Chapter 57: The Breaking Point
Chapter 57: The Breaking Point
“Why did you save me?” Alexander’s voice is raw, like it’s being ripped from deep inside him. His eyes are full of rage and hurt, a storm of emotions that he’s been holding back for so long. But now, it’s all spilling out. “Why? If you were just going to betray me in the end.”
Elena stands there, her body rigid with the weight of his words, her heart shattering with every syllable. She can feel the hot sting of tears, but she holds them back. She can’t afford to let him see how much this is tearing her apart.
“I didn’t betray you, Alex,” she says, her voice barely above a whisper. Her throat feels tight, like there’s a lump there she can’t swallow down. She takes a step forward, but the guards move to stop her, their hands on their weapons, ready to take action at the slightest provocation. Elena doesn’t let the fear show. “This is... the only way. It’s the only way I can save you.”
Alexander’s laugh is bitter, a broken sound that cuts through the silence of the room. “Save me?” His eyes flicker with disbelief. “By handing me over to him? By choosing him over me?”
Elena feels like the floor is dropping out from under her. Every word he speaks hits her like a punch to the chest. But she stands tall, even though she feels smaller than she ever has in her life. She can’t tell him the truth—not now, not when everything is so fragile.
“You don’t understand,” she says, struggling to keep the edge of panic from creeping into her voice. “I didn’t have a choice. Rafael... he won’t stop until you’re dead. He’ll kill you if I don’t do this. If I don’t make him think I’m choosing him, that I’m finally giving in...”
“Then you’re just as lost as I thought,” Alexander spits, his eyes blazing with betrayal. He shakes his head, taking a step back. “You should’ve trusted me. You should’ve trusted us. We could’ve escaped together.”
“I do trust you,” Elena pleads, her voice shaking now, the walls she’s built around her emotions starting to crumble. “But Rafael’s not a man who’s easy to outsmart. He’s too dangerous. And I can’t lose you. I can’t.”
She takes a shaky breath, trying to steady her nerves. This is all part of the plan, part of the act. But it feels like she’s losing herself in the process. The line between what she’s pretending to be and who she truly is is blurring.
But Alexander doesn’t see that. He sees only betrayal. His gaze hardens, and he steps back, as though he can’t bear to be near her. He turns his head away, his jaw clenched tight. “Then you made your choice,” he says, voice cold now. “And I’ll make mine.”
Elena feels like she’s suffocating. Her chest tightens, and it becomes hard to breathe. But she knows she can’t let him see how much his words are breaking her. She can’t show him that he’s right—that she is choosing to let him go for the greater good, even though it feels like she’s tearing her own soul in half.
One of the guards steps forward, signaling that it’s time. Elena can’t stop them now. She can’t change this moment.
“Alexander...” She says his name like it’s a prayer, like it’s the last time she’ll ever say it. The thought stabs at her, sharp and cruel. She reaches out to him, but he pulls back, shaking his head.
“Don’t,” he mutters, his voice raw with emotion. “Just... don’t.”
He’s walking away now, and Elena wants to run after him, to scream, to tell him everything. But she can’t. Not yet. She has to keep playing the part. She has to keep the lie going for just a little longer.
As Alexander is pushed out of the room, Elena watches him go, her heart in her throat, the weight of the decision she’s made nearly crushing her. The door slams behind him with a finality that makes her knees buckle. She stumbles, almost losing her balance, but she catches herself. She can’t afford to fall apart now.
The guards leave her standing there, alone in the cold, empty room. For a moment, she just stands there, breathing in the silence, trying to gather her shattered pieces.
“I’ll fix this,” she whispers to herself, the words barely audible, but they’re enough. She has to believe them. She has to believe that somehow, she’ll make things right again.
Her mind races, her heart still pounding in her chest. She can’t let this be the end. She can’t let this be how everything falls apart. There’s still a chance to make things right, to finish what they started.
She just has to find a way.
Elena takes a deep breath, wiping away the tear that had managed to slip down her cheek. She straightens her back, forcing herself to take control again. There’s no room for weakness now. No room for doubts.
She turns, her gaze hardening as she steps toward the door. “I’ll fix this,” she repeats under her breath, her voice more certain this time.
