The Barren Ex-Wife Gave Birth to Twins

Chapter 40

Chapter 40

The smell of freshly brewed coffee filled the small café as Amelia sat across from James, the usual ease of their conversations replaced by an undercurrent of tension. James leaned forward, his brows furrowed in concern.

“You’ve been pulling away,” he said softly, his warm eyes searching hers.

Amelia looked down at her cup, tracing the rim with her finger. “Things are complicated right now,” she murmured.

James didn’t let the moment pass. “Is it Ryan?” he asked directly.

Her silence was answer enough.

James exhaled, leaning back in his chair as he processed the unspoken truth. “Amelia,” he began, his tone measured but pained. “I care about you. A lot. But if you’re not ready to move on, I need to know. I can’t be just... waiting in the wings while you figure things out.”

Amelia’s chest tightened as guilt settled over her. “It’s not fair to you,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.

“No,” James agreed, his voice gentle but firm. “It’s not. But I also understand you’ve been through a lot. I just need honesty from you, Amelia. If there’s still something unresolved with Ryan, tell me.”

She finally looked up at him, her eyes shimmering with uncertainty. “I don’t know what I feel,” she confessed. “Sometimes I think I’ve moved on, but then he does something that reminds me of who he used to be. And I get so angry at myself for even caring.”

James nodded slowly, his jaw tightening. “I want to be patient, but I also need to protect myself. I’ve been through heartbreak too, and I don’t want to go through it again.”

Amelia reached across the table, her hand brushing his. “I’m sorry, James. You don’t deserve this.”

He gave her a small, sad smile. “No, I don’t. But I hope you figure it out soon—for your sake and for mine.”

The weight of his words lingered as they left the café. Amelia’s heart was heavy, caught between the quiet James offered and the storm of unresolved emotions Ryan always brought with him wherever he went. She knew she couldn’t stay in this limbo forever.
