THE DRUNK
THE DRUNK
As she walked down the hall, thoughts raced through her mind. Unsure how to approach Grandma Elizabeth and asked her about Diana. Last time she tried the woman almost gave up the ghost. She reached the giant door to Grandma's room and knocked. The door opened, and Grandma was sitting in her chair, her eyes showing her surprise. She didn't expect to see Angela in her room. "Angela," she said, her voice soft and worried. "What's wrong?" “Nothing..I just want to talk to you,Grandma." Grandma Elizabeth smiled. “Come, have a seat”. She tapped on the soft spot beside her. Angela smiled back and walked to her, she sat down awkwardly. “Before you go on and say anything,I want to apologize for the last time…my son Antonio..he..he…can be very difficult and when I look back at the good times..it hurts so much…the poor kid is trapped and hurting people that mean so much to him”. Angela wasn't sure about all she said, but it looks like Mama Elizabeth is blaming Antonio's trauma for his reckless and dirty behaviour. “Good old times?” Angela asked softly. Grandma Elizabeth smiled. “The time I first held him in my arms,as my first grandchild. He was so adorable and his smile was a healer to my dying heart”. Did she say first Grandchild? How can he be the first while Damon is three years older than Antonio? Could it be the hate she has for Damon and his siblings? Could it be because Antonio is her favourite? “He was a very nice and lovely kid growing up, the maid servant's favourite”. That caught her attention only then did she realize that Grandma Elizabeth was talking all this while. “Maidservant's favourite?” “Yes”. Mama Elizabeth laughed. “He is a very happy and lively boy, he can give his candy to any maid he sees, his mother and father weren't so pleased that he was interacting with common maids. However they can't change the fact that he was just a pure soul who sees humanity in every one. Omne imitated the bow from his parent's bodyguard, which made everyone burst into laughter including that particular guard he bowed to”. “That is definitely not the Antonio I know”. “Well trust me he was..your Antonio”. “I guess he was a kid then..clueless about the world powerm.and he grew up into narcissist and a proud misogynist”. Grandma Elizabeth smiled lightly but said nothing. Angela cursed inside she went all out,how can she say that in front of Grandma and this man is her fiancé. After a few minutes of intense silence between the two. “Growing up can change people I suppose”. “Grandma, can I ask you a question?” “Well,of course, whatever you wish to know, you can always ask,you are like a part of this family you know..”. Angela smiled at that reply then with a serious expression on her face, she took a deep breath, trying to clear her mind. “Seems like a big deal, you need to make up your mind, huh?” Grandma teased seeing how tense she is. That made her a little bit comfortable, and she giggled. “Actually I wanted to know what Antonio is like..like genuinely love..he is a closed book when it comes to things like that," she said, her voice shaking. "I need to know how I can help him be that lovely and sweet personality that he was before." Angela nodded, feeling a sense of trepidation. She knew that talking to Grandma would be difficult, but she also knew that it was the only way to get the answers she needed. “I am touched by our request Angela, I was afraid that you will never have that patience but I must warn you…it's not so easy to deal with Antonio. At the age of 11 we hired a therapist,it wasn't helping..at 18 he chose to have self as his personal therapy…he never opened up to even the therapist about his struggles he just found his own stuff and according to him, he only feels better after a good sex, many of his sexual partners went into coma..and that scared me. Although I don't think he would intentionally hurt someone," she said, her voice thoughtful. "But I think he's capable of doing things that could hurt someone, without meaning to. He's impulsive, and he sometimes doesn't think things through. So while I don't think he would intentionally hurt someone. I am not trying to justify his actions. I just wish I knew how to help him but I don't,so I decided to force him to get married…it's not a very good idea I can see”. She drew a deep breath. Just then the door cracked open loudly, it attracted the attention of the two. Antonio was standing there in the doorway, watching the scene before him with a suspicious glint in his eyes. “What the hell are you discussing about, Freckles?!” He folded his hands and raised a brow. “Why don't you join us,Antonio!” His Grandmother replied. Angela didn't suspect anything, but rather thought he was just being the regular jerk by calling her that. Until he started staggering towards them. “I think he is drunk”. Grandma Elizabeth whispered. Antonio walked straight to his grandma giving her a big hug. “I missules you so much Mama”. Grandma Elizabeth smiled, tears clouded in her eyes. “I missules you too, my baby Antonio ''. She imitated his drunk pronunciation. Grandma turned to look at Angela, a smile on her face. “I haven't seen Antonio like this in a long time," she said, her voice soft. "I've missed seeing him so happy. I know he's been through a lot, even if it's just for a little while,I love this druno side of his than the furious one." "It's not healthy for him to be like this, drinking.. getting high every time,he should just get a therapist instead" Angela replied. “Well that's only if he is not Antonio”. Grandma Elizabeth replied. Antonio sat down on the floor beside his grandmother and looked up, his eyes bleary. “Freckles!" he exclaimed, a wide grin on his face. "I was just talking to Diana about you!" He tried to stand up, but he stumbled, falling back down to the floor. “Easy, don't hurt yourself”. His grandmother cautioned. "We were talking about why I need to get rid of you," he continued, his words slurring together. Angela and his Grandmother exchanged awkward glances. "You know what the best part is?" Antonio continued. Angela wasn't sure she wanted to know, but she couldn't help but be curious. "What's the best part?" she asked, her voice cautious. "The best part is," Antonio said, "The best part is, it's not even real." Antonio laughed, the sound loud and grating. "It's all a game, a little charade for the old lady. You're not really my girlfriend, and I'm not really your boyfriend, it's a fake engagement!” Angela's heart was skipping like crazy, how will she ever defend herself. Will Grandma Elizabeth question that statement of his or will she just think them to be a drunk man's words. She has to say something at least! "Isn't that funny, Diana?" He looked around. “Man where did she go?’ He said sadly his shoulder sagged. Grandma Elizabeth gave Angela a questioning gaze. “What do you mean it's not even real? I don't know what the hell he is saying!” She laughed awkwardly. She rushed over to Antonio, grabbing his arm and trying to pull him to his feet. “Are you saying you never loved me for real? Come on," she said, her voice firm. “We need to talk about this." Grandma Elizabeth watched in silent. Antonio tried to stand, but his legs were unsteady. He wobbled and nearly fell, but Angela managed to keep him upright. She led him out of the room, her arm around his waist, supporting his weight which is very heavy for her and his height was making things even more difficult. “Help me”. She called the attention of a male servant.
