The Beta’s Ugly Daughter

Chapter 30

Chapter 30

Gail’s POV

I woke up in a room that still felt unfamiliar but was undeniably mine now.

Sunlight streamed through the tall windows of Wyatt's bedroom, our bedroom, casting everything in a warm golden glow that made even the morning air feel different. Softer, kinder, like the world itself had shifted to accommodate this new version of my life.

It had only been a few days since the mating ceremony that had changed everything, but those days felt like a lifetime. I'd moved in with Wyatt immediately after our dramatic departure from the ceremonial hall, and we hadn't been apart since. Not for meals, not for sleep, not for the countless hours we'd spent learning each other's bodies and hearts with a desperation that came from years of believing this could never be possible.

Our nights had been filled with touch and closeness and lovemaking that left us both sore and breathless but neither of us minded. If anything, the physical evidence of our connection felt like proof that this wasn't just another dream I'd eventually wake up from. It had become a new rhythm for us, this constant need to be near each other, to confirm through touch that we were real, that this was real.

The house was quiet around us, peaceful in a way I'd never experienced before. I shifted under the silk sheets, so different from the rough blankets I'd grown up with, and marveled at how right it felt to wake up here, in this space that smelled like him and felt like safety.

When I turned on my side, I found Wyatt still asleep beside me, his dark hair mussed against the pillow, his face relaxed in a way that made him look younger. Even unconscious, his hand reached for me across the space between us, his fingers finding mine and intertwining with a familiarity that made my chest warm. I watched him sleep and felt a calm settle in my chest that I'd never experienced before. This was what peace felt like, this was what it meant to be chosen, to be wanted, to be home.

My old life felt distant now, like something that had happened to someone else. In the days since my transformation, my parents had started treating me differently. Their words had become more careful, their tone softer, as if they were suddenly aware that I was no longer the powerless girl they could abuse without consequence. I was the Alpha's mate now, and that came with a protection and authority they couldn't ignore.

Mom had actually complimented my appearance yesterday, though her praise felt hollow after eighteen years of cruelty. Dad had asked about my wellbeing, his voice uncertain as if he wasn't sure he had the right to show concern now. Even Garrett had been different, no more mocking comments, no more casual cruelty. He'd even asked if I needed anything, his expression almost... concerned.

But I found that I didn't care about any of that anymore. Their changed behavior felt too little, too late. I had Wyatt now, and his love was enough. More than enough. It was everything I'd ever dreamed of and more than I'd ever dared hope for.

"Good morning, beautiful," Wyatt's voice was rough with sleep as his eyes fluttered open, immediately finding mine. The smile that spread across his face was pure sunshine, and I felt my heart flutter the same way it had the first time he'd looked at me with genuine affection.

"Good morning," I replied, letting him pull me closer until I was pressed against his chest, skin to skin, heart to heart.

He kissed me then, slow and sweet and thorough, and I melted into him the way I always did. Our touches started gentle, almost reverent, but grew more intense as we rediscovered each other in the morning light. We moved together with an ease that came from knowing each other's bodies, from the trust we'd built over these past few days of complete honesty.

It wasn't just about physical need anymore, though that was certainly part of it. It was comfort and connection and the deep, soul-level trust that came from being completely seen and accepted. When he touched me, I felt beautiful. When he looked at me, I felt worthy. When he held me, I felt safe.

Afterward, we lay close together, hearts still beating hard, skin still flushed with warmth. I looked up at the ceiling of our bedroom, then at Wyatt's face, studying the sharp line of his jaw, the way his silver-blue eyes crinkled slightly at the corners when he smiled.

"What are you thinking about?" he asked, his voice still rough from our lovemaking.

"Just... this," I said, gesturing at the space between us, at him, at the life we were building together. "How different everything feels now."

"Different how?"

"Safe," I said simply. "Steady. Chosen." I rested my head on his chest, listening to the strong rhythm of his heartbeat. "For so long, I believed no one would ever love me. Not in the body the curse gave me. Not the real me."

"But I did," he said, his arms tightening around me. "I chose you exactly as you were. Saw you for who you were. And I stayed."

"You did," I agreed, letting myself believe it fully for the first time. Not just intellectually, but deep in my bones, in the places where doubt and fear had lived for so long. "You really did."

The curse was broken. Not just the magical compulsion that had twisted my appearance, but the deeper curse I'd carried in my heart, the belief that I was unworthy of love, that I was too broken to be wanted, that I would always be alone. Wyatt had shattered that curse with his choice, with his declaration, with his unwavering love that had seen past the surface to the person underneath.

"I love you," I whispered against his chest, the words carrying the weight of eighteen years of longing and hope and desperate dreams.

"I love you too," he replied, pressing a kiss to the top of my head. "My brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary mate."

Outside our window, the world was waking up to a new day. Somewhere in the pack territory, people were going about their morning routines, still talking about the dramatic events of the mating ceremony, still adjusting to the reality of their new Luna. There would be challenges ahead, there always were, but we would face them together.

I closed my eyes and let myself sink into the warmth of Wyatt's embrace, into the certainty that this was where I belonged. The curse was broken, the truth was revealed, and my real life, the life I'd always been meant to live, was finally beginning.

For the first time in my existence, I was exactly where I was supposed to be. I was home.
