wouldn’t. Not yet. With a heavy sigh, I wandered deeper into the apartment, letting myself relax for the first time in what felt like forever. I ran my fingers along the edge of his desk, flipped through some books, and even found one of his jackets draped over a chair.
Without thinking, I pulled it around my shoulders, inhaling his scent.
I could get used to this. A sudden knock at the door made me freeze. My heart slammed against my ribs.
No one was supposed to know this place, the Pack Doctor made sure of it. I took a slow, shaky breath, trying to calm my racing thoughts. Maybe it was Adolphus. Maybe he forgot something.
Or maybe… it wasn’t.
Swallowing my nerves, I cautiously approached the door. My fingers hovered over the handle for a moment before I finally pulled it open.
The breath left my lungs.
Standing there, dressed in an elegant silk gown, her golden hair cascading over her shoulders, was Cassandra.
She smiled. A huge, dazzling smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.
“Surprised to see me?” she asked, tilting her head.
My entire body tensed. Every instinct screamed at me to slam the door in her face, but I forced myself to stay still.
“What are you doing here?” I asked, my voice carefully neutral.
Her smile widened. “I came to talk.”
I crossed my arms. “About what?”
She sighed dramatically. “Look, Katrina, I know we haven’t exactly been… friends.”
I almost laughed. “That’s putting it mildly.”
Her expression didn’t falter. “But I don’t want things to be this way anymore. I want to fix things between us.”
I stared at her, waiting for the catch.
She tilted her head, feigning innocence. “You don’t trust me, do you?”
I let out a dry laugh. “Not even a little.”
She chuckled, shaking her head. “Fair enough. But I am serious, Katrina. There are things you don’t know, things I can tell you. But not here.”
A warning bell rang in my head. “Why not here?”
“Because,” she said smoothly, stepping closer, “there are wolves following Adolphus, and they’re not from our pack.”
My stomach twisted. “What do you mean?”
Cassandra smiled and took another step forward, lowering her gaze. “Come with me,” she said softly.
I hesitated. Every fiber of my being screamed no. But what if she really did have information? What if she could tell me something that I desperately needed to know?
I glanced over my shoulder at the apartment. If Adolphus were here, he’d tell me not to go. But he wasn’t here. I took a deep breath and stepped forward.
The moment I crossed the threshold, two warriors appeared from the shadows, their grips like iron as they seized my arms.
Panic shot through me. I thrashed against them, trying to break free, but they were too strong.
“Let go of me!” I shouted, struggling against their hold.
Cassandra simply smirked, her arms folding across her chest as she watched me with amusement.
“You really are too trusting,” she mused. “It’s almost pathetic.”
My blood boiled. “You—”
She leaned in slightly, her voice a whisper of venom.
“Sleep tightly in the dungeon tonight, Katrina.”
