Chapter 523: What A Greedy Woman
Chapter 523: What A Greedy Woman
Even after everything Skylar’s mistakes, the lies, and the shame she brought; Lucas never wanted to hurt her.
He gave her a wedding dress that was worth a fortune. It was his way of giving her a future and keeping his promise to an old friend.
If it had been anyone else, Lucas would’ve had them killed. He wasn’t the type to forgive easily.
Lucas's chest tightened as he gripped the arms of his chair. In his mind, he saw the face of his old friend from the war, staring back at him with disappointment.
He hadn’t failed in watching over Skylar. He failed by letting her fall just when she was starting to shine.
“How... how did it come to this?” he whispered, shaken, unable to believe it was real.
Then his voice rose in fury. “What the hell happened?!” he shouted, demanding answers.
Rupert observed calmly and secretly hiding how carefully he was playing his game. He wanted to spark Lucas’s rage and make him doubt Dave.
With careful words, he twisted the story full of pain and betrayal, describing Skylar’s body left in the cold of a ranch’s storage room.
“I’m only repeating what I’ve heard,” he said, pretending to be innocent. “I don’t know what Dave said to Skylar. But I do know he and Bianca visited her in the hospital before she died.”
Most of what he said was true, but he twisted it just enough to leave Lucas full of doubt.
As Lucas’s anger rose, Rupert knew his moment had come.
He needed to turn Lucas’s anger into something bigger.
“Dave went too far. Skylar saved his life, and this is how he repaid her? Maybe someone’s twisted influence made him see her as a problem... someone who needed to be removed.”
The hint was enough. Lucas’s rage simmered and his eyes shut tight as the storm inside him became deeper.
Rupert could tell that Lucas had understood the silent blame aimed at Bianca.
After a long pause, Lucas let out a heavy breath. “Skylar made mistakes, but she didn’t deserve to die.”
“I’ve also come across something serious…” Rupert said, ready to land the final hit.
Lucas’s eyes flared. “Say it!”
“Dad, please don’t let your anger take over,” Rupert replied, pretending to care while hiding his real aim. “Prosper Pawnshop has a red diamond now. It looks a lot like the one Dave bought at that auction.”
Lucas narrowed his eyes. “The one worth a billion?”
“I can’t say for sure. But if you look into it, you might find out,” Rupert said, barely hiding the smirk in his voice.
Lucas slammed his hand on the table and he made up his mind.
He told Franklin to call the owner of Prosper Pawnshop.
The man on the line spoke politely. He was afraid that upsetting Lucas might ruin his business in the city.
“Mr. Evans, how can I help you? Are you looking to buy something? Or just asking about an item? I’ve got some rare and newly acquired pieces.”
“That’s not it. I want to know where you got the red diamond,” Lucas said. He was doing his best to stay calm. The owner had no idea that Dave was the one who bought it.
“You’re well-informed. That red diamond is truly special. In this business, we usually don’t talk about where an item came from or how much it cost. But since it’s you, I’ll tell you. Miss Scott pawned it here. As for the price, I’m afraid…”
Lucas ended the call right away. His face turned red with rage.
There was no point in talking further. Miss Scott had to be Bianca. She was the only one who could have gotten that red diamond.
He used to think he was wrong about her. But now, he realized he had been right the whole time. Bianca was smart, but she only cared about money. She approached Dave just to take advantage of him.
Lucas thought back to a talk they once had. Bianca told him she didn’t care about the red diamond necklace. Now he knew she had lied.
After breaking up with Dave, she pretended she wanted to give the necklace back. But now?
Clearly, Bianca never gave the red diamond back to Dave. She pawned it instead.
Maybe Dave didn’t even know.
After being betrayed by Skylar in the past, Lucas had grown to hate lies even more. Now Bianca had lied to his grandson. That thought made Lucas’s anger boil over.
“What a greedy woman!” Rupert said through gritted teeth. “She fooled us for money, but I can let that slide. However, lying to Dave and pushing Skylar to her death? That’s beyond wrong. It’s unforgivable!”
Rupert never passed up a chance to speak badly of Bianca. He added quickly, “Dad, with Skylar gone, there’s nothing stopping Bianca from marrying Dave. She’s sly and heartless. If she joins our family, we’re doomed. You can’t let that happen.”
Rupert’s words hit Lucas hard. He already had strong resentment toward Bianca. Now, the proof against her was too clear to ignore. If Rupert hadn’t spoken up, Lucas might’ve stayed in the dark.
If Dave married her, it would be too late to stop anything.
The recent wedding had already brought shame to their family.
If Lucas let this go on, just like Rupert said, the Evans family might fall apart.
“I won’t let that woman get what she wants. If Dave still chooses to marry her, then he has no right to inherit the Evans name or return to this house!”
Lucas was so angry that his chest started to hurt. Sweat ran down his face. He felt dizzy and dropped onto the sofa.
Rupert panicked and shouted, “Someone call an ambulance!” He wanted to hurt the bond between Lucas and Dave, but not at the cost of Lucas’s health. This wasn’t the right time.
Lucas held Rupert’s hand tightly and spoke with what little strength he had left. “Find out who took Skylar. We can’t let them go unpunished. Whoever did this must pay.”
Rupert answered right away. “I already know. It was one of Dave’s men. His name is Wyatt. Are you sure you want to go after him? He’s close to Dave.”
“Do it!” Lucas barked. Right now, the only way he could release his anger was by blaming Wyatt. “His life doesn’t matter. Even if Dave finds out I gave the order, what can he do about it?”
Rupert asked, “What about Bianca?”
