Carrying the Lycan Cursed child

chapter 16

chapter 16

POV Kali

After a restless night filled with strange dreams and energy fluctuations, I woke to find Zion already gone for his morning council meetings. The golden elixir had helped stabilize some of the wild swings between exhaustion and supernatural strength, but I could still feel something unusual happening in my body.

My lady's maid arrived with breakfast, but her nervous expression told me something was wrong.

"Your Majesty," she said while helping me wash and dress, "your mother Lady Catherine has arrived at the palace and requests your presence immediately. She seems... quite distressed."

My wolf tensed. Mother's arrival so soon after the confrontation with Kastian meant complications I wasn't ready to face.

The reunion took place in a sunny breakfast room overlooking the gardens. Mother rose gracefully when I entered, but her scent was sharp with worry and barely controlled anger.

"My darling," she said, embracing me, though her touch was stiff. "You look... different. There's something changed about you."

"Mother, why are you here?" I asked as we settled at the small table laden with fresh bread and fruit.

"I've come to bring you home," she said without preamble. Her voice grew urgent. "Kali, you must think practically. Return to Kastian before this situation escalates into full war. This rebellion will completely destroy our family's reputation and standing."

"This isn't a rebellion, Mother. It's—"

"Think of your brother's future," she interrupted, leaning forward earnestly. "Your father's alliances. Everything our family has built over generations could crumble because of this infatuation."

The word stung, but I forced myself to stay calm. "It's not infatuation. Zion is my true mate."

Mother's expression changed to disbelief. "Kali, please. You're a married woman with responsibilities. You can't simply abandon eight years of marriage because a king showed you attention."

I felt a familiar surge of unusual energy, and for a moment, my voice carried more authority than I'd ever possessed. "I'm carrying his child."

The words stopped her cold. Her face went pale, then slowly softened with genuine love and deep worry.

"Oh, my darling," she whispered, reaching across to take my hands. "Are you certain?"

"The royal healer confirmed it yesterday."

Mother's eyes filled with tears as she squeezed my hands. "I love you more than life itself," she said, her voice breaking slightly. "But I beg you to think about the future. Not just yours, but everyone who will suffer if this conflict continues."

"I am thinking about the future," I replied, though the energy surge was already fading, leaving me feeling drained. "Mine and my child's."

We spoke for another hour, Mother alternating between maternal love and political desperation. She painted vivid pictures of the chaos Kastian was stirring among the noble houses, the alliances crumbling, the potential for civil war that could tear apart the kingdom.

When she finally left, her parting words echoed with resigned worry: "I pray you know what you're doing, my daughter. The cost of this choice may be higher than you imagine."

Feeling emotionally and physically exhausted from the morning's confrontation, I made my way to the harem quarters for the midday meal. But the moment I entered the common room, I could smell the anticipation in the air. Vivienne and her followers were clearly waiting for me.

"Well, well," Vivienne said loudly as I took my seat. "Look who's finally graced us with her presence. Tell me, dear, how does it feel to know your own mother came begging you to return to your real husband? How embarrassing that must have been."

The other women looked up from their activities, anticipation filling the air. Lady Celeste and Lady Iris flanked Vivienne, clearly prepared for coordinated assault.

"I heard she arrived at dawn, demanding an immediate audience," Celeste added with false sympathy. "Such desperate political maneuvering. Your poor family must be mortified by all this attention."

"Of course, we all understand the pressure you must be under," Iris chimed in. "Torn between family loyalty and... whatever this situation is."

My wolf pulled back under their verbal attack, and the exhaustion from my earlier energy surge made it harder to maintain my composure. I forced myself to stand straight, though I could feel their triumph as they sensed my weakness.

"Nothing to say?" Vivienne pressed, circling me slowly. "No defense of your family's honor? No explanation for why you're tearing the kingdom apart for your own selfish desires?"

For the first time since arriving at the palace, I felt like the old Kali again. Uncertain, tired, overwhelmed by forces beyond my control. The pregnancy was making the energy fluctuations worse, and I could barely keep up with their rapid-fire attacks.

"How noble," Vivienne continued when I didn't respond. "Playing the dignified victim. But we all know what you really are. A desperate woman who'll destroy anything to avoid admitting she's a failure."

I endured the assault with stoic dignity, keeping my expression calm while my wolf cowered inside. But when Lady Serena tried to intervene, even she seemed less certain than before.

"Perhaps we should let her rest," Serena said quietly. "She looks unwell."

"Yes," Vivienne agreed with false concern. "All that political stress can't be good for... whatever condition she thinks she's in."

The implication was clear. They suspected my pregnancy but didn't believe it was real or lasting. Their doubt added another layer of uncertainty to my already fragile state.

When they finally grew bored with my lack of response, I retreated to my chambers without giving them the reaction they craved. But their words echoed in my mind, mixing with my mother's warnings and the healer's concerns about the unusual nature of my pregnancy.

That evening, I joined Zion for dinner in his private dining room. He sensed my emotional turmoil the moment I entered, his scent immediately shifting to protective concern.

"How was your day?" he asked gently, though I could tell he already suspected it hadn't been easy.

"Difficult," I admitted, not wanting to burden him but needing his comfort. "My mother's visit was... challenging."

His expression grew troubled as he set down his wine glass. "I heard about her arrival. I'm sorry I couldn't be there to support you."

"She's terrified about the political consequences," I said quietly. "She painted a very dark picture of what Kastian is stirring up among the noble houses."

"Intelligence reports confirm that he's been busy," Zion replied grimly. "This is no longer just a personal dispute. It's becoming a political movement that could threaten the stability of the entire kingdom."

All of it overwhelmed me at once. The prophecy questions, my mother's tears, the harem's attacks, and now the growing threat of civil war. My wolf pressed low with anxiety, and I felt another wave of that strange exhaustion washing over me.

"This is all happening because of me," I whispered. "If I hadn't chosen you—"

"No," Zion said firmly, reaching across to take my hands. "If you hadn't chosen me, I would have died within the year. Whatever we face, we face it together."

I felt his fierce love and determination, but I also sensed something else in his scent. A growing desperation that he was trying to hide from me. As if he too was beginning to understand that our happiness had set forces in motion that none of us could control.
