Chapter 301: Don’t Push Me Too Much
Chapter 301: Don’t Push Me Too Much
As a kid and even as he grew up, any woman who got close to Dave or was seen with him would vanish mysteriously. At first, Dave thought it was just bad luck, but one day, he accidentally overheard his grandfather telling his men to get rid of a girl he had only talked to briefly in class.
The young Dave was terrified. He covered his mouth to stop himself from screaming.
Hearing those cold orders from the man he had always seen as kind shook him deeply. He was scared and confused, wondering if the same could happen to him if he didn’t do as his grandfather wanted.
From that moment, he avoided getting close to any women. It wasn’t because he was heartless; he was just trying to keep them safe.
Deep down, Dave was a kind person, but that didn’t matter to his grandfather. So, to protect himself, he put on a mask of indifference and cruelty, hiding his true self.
That changed when Bianca came into his life. He was drawn to her without even realizing it—getting closer, chasing after her, and eventually falling deeply in love. He thought about marrying her, but he knew that would surely anger his grandfather. Ever since his father’s death, his grandpa had been wary of ordinary girls trying to climb their way up into high society.
Even though Dave had built his own empire in Edenfield, the real power of the Evans Group still lay with his grandfather, Lucas. Lucas was tough, powerful, and even more capable than Dave. If Lucas decided to go after Bianca, Dave wasn’t sure he could keep her safe.
“No,” Dave said firmly after a moment of silence.
The best way to protect Bianca was to keep her hidden from his family.
Hearing this, Lucas smiled and said, “Since you don’t have a girlfriend, you’ll marry Skylar. You’re both young, and there’s plenty of time to make the relationship work. Just trust me, I won’t bring you disaster.”
Dave stayed silent.
“You will get engaged to Skylar. I’m not here to negotiate; I’m here to inform you,” Lucas said, his voice dripping with threat like poison.
“Grandpa, don’t push me too much,” Dave replied, lifting his head to meet Lucas’s eyes. He looked like a cornered wolf, defiant, with tension thick in the air.
“Then I’ll make Justin leave the Phoenix Alliance Group,” Lucas sneered. “And that’s not all. I’ll freeze all his assets and publicly accuse him of embezzling funds. No one in business will hire him again. I’ll make sure he suffers both physically and mentally, living a life of shame and humiliation.”
Dave’s fists tightened. He knew Lucas meant every word. His grandfather never backed down from a threat.
“I’ll give you five seconds to think it over,” Lucas said coldly, starting the countdown. “Five.”
In those few moments, Dave’s mind flooded with memories of Bianca. She was the first person to make him feel real warmth, experience love, and be loved in return. He had felt genuine care with her, which he’d never had before.
Lucas had been generous, but only in a material way. He had never held back when it came to providing Dave with an education, sending him to the best schools, or giving him all the money he could need. Every year, millions were spent on making sure Dave had the right financial training and knew how to move in social circles.
But when it came to his emotions, Lucas was distant. Most of the time, he was too busy—buried in paperwork, managing family issues, checking Dave’s grades, or attending endless meetings.
Dave didn’t have anyone to share his day with. The only person who tended to him was the maid, who would quietly bring him Band-Aids when he got hurt. When he failed an exam, instead of comfort, all he got from his grandfather was harsh criticism, even though he was already beating himself up inside.
But Bianca cared in a way no one else did. She was interested in his day-to-day life—how much work he had, what time he came home, what he ate, and if he took care of himself. If he came home late, she would get up just to warm up dinner for him.
Bianca had melted the ice around his heart like sunlight breaking through the darkness. She loved him for who he was, not for his family name or wealth.
“Four.”
At the same time, Dave thought of Justin. Justin could be mischievous at times, but he had never let him down. For years, Justin had been loyal, handling the fallout of Dave’s decisions without complaint. With him around, Dave felt secure.
Justin was one of the few real friends Dave had. They could relax and unwind together, a rare sense of normalcy in his chaotic world.
Now, Justin had become the target of Lucas’s wrath simply for trying to help him. Dave could never let his friend suffer because of him—that’s not what a real friend would do.
“Three.”
His brother and the woman he loved… he couldn’t abandon either of them.
“Two.”
And then there was Skylar. He held her in high regard, perhaps because she had once saved his life. That memory left him with a sense of gratitude, and he couldn’t forget that.
Skylar had once confided in him that she wasn’t fond of arranged marriages, but it was clear that one day, she would be expected to marry him.
And now, the countdown was almost over.
“One.”
At last, Lucas heard the words he had been waiting for.
“I agree to the engagement with Skylar,” Dave said heavily.
“On one condition,” Dave said firmly, and he wore cold eyes as he stared back at his grandpa.
“Name it,” Lucas replied, eyes narrowing towards his grandson.
“I want fifty percent of the Evans Group shares,” Dave said, speaking slowly and deliberately.
Lucas paused for a moment, then nodded. “Fine. But you have to get engaged to Skylar first.”
“Deal,” Dave agreed, a mysterious glint flashing in his eyes.
Lucas’s mood visibly shifted when Dave agreed. His face softened, and he smiled with satisfaction. “I don’t want to push you into anything, Dave, but there are things you don’t yet understand. Everything I do is for your benefit. One day, you’ll thank me for choosing a good wife for you.”
“Mmm,” Dave responded, his expression unreadable.
“How about next month? I’ll pick a date for the engagement,” Lucas added, still smiling.
Skylar’s lips tightened, and she frowned slightly. She glanced at Dave, giving him a small, innocent nod.
Dave stood up. “Just make sure you keep your word after the engagement.”
