Chapter 99
Chapter 99
Soon, Emily found herself in Friedel's presence.
As she prepared to articulate her purpose, the man abruptly raised his head. In a cold voice, Friedel suggested, "Come on, let's go into the study first." He turned and ascended the stairs.
Positioned behind him, Emily tilted her head slightly to observe his complete figure, the cadence of his walk, the sweep of his hand movements... It all felt so familiar.
Emily's thoughts involuntarily drifted back to Derek, and she let out a small sigh.
Was it merely the yearning for him that made any semblance seem like him?
Suppressing her emotions, Emily followed him up the stairs. The study was spacious, and Friedel settled on the balcony. It was about ten meters from where Emily stood by the door.
"I've agreed to the collaboration you proposed earlier," Friedel declared, sitting on an office chair, his dark eyes sweeping over her blandly. "However, I need to assess your capabilities first."
Emily responded with a light tone, "And what would it take for you to see what I'm capable of?"
Friedel opened a locked drawer, tossing a stack of ledgers onto the desk. "This is last year's revenue ledger from the black party. There are numerous issues. If you can identify ten problems, you'll be considered capable."
Taking the ledger, Emily sat at the opposite end of the desk and meticulously examined it. Before she reached a third of the way, she had already found ten discrepancies. Walking over with the ledger, she pointed to the first page, "This accounting ledger is substandard; the first line is incorrect."
Friedel listened attentively, his fingers tapping rhythmically on the desktop. When Emily finished, she awaited a response, glancing up to find him deep in thought.
His black hair matched Derek's, and there was a vaguely familiar scent about him.
Emily's mind went blank. Involuntarily, she took a step closer to him, narrowing the distance between them.
The scent reminded her of that night five years ago, of every evening she and Derek had spent entangled. It was a fragrance unique to Derek.
Emily couldn't quell the wild beating of her heart. Once again, she recollected the man's size, height, facial contours, those eyes of his, and the tone of his voice. An absurd thought emerged from Emily's heart.
She slowly lifted her hand, moving it inch by inch toward the man's golden mask. However, just as her hand was about a centimeter away from the man's face, he suddenly raised his hand and gripped her wrist. "What are you doing?" His thick, low voice jolted Emily's heart.
She composed herself and spoke with forced calmness, "Can I see what you look like?"
"If you see my real face, you have to be my woman." Friedel wrapped his hand around Emily's slender waist, his husky and seductive voice suppressing some emotion.
If the man in front of her was truly Derek, her husband, her body wouldn't reject his touch. But if it was Derek, why was he acting as if he didn't recognize her? Was she overthinking it?
Emily quickly took a step back, saying, "Sorry, I don't want to look at your face right now." However, Friedel forcefully pulled her into his arms.
His hands slid down Emily's back and rested on her butt.
Emily's face turned cold, and she raised her leg to kick out, but Friedel caught her ankle in his large palm. She attempted to split Friedel's arm with a backhand, but it was as unyielding as brass and iron, showing no reaction to her attack.
Clutching her back teeth, eyes narrowed, Emily raised her hand to grab the edge of the man's golden mask. With a slight push, she ripped the mask off.
The first thing that met her eyes was a hideous scar running from the corner of the man's eye across half of his face. Immediately, Emily was viciously stunned.
It was Derek's face!
The face of Derek that had haunted her countless times in her dreams...
Emily's hand trembled as she slowly raised it to caress Friedel's face.
However, Friedel's face was cold as ice.
"Do you know what happens when you take my mask without authorization?" Friedel's cruel and cold words resonated again.
Emily's tears fell uncontrollably.
Derek had never spoken to her in such a tone. Why would he do this to her? Why didn't he recognize her?
Why did he treat her like a complete stranger when she showed up in front of him?
Her tears fluttered and fell, one by one crystallized on the carpet.
Friedel, whose face was originally cold and thorough, suddenly panicked.
"Why are you crying?" Friedel asked, somewhat wringing his hands.
"Don't you know who I am?" Emily asked, choking back a sob, her voice quivering with a hint of hope.
Friedel's jaw tensed as he pursed his lips and said, "Don't cry."
Emily's eyes blurred with tears as she looked at the familiar face in front of her.
The scar across half of his face should have been left a month ago and was still healing.
Just how much he had been hurt and how many unknown things he had gone through to get to this point.
Emily jolted back to remember what Serena said to her.
Serena thought she had failed to cleanse his memory, but what if she have actually succeeded?
So Derek had forgotten who he as, didn't recognize her, and didn't recognize a few of the kids.
If that was the case, it all made sense.
Emily raised her hand and slowly caressed the scar on his face, her voice choked with emotion as she asked, "Where did this scar come from?"
Her eyes were filled with soft light and deep emotion, making Friedel's heart involuntarily soften.
He spoke slowly, "I don't remember; I woke up with an injury on my face."
Emily took a deep breath. "You don't remember anything from before, do you?"
Friedel was about to nod when he suddenly paused again.
His memory loss was only clear to a few core members for now.
He lightly changed the topic: "Don't you want me to help you find someone? Tell me all the information about the person you're looking for, and I'll order it down."
Emily looked down and wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes.
He had lost his memory; he simply forgot about her for a while.
Emily then took out her cell phone.
She tapped on a group photo and handed it over. "This is my husband, Derek. He's twenty-six years old, five-foot-eight, about your size."
Her eyes remained fixed on the man in front of her as she spoke.
He had already donned his golden mask again, and she could only guess his emotions from his hawk-like eyes.
The group photo was intimate, with both wrapped around each other, faces pressed together, wearing bright, happy smiles.
"The man I was looking for was none other than my husband, but that's no longer necessary; I've found him," Emily said, looking at Friedel with a serious firmness. "You are my husband, Derek."
Friedel's dark eyes met hers. "Did you just say that I am your husband?"
Emily was about to nod when she was pulled forcefully into Friedel's arms. "What are you, and what is your purpose in approaching me?" he demanded, pressing her against the wall.
Annoyed, she replied, "I don't have any purpose. I'm just a poor woman looking for her husband."
They were so close that, when she struggled, her collar pulled away, revealing snow-white skin at the base of her neck.
A sudden fire burned inside Friedel's body, and his body hardened like iron.
Feeling his abnormality, Emily was stunned. "Don't mess around. This is not the time to think about such things."
"The moment I woke up in Seriski covered in wounds, I knew that none of the people around me could be trusted," the man said coldly. "If you insist that I am your husband, then prove it."
From a silent and nameless follower at the bottom, step by step to this position, countless instances of betrayal on the road had taught him not to trust anyone. Because the person who betrayed him in the back was often the one he trust the most.
Looking at Derek's cold and almost unsympathetic demeanor, Emily's heart swelled with grief. She had no knowledge of what Derek had endured to become this way.
Closing her eyes briefly, she then reopened them and firmly declared, "Okay, I will prove it to you!"
Even though she hadn't conducted a paternity test for the man standing before her and her own child, she was already one hundred percent certain that this man was Derek. Because the connection between them didn’t deceive.
She couldn't help but feel drawn to this man who claimed not to trust anyone but showed no intention of hurting her at all.
It had to be Derek!
Emily took a step towards him, grasped his hand, and led him into the lounge adjacent to the study.
Friedel's suppressed desire erupted like a flash flood in that moment. He pressed Emily's shoulder and asked, "Are you sure you don't regret..."
Emily realized that they were originally a couple, and she had nothing to regret. Without uttering a word, she lowered her head to unbutton her collar, one button at a time.
Friedel's sanity immediately flew out the window as he held the woman's slender waist. His lips kissed her neck, with fine and dense kisses falling, gradually filling Emily's empty and silent heart.
She responded to the man's kiss, her hand fumbling to undo the belt of his pants. Her eyes lowered, and she truly saw the man's lower abdomen under the green birthmark. It was crisscrossed with more than a dozen injuries—whip wounds, cuts, burns.
In this past month, what had he gone through?
Emily's tears couldn't be held back. Derek's kisses fell on her face, swallowing all her tears.
