Chapter 21
Chapter 21
Bellamy POV
I didn’t even think.
I turned on my heel and sprinted back toward Max’s office, my heart racing faster than my footsteps. The box was still clutched in my hand, the ribbon bouncing as I ran. I didn’t care if it looked crazy. I didn’t care if someone saw me. I needed to hear it from him.
I needed to hear why.
Why there was a half-naked woman walking out of his office like it was a damn hotel room. Why he smiled at me like I meant something—everything—and then couldn’t even wait 24 hours before crawling into someone else’s arms.
My heels slapped against the hallway tile, but then I slammed right into a hard chest. I gasped, stumbled backward, and hit the floor on my butt. The box flew out of my hand and landed a few feet away, sliding to a stop near the wall.
“Shit,” a familiar voice said. “Bellamy!”
It was Max.
He had just walked out of his office. Perfect timing. Or maybe the universe’s cruelest joke. “Are you okay?” he crouched down in front of me, reaching out to help me up.
I slapped his hand away. “Don’t.”
He blinked, stunned. “What’s wrong?”
I stood up on my own, brushing off my pants, my eyes sharp. “What’s wrong? Are you seriously asking me that?”
Max stood too, adjusting his shirt sleeves. “You ran into me.”
“I ran into you because I was trying to get answers!” I snapped. “Like why the hell a half-naked woman just walked out of your office five minutes ago!”
His face changed for a split second. Like a flicker of panic. Then it was gone.
“Oh. That.”
“That?” I scoffed. “That?! Are you kidding me?”
He looked down the hallway, then back at me. “It’s not what you think, Bellamy.”
“Then what is it, Max?” My voice cracked. “Because from where I was standing, it looked a lot like you had company. And not the business kind.”
Max sighed. “It was… it was just something physical. A craving. That’s it.”
I blinked.
He said it so easily. Like it was an energy drink. A snack. A whim.
“She doesn’t mean anything to me,” he added quickly. “No feelings involved. My heart—” he stepped forward “—my heart belongs to you.”
I almost laughed. Or cried. Or vomited. Actually, I really did feel like vomiting.
I took a shaky breath and shook my head. “You seriously expect me to stand here and feel special because you gave your heart to me while you were screwing someone else just for fun?”
He opened his mouth, but I held up my hand.
“Don’t. Just… don’t say anything else.”
His eyes flicked to the side—and that’s when he saw it.
The box.
He stepped toward it, leaned down, and picked it up. “What’s this?”
My heart stopped.
He looked at the ribbon, then opened it carefully. Inside, the soft baby blanket. And tucked beneath it—
The ultrasound photo. He pulled it out slowly, stared at it in confusion, then looked up at me.
“Bellamy…”
