Chapter 554: I’m Trusting You With Dave
Bianca's words put the old man in relief. This was the kind of strength he had always hoped to see carried on in the Evans family. In times like these, when everything felt like it could fall apart, how many people would actually stay?
“Such loyalty...” A quiet smile of relief appeared on his face. He looked at Bianca and said with a serious tone, “Bianca, I’m trusting you with Dave.”
She gave a firm nod and spoke softly, “You don’t have to worry.”
Power and success mattered, but in the end, it was family who stayed.
As his eyes drifted off, Lucas found himself thinking about the road Dave had chosen. It was different from his choices, but he hoped to see where it would lead.
After Bianca left, Dave looked straight at Brady. “Grandpa needs rest. He’s not leaving the hospital anytime soon. Make sure Aunt’s body is handled properly, and put off the funeral for now.”
Brady’s expression tensed. “Can I see Lucas?”
Dave’s voice turned cold. “Did you forget what I said? You’re not allowed to see Grandpa. That’s what the doctor ordered.”
“I know, I know, don’t upset him. But can you at least tell him I’m outside?” Brady pushed, clearly trying to stir something.
Dave didn’t respond right away. Then he said, “If you’ve got other things to do, you can go.”
Brady raised an eyebrow. “I’m not busy. Lawson Group isn’t as demanding as Evans Group. I don’t need to rush back. Besides, I heard Phoenix Alliance Group’s stock dropped again this morning. Shouldn’t you be checking on that? I’m just here to make sure Lucas’s okay.”
He could feel Dave’s sharp stare on him. With a casual shrug, he added, “I mean, even if I don’t see him, I can stick around. If anything happens, I’ll be here. The hospital seems well-equipped anyway. Nothing to worry about, right?”
What a sly move. Brady was clearly trying to push him into leaving. But if Dave refused, that might be exactly what Brady wanted.
If Dave walked out now, Brady would likely jump at the chance to upset Lucas or worse, push him to his death.
But if Dave stayed, the situation at Phoenix Alliance Group would only get worse. Without acting fast or finding help, the company’s stock could crash completely.
If the decline continued, Phoenix Alliance Group’s market value would be cut in half before long.
Brady had made his move. Now, he waited to see what Dave would do.
It was a tough situation, Phoenix Alliance Group on the brink, and Evans Group standing strong and untouchable.
But Dave’s face gave nothing away. He looked composed like none of it mattered.
Brady remembered Skylar mentioning some gambling deal Dave had made. Yet, here he was, still calm, still unreadable.
Brady couldn’t tell if Dave had a backup plan or if he just didn’t realize how serious things really were.
“Grandpa comes first. And right now, there’s nothing I can do for Phoenix Alliance Group,” Dave said, turning to Brady. “Got any bright ideas? Can Lawson Group help get us through this?”
Brady narrowed his eyes, studying Dave carefully. Why was this kid flipping the script and tossing the pressure back on him?
He let out a small cough to ease the tension before answering nervously.
“Dave, what do you expect me to say? You know Lawson Group isn’t in the same league as Evans Group. I just lost my wife. My mind is occupied with what happened to my wife, and most of my funds are tied up in big projects. I’m in no position to help.”
Then, as if a thought had suddenly struck him, Brady’s tone shifted. He looked Dave straight in the eye.
“Since Lucas’s awake now, why don’t you ask him to have Evans Group step in? They’ve got the power to throw in billions without even flinching.”
Dave stared at Brady, his eyes cold and unreadable. He didn’t say a word, but the silence said enough.
Brady kept going, undeterred. “I get it, you’re worried about Lucas’s recovery. But right now, do you have a better choice? You’re the eldest grandson of the Evans family. This could be your lifeline. Who else out there can help? Who else even wants to?”
He began pacing the hallway, the sound of his footsteps filling the quiet space like a ticking clock. On the surface, he looked concerned. But behind that calm face, his mind was running through every move.
To someone who didn’t know better, Brady’s suggestion might’ve seemed thoughtful, even smart. And with no other options in sight, his logic was hard to argue with.
In the cutthroat world of business, survival often came down to one thing, money. And right now, Phoenix Alliance Group needed a massive cash injection just to stay alive.
But who would willingly pour that much money into a crashing stock? On the surface, the situation looked impossible. Unless Dave had a strong blood tie to the Evans Group, getting involved seemed out of reach.
But Dave wasn’t just anyone. His own international businesses had given him real power. He didn’t need the Evans Group’s backing. In fact, his ability to cut ties with them came from that very strength.
Still, for now, he had to play the game and let Brady think he’d taken the bait.
“Phoenix Alliance Group cut ties with Evans Group not long ago,” Dave said seriously.
"Dave, I don’t mean any disrespect," Brady said, adjusting his tone. "But let me give you some advice; flexibility matters in business. Didn’t you say Lucas gave you the authority to make decisions for Evans Group while he’s in the hospital? Or did I misunderstand him?"
Brady’s questions were meant to corner Dave; either force him to admit he had no real power or give Brady a reason to push for a meeting with Lucas.
If Dave admitted he had the authority, Brady could use that to interfere in Phoenix Alliance Group’s issues, and even drag Evans Group into the mess, shaking the family’s foundation.
“Of course, I can make decisions. Grandpa put me in charge of Evans Group,” Dave said as he stared directly into Brady's eyes. “But we’re talking about a huge amount of money for both Phoenix Alliance Group and Evans Group.”
“You foolish kid,” Brady said, trying to push him. “Focus on saving Phoenix Alliance Group first. Raise the money now, fix the details later before Lucas finds out.”
Dave sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose, pretending to hesitate. “I’ll think about it.”
