Chapter 100. THE UNPLANNED TRIP

"Your birthday is next week Sophia, do you have any plans for it?" Sarah asked.

We are still in the dining when she asked me that question, a few minutes after she had reminded me that she thought I was pregnant but didn't say the word out.

"That's true. I do not want a big gathering. Just a little gathering with friends and family," I replied.

"That's true. I just remembered," Adrian said.

"What?" I asked.

"I will be traveling for a business trip next and I am not sure if I will be spending a week or less than that," he explained.

"So you might not be present for my birthday?" I asked.

"Not actually. There is no certain date yet. It's an impromptu trip and I have to leave tomorrow morning. I wanted to tell you but it skipped my mind until now and the number of days I'd use is u known," he replied.

"You will be gone for a week or more, is that what you are trying to say?" I asked.

I wasn't happy hearing that we might not be able to celebrate my birthday together. I just hope he spends more than a week because I would love to celebrate my twenty-first with him by my side.

"Yes. It could be less than a week or a week or more than that. I'm not sure as there are no confirmed dates yet but I won't be gone for two weeks, that's what's certain," he replied.

"A business trip? Is it concerning the stuff we spoke about the other day?" My father asked.

"Yes sir. Mr. Steele said to go over the conclusion and there are some other plans we will have to make. We will begin with the expansion this week due to changes," Adrian replied.

I did not know what to say anymore. He won't be around. There is no certainty and it made me lose my appetite.

"I see," my father nodded his head.

"So Sophia, what's your plan now?" Sarah asked.

I've always looked forward to my twenty-first birthday and celebrating it with my loved ones is something I've always looked forward to and Adrian's absence will affect me.

We ate in silence after that. I could feel Adrian's gaze on me but I did not stare back at him. He should be able to be with me that day. It's my special day.

"Thanks for today. I appreciate it," my father said to Adrian.

"Thanks for having us over," Adrian replied.

My mom pulled me closer to her and hugged me. "Take care of yourself Sophia and remember to go see a doctor or get one of those tests. I am a mother and I know what it is that I am talking about," she whispered in my ears.

They were all frightening me. I am not pregnant but what if I am? What will I do about it? I am not ready to have a baby but if truly I am pregnant then I will just have to accept it and be ready to be a mom.

Being a mom scares me. I'm still a child! I chuckled when I thought of that.

"What's funny?" Adrian asked and I shook my head.

"Take care of yourself mom," I told her and she nodded her head.

We bid them farewell before getting into the car.

"Are you sure that you are alright?" Adrian asked as soon as we entered our room.

"Yes. Is there a problem?" I asked him.

"No. Not at all. I am just worried. A little worried that you are not happy with me," he said and I sighed.

I sat down on the bed while running my finger through my hair. I wasn't really happy because he won't be with me on my big day. It hurts and I do not know what to say.

I mean he has worked and I know I am his number one priority but I do want to make things difficult for him.

"My birthday is next week and I look forward to celebrating with my love ones and you but you won't be present and I'd be lying if I said that I am happy about it," I told him.

He came closer to me, squats in front of me, and held my hands.

"It could be less than a week or a week or more than a week. One thing is certain, I can miss everything in this life but not your big day. Won't you a way to be with you that day? I will my love. I will celebrate that day with you," he expatiates.

"Then why did you say that you might not be able to?" I asked, tears in my eyes, threatening to come out any time soon.

"That's because I might not be able to but that doesn't mean I won't come. I do not mind coming and sending that day with you and having to get back as soon as I spend that day with you. Trust me when I tell you that I will make sure to finish everything before your big day. I will spend the day with you," he assured me.

"Goodness. You do not know how worried I was. I didn't feel good earlier but now I do," I told him.

"I love you, Sophia," he whispered to me.

"I love you, Adrian," I whispered back to him before he kissed me on my lips.

"I can breathe well because I have you by my side. Thanks for coming into my life and thanks for being at my side," he said and kissed me again on the lips.

"Thank you for all you do Adrian. I appreciate you," I told him and kissed him on his lips.

"I love you, my baby," he pulled me closer to him and wrapped his arms around me.

"I love you," I replied, wrapping my arms around him too.
