Chapter 16
Chapter 16
Wesley
My head is a freaking mess. There have been countless unexplainable rogue attacks this week. Two pack members are already dead, and not only that, but Brooks Industries is launching a new phone this week. Since I’m both the Alpha of my pack and this company’s CEO, my plate is full. I’m drowning in responsibilities, yet all I can think about is my seductive secretary and our baby.
We were at the pack doctor’s office yesterday. Our baby is old enough to know its gender, but none of us wanted the doctor to reveal it since Juanita will arrange a gender-reveal party sometime this weekend. I’m honestly excited. I can’t get my baby or Lily out of my head. And right now, my head is especially filled with thoughts of Lily.
Today the little seductive rogue is wearing a short skirt and a t-shirt that can barely contain her enlarged breasts. You can now see that Lily is starting to get rounder. The extra pounds suit her, and I have a feeling my grandma helped her pick her sexy clothes just to mess with my head.
I curse under my breath when Lily presses her arms together while writing something on her laptop. It makes her breasts almost pop out of her t-shirt, and my cock stirs and swells inside my shorts.
I want her so badly.
Is that wrong?
I promised Mirelle forever. She was the love of my life, my wife, and my best friend. I would never betray her. Her faded mark still sits proudly on my chest, and I promised myself never to love another soul after her death. But I can’t seem to fight my lust. It’s a losing battle that I fear I stand no chance of winning. Lily is too gorgeous.
My eyes stay glued to her irresistible body. She is absolutely glowing in the sun, but sadly, I’m not the only one who has noticed. The other men in my pack are looking at her too. Since I rejected her, she is a free-for-all. No one knows she is my mate, and I swallow a growl when I notice three werewolves staring at her ass.
Damn it, was it a mistake to bring Lily here?
We are not in the office today. Instead, we are in a forest, doing pack work. The trees tower around us while every werewolf here is taking a breather after an intense training session. Lily is the only one who isn’t winded. She is standing under a tall tree and typing away on her laptop at a foldable table I brought for her. She isn’t here to train but to keep me up-to-date with my company.
“Hey, Lily?”
I look up to see Alejandro, a pack member of mine, jogging up to Lily with a wound on his leg.
“Would you mind patching this up for me?”
Lily smiles at him. “Of course not,” she turns around to open her first-aid kit. “Do you want a glittery kitten bandaid or a unicorn one?”
Alejandro grins at Lily’s offer, “I will go with the unicorn one, sweetheart,” he winks at her, and I gasp.
What the hell?!
Is he flirting with her???
I storm up to Lily and Alejandro, shoving myself between them to take a look at the wound. It’s not even serious, just a scrape. He doesn’t even need a bandaid, but I will make sure he gets one alright!
“I got this, Alejandro,” I say, trying to keep the growl out of my voice. I take out a bandaid from Lily’s first-aid kit and slap it onto his wound, smoothing it down to make sure it holds in place.
Alejandro nods at me, looking uncomfortable, and wanders back to the group of werewolves. I can see him giving Lily one last longing glance before he turns around.
After the muppet is finally gone, Lily gives me a strange look and tilts her head. “What the heck was that about, Wesley? Am I not allowed to talk to your pack members now? I thought you were over the fact that I’m a rogue!”
Does she really think that’s the reason I slapped the band-aid onto Alejandro’s arm? I almost laugh. She really has no idea what is happening inside my brain, but that’s okay. I have no idea why I’m so freaking jealous either, and I much rather have her believe I’m acting this way because I don’t want her mingling with my pack members. It’s easier than admitting the truth: that I’m a possessive prick.
“Oh, so you’re not even going to answer me?” Lily sighs heavily and turns her attention back to her laptop. Her face is all red. “Whatever...I have work to do.”
My lips twitch. She is cute when she is mad...
Wait.
Cute?!
Oh my god, since when do I call females cute?
I finally realize that this is more serious than I thought. I’m turning into a total sap and immediately force myself to walk away from Lily since she is dangerous to my brain. I try to focus on my pack instead, talking and training with them. It works rather well...until I see Clinton walking up to Lily with a bouquet of flowers, he plucked from the field.
Goddamn it, what is this—the international flirt-with-Lily day?!
My hackles rise, but then I get an idea. My eyes scan the ground, stopping when they land on a sharp rock. I pick it up and take a deep breath before cutting my arm. It’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever done, and I’m not proud of it as I walk over to Lily’s table.
I tap her shoulder, making her spin around. “Wesley?”
Lily looks surprised to see me, and before she can say anything else, I hold out my arm for her without saying a single word. Her eyes widen into saucers when she sees the blood trickling down my skin.
“You poor thing!” she motions at a tree stump. “Sit down while I prepare some alcohol for your wound. It needs to be cleaned before we put on a bandaid.”
I do as she asks, totally taken aback by her sudden concern. I mean, of course, I knew she cared about me—I’m her boss and the father of her child—but I did not expect her to actually tend to my wounds without me asking her to.
“Now, let me take a look…” Lily moves closer to me, and her fingers feel like silk against my skin, sending shivers down my spine. She is so gentle, and it’s driving me crazy. All I want is to pull her into my lap and—
Lily pours alcohol over my wound, and I yelp in shock and withdraw my injured arm, holding it to my chest. “What the hell?” I glare at her. “What did you do that for?”
“Wesley, give me back your arm. I’m not done cleaning it.”
My eyes narrow in suspicion. I don’t trust her. “Are you going to rub alcohol over it?”
“Yes.”
I gasp in terror. “Then you can’t have it back!”
She rolls her eyes. “You’re such a big baby.”
“I’m not a baby!”
“Give me back your arm!”
“Not a chance—I wasn’t born yesterday.”
“I’m trying to help you, not kill you.”
Lily finally manages to grab my arm, but I use my height against her—I stand up to lift my arm above her head. Her eyes narrow, and I expect her to give up.
But that doesn’t happen.
The crazy woman jumps into my arms and clings to me like a koala. I stare into her face, entirely frozen in motion, when she growls, “Sit. Down.”
Like an obedient dog, I sit down with Lily in my lap. She looks extremely satisfied by this and reaches for my wound before applying alcohol to it.
I grumble. “That fucking hurts...”
Lily sighs. “I can’t believe you’re an Alpha. I’ve met three-year-olds that are tougher than you. Juanita’s daughter didn’t even blink when I cleaned her bruise; she is two.”
I can’t help the snort leaving my lips. I try to cover my mouth with the back of my fingers, but nothing can stop the laughter from leaving my lips. Lily is so cute when she scolds me. And my laughter grows louder when she stares at me like I’ve grown two heads.
That’s the last straw. I can no longer deny what I feel. I’m completely and utterly smitten. Unfortunately, my happiness is short-lived because I realize that I can’t have her. Lily is not mine to keep. I made a promise not to take another mate. It’s torture, but I will handle it. I have to.
For Mirelle.
“Why are you laughing?” Lily asks and shakes her head. “I swear men are more mysterious than women...”
I look into her beautiful eyes and fight the urge to tell her exactly what is going on inside my head. Truthfully, I want to tell her everything.
But I can’t.
I’m loyal to Mirelle; therefore, I mask my emotions and avert my gaze. “I was just thinking that you’re heavy...”
Lily’s face flushes red, and she grits her teeth. “You’re such an asshole. I’m only sitting in your lap so you won’t flee.”
For once, I actually agree with her: I am an asshole. Lily isn’t heavy in the slightest, but things are better with her believing I’m a jerk. That way, she won’t fall in love with me.
