Chapter 80
Chapter 80
Leah's POV
On my way to work, Darren remained silent.
It was a bit awkward, so I tried to break the ice.
"Did I say something that offended you last night when I was drunk?" I asked.
"Well, technically speaking, it's not offending," Darren took a glance at Troy, who was driving with a deadpan face, and smirked. "It's kind of flattering."
"I'm sorry, but I'm sitting right here." Troy protested. "Please don't let me hear anything that I'm not supposed to hear. I will have to report everything to Jalin, or else he will shout at me again."
"Did you and Jalin find the poor man's abducted wife yesterday?" I asked.
"Yeah," Troy replied briefly.
"And?" I said.
"And nothing happened. We couldn't find the man who had abducted her. By the time we found that woman, the abductor had already left," Troy said.
I looked out of the window and said, "He killed that poor woman, didn't he?"
Troy looked nervous and said, "No, Leah. The woman's fine."
"Troy, I'm not stupid. Just tell me the truth. The abductor will not leave anyone alive to identify him," I said.
"OK, OK," Troy said impatiently. "The woman was found dead, altogether with her unborn baby. We've lost all the clues to figure out who's behind all this. Your life is still in danger."
I covered my face with stress. My heart was bleeding. I couldn't believe this was happening to me. An innocent woman lost her life with her baby. It was all because of me.
"If you want to yell at me, please do it. Jalin was yelling at me all day. It seems that I can't do anything right these days. He's seriously thinking of firing me."
"No one is going to get fired, Troy. You're doing your best to protect me. You're very good at what you're doing. That's why I'm still alive," I tried to comfort him.
"It's not your fault, Leah. It's the killer's fault. He chose to hurt innocent people, not you." Darren held my hands and said.
His hands were warm and steady, which was exactly what I needed at that time.
I squeezed his hands gently to express my gratitude.
"Don't worry, Leah. I'm going to find the killer for you," Darren said in a soothing, velvet voice.
Troy complained, "I'm sorry, but am I fired? I thought I was assigned to take charge of your safety and security. I can't work if there're too many cooks in the kitchen!"
"Troy, again, you're not fired. You can't protect me and investigate the case at the same time. Darren's here temporarily for help.
"Well, you're the boss. It's your call," Troy mumbled.
"I'll go check the dead woman's body. Did you seal the murder scene?" Darren asked.
"Yeah, no one entered that place except me and Jalin," Troy said.
"Great. Hopefully, we could find some clues left by the killer." Darren said. "Troy, leave the murder case with me. Take good care of Leah at work. I'll contact you as soon as there's a lead."
As soon as I arrived at the company, I saw Laura waiting for me in the lobby.
"Leah, we've got a busy day. Your schedule is packed. Are you ready for the morning briefing?" Laura asked.
"Sure. I was born ready." I said as we were walking into the private elevator.
Just before the door closed, a pair of hands held the door.
I lifted my eyes and saw Ava Dinara standing behind the elevator door.
"Do you have a thing with this elevator or something, Dinara? It's a private elevator, which is clearly labeled on the door in seven languages!" Laura said in a stern voice.
"I know, but I want to have a conversation with Miss Lewyn and some bitch just doesn't give me a slot on Miss Lewyn's schedule," Ava said.
"That's because Miss Lewyn is the new VP of this company, which means that she has a very limited amount of time dealing with bitches on a daily basis!" Laura snarled.
"Do you call me a bitch?!" Ava widened her eyes and put her hands on her hips.
"I don't know. Are you a bitch? Oops, sorry for rolling my eyes loudly." Laura rolled her eyes and said.
"What do you want to say? You can tell me right now," I said to Ava.
"I've made up an appointment for you and Alpha Kyle tonight at the Galactic Polo Club. He's very interested in our new project. He wants to have a business dinner with you and talk about it." Ava said with malice and hatred in her eyes.
"Sure. I'll be there," I said and pressed the close button on the door. "Just email me the time and location."
With the door slowly shutting in Ava's face, she shouted, "This is a very good opportunity and I decided to give it to you! Do remember that!"
Her voice faded as the door fully closed.
"This bitch is really a pain in the ass," Laura said with a big frown. "Why did you take her to offer? You know she's definitely setting up a trap to frame you."
I said, "If she wants to play, I'll play along with her. Did you find out what Alpha Kyle is up to?"
Laura nodded and said, "Yeah. I called Bleiz last night and he thought it was a booty call. After a few rounds of beer, he started to spill the beans. It turned out that all the affiliated companies in Moonhowlers Pack are losing money. It hasn't been shown on their annual report yet, so only a few selected people know about it. They absolutely have nothing substantial to offer and they owe a large amount of money to the Kingdom Central Bank. I guess Ava wants you to take it over and clean up the mess. If you can't clean it up, she will accuse you of being incompetent in your new position."
"Good, bring it on," I mumbled.
As the elevator door opened, I saw Gean holding a big bunch of flowers, standing in front of me.
I was surprised and said, "What's this?"
"It's from your husband, Miss Lewyn."
"Lucas brought me flowers?" I frowned and took them in my arms.
I recognized that they were the rare species of peonies I kept in the garden in the backyard of his house.
I inhaled the scent of the flower and closed my eyes. It felt like I was brought back to the backyard again.
Gardening was the only thing that kept me functioning when I was staying at Lucas' house. I talked to those flowers, wept to them, and they were the only ones who would accompany me when Lucas wasn't around.
I didn't miss those days, but I certainly missed those flowers. Lucas was so thoughtful to bring me all those flowers.
I opened my eyes and saw a small note among the flowers -
"For my never dying love.
P.S. I will only sign for this.
