The Alpha Mate

Chapter 5

Chapter 5

I forced myself to look up, meeting his razor-sharp gaze even as every instinct screamed at me to submit. My heart hammered, but I couldn't show weakness.

Not when my survival hung by a thread.

"I swear, I'm just a rogue," I said, fighting to keep my voice steady. "I've been alone... for a while now. I'm only here because I have nowhere else to go."

The words tasted like ash—half-truths wrapped in desperation.

I wasn't just a rogue. I was the unwanted son of an Alpha. The discarded twin who'd fled rather than watch his family destroy what little remained of him. But he couldn't know that.

Draven's dark eyes bore into me, stripping away every carefully constructed layer.

"Your name," he demanded, voice cold as winter frost. "Now."

My throat worked. "Atlas."

The name felt foreign in this place where I had no identity worth claiming. I lifted my chin, refusing to cower even as his wolf's presence pressed against my consciousness.

He took a slow step toward me.

"Atlas… It sounds so familiar," he murmured. "And I'm supposed to believe you've come to Crimson Fang, of all places, without any ulterior motives?"

Fear clawed up my spine, but I shoved it down. Hyde stirred restlessly inside me, torn between the urge to flee and the strange pull toward this dangerous Alpha.

I couldn't let either instinct win.

"I wouldn't be here if I had any other choice," I said, forcing conviction into my voice. "I'm no threat to you or your pack."

The silence that followed felt suffocating, thick with unspoken threats.

Alpha Draven continued to stare at me down, expression carved from stone. The patrol wolves flanked me, eyes burning holes in my back, ready to tear me apart at a single word from their Alpha.

Every second stretched into an eternity. My muscles coiled tight, ready to bolt even though I knew I wouldn't make it three steps before they caught me.

Finally, Draven gave a slow nod, but his expression remained cold, calculating.

"Fine. I'll allow you to stay," he said, his voice like a low rumble of distant thunder. "But let me be clear—if I even suspect you're lying, there won't be anywhere left for you to run."

Relief crashed through me so suddenly my knees nearly buckled, but I locked them in place. I couldn't show weakness.

Not relief, not fear, nothing that would make him reconsider.

He lifted his chin, motioning to one of his pack members. "Watch him closely."

A wolf with cold gray eyes stepped forward, sizing me up with a predatory gaze. My brief moment of relief evaporated as I felt the weight of scrutiny from every direction—sharp eyes, suspicious glances, wolves waiting for me to slip up.

I'd escaped one prison only to walk into another.

But at least here, I could breathe.

Draven turned back to me, his intense gaze unyielding. He moved closer, invading my space. His voice dropped low, dangerously smooth. "But if you want to stay here, you'll need to prove your loyalty."

My throat tightened. "How... can I do that?"

Intrigue flashed in his dark eyes. He leaned forward, close enough that I could feel the heat radiating from his skin, smell the rich, wild scent that marked him as Alpha—pine and earth and something darker. My breath caught.

His hand reached up, fingers brushing a strand of hair behind my ear. The touch lingered, deliberate. My skin burned where he touched me, and I hated how my body responded—pulse quickening, heat pooling low.

"You're shaking," he murmured, tone deceptively soft.

"I'm not afraid of you," I lied, voice thick with defiance.

I couldn't back down. Showing fear would be the end of me.

"No?" His hand dropped to my jaw, thumb brushing over my cheek in a way that sent shivers down my spine. "But maybe you should be."

I held my breath as his fingers trailed down my neck, stopping just above my collarbone. He was close enough that if I leaned forward, our lips would brush.

Every instinct screamed at me to pull away. But I was rooted in place, caught between fear and something I didn't want to name. My skin tingled, desire warring against judgment. This was dangerous.

And yet I couldn't move.

His gaze dropped to my mouth, eyes darkening with something raw. The air between us felt charged, electric.

Draven's lips quirked into a faint, wicked smile. He let the silence hang, his gaze trailing slowly over me, unnervingly thorough.

"Let's see if you're as harmless as you claim to be." His eyes locked on mine, unflinching. "Tell me, have you ever been with a man? Are you pure?"

The question struck me like a physical blow. Heat flooded my face, shame and fury warring in my chest. I took a step back, legs trembling, but there was nowhere to go. The patrol wolves still surrounded us.

My face flushed with humiliation, but beneath it burned something fiercer—rage at being examined like livestock.

But I was trapped. I'd walked into Crimson Fang territory knowing the risks. Running now would be suicide.
