HOW SURPRISING
HOW SURPRISING
Antonio was silent for a while, then he blinked and met her eyes filled with anticipation and expectation. “Nothing happened okay, it's a choice I made and that's it”. Angela sighed deeply. “I truly wish you could be more open to me” she said slowly, looking down nervously about how he would react to her request. “Something must have happened, Antonio, and I care about you…I really do, just tell me please, I will understand”. "You don't need to understand because there's nothing”. He smiled at her and the next second, his face went back to cold, he was definitely trying hard not to get mad at her for asking those questions. His face was actually sad and hurt. She felt he was not as perfect as she had thought, maybe his appearance is but undoubtedly not his life, that reminded her of how he randomly broke down in tears the night he was drunk and even last night. Why is he punishing himself? Something must have happened. Why is he being so secretive about it? She took a quick glance at Antonio and cleared her throat. “You said last night that you wanted to die, you wanted me to take your life yet you say it's nothing?” She spoke softly. “Forget what I said”. Angela looked up her eyes clouded with tears. “Well, I am sorry, Mr. Antonio. I can't do that! I am worried for your sake!” She snapped out. Antonio was silent and he didn't look up. “Why does your grandma want you to marry before she dies, is she aware of this decision?” Her voice was so soft that it made him think she would tear up any minute, which made him take a quick glance at her and look away again. “No, she wanted me to get married for some other reasons known to her”. A flashback of himself as a 6 years old terrified in a woman's arms flashed before his eyes. The woman's smile and the blonde long hair beautifully braided into a french twist, then her kiss on his lips. He stared down at the floor. “You are the first person I have discussed this with apart from Grandma”. Angela felt chills all over her, if not for anything, the deepness of his voice making that last statement, it felt human and kind, it was different from his usual. Then he suddenly laughed out loud. "I should probably stop initiating conversations with you, I think one day I will open myself up to you without even realizing it, you've made me an open book Angela you might as well take my life now, I will be grateful”. “Stop talking nonsense”. Angela scolded. “I am serious, we can have a great fuvk tonight, then all you need to do is take the gun and pull the…” He stopped seeing her in tears. “Stop with the joke…okay…I don't want to lose anyone else, my mom is gone…and she kept talking about her death like you…I…don't want to lose you…I can't hurt you…stop with the jokes it's not funny!” She turned around hiding her face. Antonio stood up and walked to her. “I am sorry I scared you with that..(scoff) I never thought I would be missed by anyone”. Antonio said with a shrug, and took out a cigar to light. “What do you mean… Grandma and your siblings will miss you”. Angela turned to look at him. Antonio stole a glance at her then looked up. “Grandma will probably die from heart attack so she will be missed too, and I don't have siblings”. Angela's eyes widened. “Of Course you do…Damon…” She paused abruptly seeing his eyes changed to a cold one after she mentioned that name. She wondered about the origin of their grudge. “I was the only one born by my mother”. Antonio cuts into her thoughts as though he heard her mind. “Oh… I see”. Angela said absentmindedly. She looked down wondering about the relationship between the Montero children, are they even related by blood? Suddenly, she felt cold chills when his hand touched the soft spot on her cheeks, then he used his thumb to dry her tears. She watched his smokey eyes, then down to her full lips and remembered how wonderful his mouth had felt on her lips. Suddenly, she was aching to feel him again. Hug him tightly and comfort him. If only he could let her. Angela threw her hands around him. Antonio rolled his eyes. “Really? A hug?” Angela smiled. “It's warm and good for the heart, I think you need it”. Antonio sighed and reluctantly wrapped his arms around her. Noticing that Angela opened her eyes, her cheeks flushed. Suddenly Antonio groaned. “Fuck, my head aches”. Angela pulled out of the hug and looked at him a bit worried. “Are you okay? You look exhausted” she asked. “Remind me not to have kids, especially twins” he murmured with a hand placed on his forehead. Angela shook her head and grinned at him. “So you don’t want kids, huh?” “That’s what I just said, Kids are exhausting. I’m literally burned out” Antonio maintained his stand. “But you did so well with the twins, and they are fond of you”. Antonio dropped on the couch, his head tilted back, eyes closed. “I was only pretending to be strong…they are so exhausting”. ”Perfect! Now we are ready to do some abstinence to avoid, you know… The fortune-teller’s vision of 12 kids”. Angela declared and folded her hand. Antonio’s eyes widened as the words hit him. “Abstinence? Come on now, you know I was joking when I said I want no kids, I mean kids are cute, Kids are lovely I love kids”. “No sir, we are still going the abstinence” Angela replied. Antonio’s eyes narrowed at the torture. “Is this some kind of torture? Why are you torturing me?” “Come on big guy, it’s just an abstinence, what’s the big deal”. “We can use protection…fuck it, I hate protection”. Antonio cursed. Angela chuckled and walked out of the living room. Antonio stared at her intently as she walked away to the girls room. “Liya! Lia! You two can come out of the room now!” “Are the grown-ups gone?” Lia asked. “Yes”. Angela smiled. “Noisy grown-ups”. Liya added and walked out of the room. Angela shook her head and returned to the kitchen. The girls ran towards Antonio. “I heard Angela talk about engagement, when is the engagement?” Angela closed the kitchen door and laughed out loud. **** Damon sat at his desk in his office, his eyes fixed on the computer screen in front of him. His eyes drifted toward his phone, contemplating about calling Angela. He wondered what progress she had made on this day. Suddenly, the door cracked open. He looked up with a questioning brow, ready to demand explanations from the intruder. “Well, well”. A strange lady said, her voice smooth and seductive. Damon smirked. “How surprising”. “It’s been ages, Damon, how is my little crazy brat?”
