Chapter 18
Chapter 18
Bellamy POV
“Bellamy, Mr. Max Forsythe wants to see you in his office,” the receptionist said as soon as I walked through the glass doors of Forsythe Enterprises.
I stopped in my tracks, hugging my bag a little tighter against my shoulder. My heart thumped once—hard. “Max?”
She nodded. “Yes. He said to go up as soon as you arrived.”
Great. First thing on a Tuesday morning, and I was already being summoned like a student called to the principal’s office. I tried not to overthink it. Maybe it was about the project. Maybe it was about Eden.
Or maybe… it wasn’t.
I stepped into the elevator and hit the button for the top floor. The mirrored walls reflected back a girl who looked like she hadn’t slept well. Because she hadn’t. I was pregnant, confused, and stuck between two men who didn’t know half of the truth.
The elevator dinged, and I stepped out. Max’s assistant wasn’t at her desk, which was unusual. The door to his office was cracked open.
I knocked softly.
“Come in,” Max’s voice called.
I pushed the door open. He was sitting behind his desk, jacket off, sleeves rolled up, tie loosened just enough to look polished and relaxed at the same time. He looked up and smiled.
“Bellamy.”
“Hi,” I said, stepping in cautiously. “You wanted to see me?”
“Yeah,” he said, rising from his chair. “Close the door, will you?”
I hesitated, then did as he asked. The soft click of the door behind me made the room feel ten times smaller.
Max walked around the desk and leaned against it, arms crossed.
“How are you feeling?” he asked, his voice a little softer now. “After everything on the island?”
“I’m okay,” I replied. “Thank you again… for rescuing us.”
“I didn’t just come to rescue you,” he said. “I came because I had to. I couldn’t stop thinking about you.”
My stomach tightened. “Max…”
He stepped closer. “I know you’re confused. I know this is all a lot. But I meant what I said the other night. You matter to me, Bellamy. And I don’t want to pretend anymore.”
I stared at him, frozen.
“I think about you all the time,” he continued. “At work. At home. When you were on that damn island. You’re smart, strong, stubborn as hell… and maybe that’s exactly why I can’t stop thinking about you.”
My breath hitched. “Max, you don’t even know me.”
“But I want to,” he said, voice dropping lower.
I couldn’t breathe.
“I know we got off to a strange start,” he said. “But I don’t care. I want to try. You and me.”
I opened my mouth, but no words came out.
His hand reached toward me, fingers brushing mine.
“I’m serious about you,” he said. “Bellamy, I—”
Before he could finish, the door burst open. Tristan stood there, chest rising and falling, eyes locked on Max’s hand touching mine.
His gaze moved slowly to my face.
