Chapter 78
Chapter 78
A few days later, at Aaron and Ian's birthday party, Emily met Derek's parents.
It was more like a family dinner than a birthday party.
Derek has a close relationship with his family. They rarely hold banquets because they just want to spend special days with family members.
Emily stood with Chris and Diane, feeling a bit nervous. She glared at Derek and blamed him for not explaining clearly.
Now, she felt as if she was brought home by her boyfriend to visit his parents.
Emily didn't want to think much about Derek's purpose, yet the situation was tricky.
However, the kids were immune to that and were having a great time.
Aaron was clingy to Emily and held her hand all the time. But later, Ian and Diane dragged him to play with Legos.
Derek's parents were nice to Emily, so she was less nervous.
She didn't realize that she was nervous not because they were strangers, but because they were Derek's parents.
Adolf was a serious man, but when he looked at Emma, his eyes turned soft.
Emma was a kind lady. She was cheerful and had clear eyes.
It was easy to tell that the old couple were still deeply in love.
Emily wished to have such a beautiful family since she was a little girl.
After the meal, the four children had fun together. Diane held her doll and was combing its hair.
"There is still some hair you didn't comb," Ian said anxiously.
Aaron and Chris' game was too hard for Ian, so he chose to watch Diane dress up her dolls. Even though he didn't like playing with dolls, it was much simpler.
"Let's change her clothes. She's going to a friend's house for dinner today," Diane said seriously to Ian.
Ian didn't understand. The clothes the doll was wearing were just fine, so what was the point of changing them?
Diane refused to let Ian help choose clothes for the doll.
When they were arguing, Emma sat down with a smile.
"She is going to a friend's house. Then she needs to dress up."
Diane had an ally now and enjoyed her time with Emma.
Adolf was chatting with Emily. He had long heard that Emily was Aaron's new therapist.
Since Derek invited Emily to their family feast, Adolf couldn't help but think more about it.
Adolf only asked a few questions, but Derek already stood in front of Emily.
"It's the kids' birthday today. Please have some fun."
Adolf noticed that Derek was nervous. After Derek inherited the family business, he had never seen Derek having such an expression again.
Derek looked at Adolf pleadingly. He had not yet confessed his love to Emily, and it was not a good time to mention it now because Emily only wanted revenge.
Adolf snorted at the sight of Derek, but he let Derek go.
Derek let out a sigh of relief.
Watching the father and son, Emily was surprised by the way they interacted with each other since she had never considered Derek to be a perky type.
Around 10 pm, Chris and Diane were getting tired. The dinner was coming to an end, and Emily was getting ready to leave with her children.
"I enjoyed the evening," Emma hugged Emily and said sincerely.
Emily asked Chris and Diane to say goodnight to Emma and Adolf.
Although Adolf looked serious, he was actually an easygoing person.
Emily saw Adolf protecting the children with his hands and preventing them from falling.
The children picked flowers and put them on Adolf. Emily saw that Adolf cherished the flowers and kept them carefully.
Emma was also a kind and gentle person.
Emily was glad to get to know them.
"Adolf, Emma, I don't want to leave." Diane pressed her face against Emma's and wrapped her little arms around Emma's and Adolf's necks.
Though they met for the first time, Diane had won the hearts of Adolf and Emma.
Adolf adored Diane. He had two grandsons, but he also wished to have a cute and pretty granddaughter like Diane.
As soon as Adolf saw Diane and Chris today, he liked them and he couldn't explain why.
Emma was the same.
Although Emma did not notice Derek's affection for Emily as quickly as Adolf, she still knew Derek well as Derek's mother.
When Derek looked at Emily, his eyes glinted with tenderness. Emma had never seen her son fall in love before.
Years ago, Emma was suddenly informed that she had two grandsons. Before she could digest the news, Rose, claiming to be the mother of Derek's children, appeared. However, when Emma saw how Derek interacted with Rose, she knew that Derek's decision to marry Rose was only for the sake of the children and that he had no feelings for Rose.
Adolf was always worried that Emma would be deceived. Women's intuition toward other women was acute. Therefore, Emma never liked Rose because she knew that Rose was just possessive of Derek, not in love with him.
Rose was like a person who obtained expensive jewels and eagerly showed off her treasure.
For Rose, Derek was like a precious gem. How could Emma be happy about it?
Emily and her two children got into the car and left. Emma was worried that Aaron and Ian would catch a cold if they stayed outside for a long time, so she took them back into the house.
Derek kept watching in the direction that Emily's car was leaving until it disappeared. Then, he turned around and went in.
Just as he turned his head, he saw Adolf.
"Finished watching?" Adolf said in a displeased tone.
Derek shrugged in embarrassment.
Adolf glared at Derek and walked ahead of him.
Derek hurried to catch up.
They took a walk in the courtyard.
"Have you decided?" Adolf couldn't help but ask first.
Tonight, he found that Derek was more deeply involved than Emily.
Derek nodded earnestly.
"I feel that you're the only one making an effort. Haven't you told her yet?"
Derek recalled Emily's smile under the sunshine, and his heart softened.
"Now is not a good time. She has more important things to deal with. She won't choose other guys, since I'm the best."
Derek sounded confident.
Adolf found Derek stupid and was a little mad.
He sighed. Derek had a great career, but Adolf also wished Derek to enjoy family life.
When Adolf found out that Emily had become Aaron's therapist, he had someone collect her information.
After getting along with Emily, Adolf realized that she was different from what the rumors said about her. Emily's love for Aaron and Ian was real, so Adolf did not object.
Derek also saw through it, which was why he introduced Emily to Adolf and Emma.
He believed that Emily had the kind of charm to make his parents fall for her.
He pictured a happy life with four children after Emily and he got married.
Derek's heart was filled with anticipation, and he couldn't wait to know Eric's progress.
Though it was late at night, he dialed Eric's phone number.
Eric was called out of bed, but he sobered up quickly and answered the phone with a clear voice.
"Rose is not Aaron and Ian's mother, but..." Eric hesitated before saying, "She is related to them."
Derek held his phone tightly, feeling that the scent of that night was similar to the scent of Emily.
The puzzle was about to be solved.
