Darling, You Lose

Chapter 25: The Breaking Point

Chapter 25: The Breaking Point

“You’re mine, Elena. Say it.” Rafael’s voice is low, almost teasing, but there’s an edge to it that makes her skin crawl. He grips her waist tighter, his breath hot against her ear, sending a shiver down her spine. She can feel the tension in his hands, the power he believes he has over her.

Her heart hammers in her chest, and her throat feels tight. She doesn’t want to say it. She doesn’t want to give him that victory, but the way his hands are on her—possessive, controlling—feels suffocating.

“Say it,” he repeats, his voice colder now, the patience slipping away. His fingers dig into her side, and Elena clenches her jaw to stop herself from reacting.

“No,” she whispers, her voice barely audible. She hates herself for the quiver in her voice, but she forces the words out. “I’m not yours, Rafael. Not now, not ever.”

Rafael’s grip tightens, and he pulls her closer until their bodies are pressed together. “You’re lying to yourself,” he murmurs in her ear, his lips brushing her skin. “I own you. You know that.”

She wants to pull away, to break free, but she’s trapped. She’s always been trapped. The walls around her feel like they’re closing in, but she can’t let him see how much he’s getting to her. She can’t show him how scared she is.

“You can’t control me forever,” Elena says, forcing the words out, even though it feels like there’s a lump in her throat. “I won’t let you.”

Rafael chuckles softly, the sound dark and dangerous. “You don’t have a choice, Elena.” He leans in, his lips brushing against her neck, sending another wave of shivers through her. “You’ll say what I want, when I want. You’ll do what I want. You’ll be what I want.”

She grits her teeth, trying to push away the urge to react, to scream, to beg him to let go. But she knows better than that. If she shows weakness, he’ll win. If she lets him see just how much he scares her, he’ll use it against her.

“Don’t touch me,” Elena snaps, her voice sharp, her body stiff in his hold. She knows she’s playing a dangerous game, but she can’t stop herself. He’s pushing her. He’s testing her, like a cat playing with its prey, and Elena isn’t sure how much longer she can take it.

Rafael pulls back slightly, looking at her with an amused smile, his eyes dark with amusement and something else—something cold. He’s enjoying this. He’s enjoying breaking her down piece by piece.

“You think you can fight me?” he asks, his voice thick with mockery. “You think you can win?”

Elena says nothing, but inside, her thoughts are racing. Her heart is pounding in her chest, and she’s so close to losing control. She wants to scream. She wants to throw something at him, anything to make him stop, but she knows she can’t. She has to play along. She has to make him believe she’s still under his control.

For now, at least.

“I won’t let you destroy me,” she says through gritted teeth, forcing the words out even though every part of her wants to crumble under his touch.

Rafael’s grin widens, and for a moment, Elena wonders if he knows exactly what she’s thinking. If he can see through her act, through the cracks in her façade. But then he leans in closer, his lips hovering just inches from her ear.

“Say it,” he repeats, his voice darker now. “Say you’re mine.”

Elena feels the panic rise in her chest, but she forces herself to stay still, to control the trembling in her hands. “I’m not yours,” she says again, this time with more conviction. “I’m not anyone’s.”

For a brief second, she sees a flash of something—anger, frustration, maybe even hurt—pass through his eyes. But it’s gone in an instant, replaced by the cold, calculating look she’s come to know all too well.

Rafael takes a step back, his eyes never leaving hers. “You’ll come around,” he says softly, as though speaking to himself. “Eventually. You always do.”

But Elena knows this is the breaking point. She can feel it. Her patience, her control—everything—is slipping through her fingers. The pressure of his presence, the constant threat of his dominance over her life, is too much to bear.

She’s been pretending for so long, pretending that she could play his game, that she could act like she’s still his. But the truth is, she’s done pretending. She’s done being his puppet.

Without thinking, her hand darts toward the small knife she’s kept hidden in the drawer. She doesn’t know what she plans to do with it, but she feels the cold steel against her palm and knows that this is her only chance. She won’t let him break her. Not again.

Rafael’s eyes flash, and before he can react, Elena pulls the knife from her pocket, holding it in front of her like a shield. Her hands are shaking, but she grips the handle tightly, her breath coming fast and shallow.

“You don’t scare me anymore,” she says, her voice barely a whisper, but it’s firm. “Not anymore.”

Rafael’s expression shifts, his lips curling into a slow, deliberate grin. He doesn’t flinch. He doesn’t back away. Instead, he steps closer, his eyes flickering with something that’s almost... pleased.

“Good,” he says, his voice a low growl. “I like when you fight.”
