Chapter 65
Chapter 65
The weight of despair hung heavy in the room, an oppressive fog that seemed impossible to escape. Zaiden sat slumped in a chair, staring blankly at the floor, his face gaunt and unshaven. Days had passed since Alessia’s abduction, and though he refused to admit it out loud, a part of him was beginning to lose hope. Every lead had turned cold, every effort fruitless. It felt like she was slipping further away with each tick of the clock.
Elena, however, refused to give up. She sat in front of her laptop in a cramped makeshift command center they had set up in Tobias’s office. Screens lined the walls, each one displaying surveillance footage, maps, or reports. The faint hum of machines filled the air, occasionally interrupted by Elena muttering to herself as she analyzed data.
“Elena,” Jonathan called softly, his voice tinged with concern. “You’ve been at this for hours. Take a break.”
She didn’t look up. “No,” she said flatly. “I’m not stopping until we find her. Every minute wasted is another minute Alessia is out there with… with them.”
Zaiden’s head snapped up at her words, and for a moment, his eyes flickered with life. “Anything new?” he asked, his voice raspy.
Elena shook her head. “Nothing solid yet. But I’m digging through Damian’s accounts—he had offshore bank accounts and connections to some shady individuals. If we can figure out who he owed, we might get closer.”
Zaiden leaned forward, his elbows resting on his knees. “What if we’re wrong? What if… what if she’s already—”
“Don’t,” Elena snapped, finally looking at him. Her eyes were red-rimmed but fierce. “Don’t you dare go there, Zaiden. She’s alive. I can feel it.”
He swallowed hard and nodded, though the gnawing doubt in his chest didn’t subside.
Hours dragged on, and fatigue began to settle over the group. Tobias and Jonathan alternated shifts monitoring security footage from nearby areas, hoping for any sign of movement that could be linked to Alessia. Meanwhile, Zaiden paced back and forth, restless and on edge.
Then, just as the atmosphere threatened to crush them all, Elena’s phone buzzed. She snatched it up immediately, her heart skipping a beat as she read the message.
“Anonymous tip,” she announced, her voice sharp and alert. The others crowded around her. “They say they know where Xanos is. And they claim he’s holding Alessia.”
“Xanos?” Zaiden growled, the name dripping with venom. “He’s behind this?”
Elena nodded grimly. “It makes sense. He’s one of the names Damian was linked to—an arms dealer with a history of using children as leverage in his deals.”
Zaiden’s fists clenched. “Where is he?”
“A nightclub in the industrial district,” Elena replied, showing them the message. “They’ve even provided coordinates.”
Tobias frowned. “This could be a trap. Anonymous tips are rarely trustworthy, especially with someone as dangerous as Xanos.”
Zaiden slammed his hand against the table. “I don’t care if it’s a trap. If there’s even the slightest chance she’s there, I’m going.”
Elena placed a hand on his arm, her expression cautious but understanding. “We’ll go, Zaiden. But we’re not rushing in blind. I’ll send the coordinates to our contact at the precinct. We’ll need backup.”
“No time for backup,” Zaiden argued, his voice rising. “Every second we waste—”
“Listen to her,” Jonathan interrupted firmly. “Xanos is dangerous. We’re not just dealing with a kidnapper—we’re dealing with a man who runs an empire of crime. You storm in there, and you might not make it out alive. Neither will Alessia.”
