Chapter 70. DISAGREEMENT
Chapter 70. DISAGREEMENT
SOPHIA CASTILLO
"Can we speak now?" I asked Adrian as soon as he was done speaking to his secretary.
"Yes my love," he said, and then his landline rang.
"One second please," he told me before going to answer the call.
Adrian came back to me after some minutes on the phone. "What is going on in my queen's mind? Do you want to talk about it?" He asked me, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear.
"Nothing is happening with me but I just want to ask or rather plead to you on behalf of someone," I informed him and the skin between his brows creased.
"Plead on behalf of someone? Who?" He asked.
Earlier when he was speaking to his secretary, I realized that I could see the lady who was pleading for another chance from his office due to the transparency of the glass.
I pulled him with me. "I am not demanding from you, not at all. I just want you to consider me, okay?" I tell him.
He halted on his track making me halt too on my track and stared at me with a questioning look on his face.
"What's going on?" he asked.
"Can you just come with me so I can show it to you?" I asked and he let out a small sigh before following me.
"That lady over there," I pointed at her.
Not she was on her phone, talking to someone.
"Her? That lady?" He asked and I nodded my head.
"What's it with her?" He asked me and I stared at him with a questioning look on my face.
"Do you not recognize her or you do but you have no interest in hearing what I have to say?" I questioned.
"The thief?" He said, sounding almost harsh.
"She said she returned the money," I told him.
"After three days. She works for the financing department and she thought it was okay to steal money from the company. The head of the department had put her in charge that day and then she took advantage and stole the money and the head of the department had to face consequences for it if he doesn't give a report of how that huge amount of money went missing and then three days later the money was back so who do you think would be called a thief? The head of the department, I fired him and yesterday night he came to me with the CCTV footage of that girl taking the money. The footage was gone when we searched and suddenly it was back. She denied taking the money to her last breath until the video was played infront of her and then she started to act remorseful and bring out crocodile tears," Adrian expatiate, a hint of irritation laced in his tone.
The girl had not explained it to me this way and now that I heard it from Adrian, I still felt bad for her. I know it was wrong of her to steal, get her boss fired because of her, and then lie to the very end until evidence was brought but she returned it.
"She returned it right?" I asked, eating to confirm.
"Yes she did," Adrian walked towards the couch to sit down.
"What of the head of the finance department? Did you reinstate him?" I asked.
"Yes, I did," be answered.
"Can you..." I took in a deep breath and exhaled.
"Can you forgive her?" I asked.
Adrian stared at me immediately with his eyes slightly widened.
"Forgive her? Are you asking that forgive a thief?" He asked, sounding a little harsh but his voice wasn't loud as usual.
"No..." I moved closer to him and sat down beside him on the couch.
"That's not what or maybe that's what I'm saying. She said her father needed surgery and she had to urgently pay for his surgery and so she did that to help him but she did return it," I said.
"Are you listening to yourself?" Adrian asked and I swallowed the lump that formed in my throat.
"I doubt you are," he said.
"Firstly she stole and then she returned but did you care to ask how she got the money to return it? Did you? Do you know if she stole from somewhere else? Don't come and plead on behalf of someone and you should know I do not trust people easily and now that she stole from me, I can't let her work here because she is not trustworthy," Adrian chastised.
I already asked the lady to wait for me and it would be bad if I can't get Adrian to give her another chance.
"She returned it and..." Adrian cuts me off.
"Enough Sophia, enough. I do not want to hear it," he said firmly and sternly and the fact he called me by my name is enough for me to know that he was angry and I should have just ended it there but I didn't.
"Can you at least listen to me?" I asked and he got up from the couch and I followed suit.
"She needed money for her sick father and..."
"She could have come directly to me and I would have helped her instead of her stealing from the money needed for a project," he countered.
"She should have come to you? Do you realize that you are her boss and not just anyone can approach you?" I retorted.
"Don't start Sophia. Your point is useless," he said curtly.
"It is not. She is sorry and all she asked for is another chance. At least give her a chance to prove herself or maybe give her a chance to work here until she gets another job," I told him, holding his arms but he pulled his hands from my hold immediately.
"I'm not giving her a chance Sophia and she wasn't remorseful until she was caught. If she was remorseful, when I fired the head of the department she works, she should have come clean. She should have explained to me but I still wouldn't have forgiven her because I hate women like her the most," he said through his teeth, his voice low as always.
I noticed that whenever Adrian was angry, his voice becomes lower than he usually speaks.
"Do you realize she can't be blamed right? Do you? Who would openly want to come out during that situation? I know it's wrong..."
"Exactly. It's wrong and that's the point and no matter what you say or do Sophia, I won't be listening to you and I won't be giving her another chance. You can ask me for any other thing and I will do it but for her, I can't and I won't," he said firmly.
"For my sake can you..."
"Enough Sophia! I already told you I'm tired of this. You telling me to give her another chance won't make me because she stole from me and she only apologized when caught. She didn't even apologize then, she only apologized when the evidence was brought in front of her and that is why I can't give her another chance. That should serve as a lesson for her," he expatiates.
"Okay. It's fine. I can't ask you for a favor and then you'd do it for me, that's just what you just told me, it's fine," I told him, getting my stuff from the couch.
"Stop trying to make the issues about us. You know very well that if do anything to make you happy and I have proved that a lot of time but this one I can't and it's not about you. I can't," he told me.
"That's fine. Just remember you called me by my name three times," I spat out before walking out of his office.
I ran my finger through my hair as I thought of what to do.
I already told the girl I'd help her but Adrian has already made his decision and there was no change to that.
I took out my phone from my bag to call my father.
"Hello dad," I said on the phone as soon as he answered the call. I pressed the elevator button and it opened for me to enter.
"How are you feeling baby girl?" He asked me as the elevator door closed.
"I am feeling good. How are you feeling? And mom?" I asked.
"We are fine. Why did you call?" He asked me.
"Can I ask you for a favor father?" I said.
"A favor? What is it?" He asked me.
I let out a small sigh. "I have someone who is in urgent need of a job. She has worked in the financing department but she is willing to take on any job as long as she earns," I told him on the phone.
"So you want me to give her a job?" He asked me.
"Yes, father. Any job opening," I told him.
"Not yet Sophia but If there is, I'd get back to you," he told me.
"Okay, father. Thank you," I told him.
"You are welcome," he replied before ending the call.
The elevator door opened and I stepped out of it. Immediately my phone rang in my jacket pocket.
I took it out to see that it was Adrian calling but I was done conversing with him and so I didn't answer the call and ended it.
My phone rang again and I decided to switch it off.
When I came out, the lady saw me and quickly walked toward me.
"Why didn't you admit that you took it when you were caught?" I asked her and she hide her face in shame.
"I just couldn't. I didn't want to lose the job. It was...I am the breadwinner of my family. My... My mother had been working as a cleaner as that is the only job she can do because she doesn't have a high school diploma talk more of a college degree. I can cater to my family because of this job and so I couldn't lose it," she explained with tears streaming down her cheek.
"The head of the finance department got fired because of you and also where did you find the money to return?" I asked her.
"I ended up not using the money. A friend of mine back in college helped pay the bills but the damage was already done the next day and I jug didn't know how to come clean and return the money," she explained.
I felt bad for her.
"I do not intend to invade your privacy and all but who is the male friend of yours from college and what does he do?" I asked her.
She took out her phone from her purse. "This is an image of him. He is from a wealthy family In case you think I am lying. The truth is, he happened to see me pleading to the doctor to carry on with my father's surgery. He paid before I arrived but I have already stolen from the company's money," she explained.
I sighed deeply. "I have heard you. What's your name?" I asked her.
"I'm Marilyn," she replied.
"Adrian had refused to give you a second chance but you do not have to worry. I called my father for a job opening and he said he'd get back to me," I informed her.
"Adrian?" She asked rhetorically.
"Yes. He is my husband," I informed her and she gasped.
"Thanks so much... What is your name?" She asked me.
"Sophia," I answered.
"Why don't you give me your number so that I can let you know when my father gets back to me," I told her.
"Thank you so much, Sophia. I appreciate it. You do not know how grateful I am to you. I will never repeat my action ever again," she told me.
"I hope you never do," I said to her.
I collected her number before leaving.
