On The Border - Marry Him Or Die

Lucas’s POV

Why was she asking about this?

Shouldn’t she know how Zade got involved with us?

Didn’t she know that she started all this? That it was all to get her across the border safely and secretly from Zade’s other enemies?

Was she playing me again? Acting like she doesn’t know anything just to show her false innocence?

“But you know what he did to my family already, don’t you?” I asked her coldly.

She cast her eyes down before she said tightly “The men I was with….they said… he killed your father, brother, and his wife. But I don’t know why he did any of that”

I scrutinized her face while she continued to keep her eyes down at the snow.

I couldn’t tell if she was being honest or not and it bothered me.

But still, I decided to play dumb and go along with her.

“At first, he wanted to strike a deal with my father. But when my father learned what kind of product he wants to ship through our borders, he told him to take another way that is far away from our town” I said firmly.

She looked at me and asked interestingly “What kind of product did he want to smuggle?”

I looked at her dumbfounded and asked incredulously “You seriously don’t know anything about Zade and what he does?”

She pursed her lips as she said dryly “Would you believe me if I said no?”

“Probably not” I said right away, which caused her to roll her eyes at me and go back to staring straight ahead.

“Are you going to tell me the whole story or wait until I explode from curiosity?” she asked me irritably after I deliberately stayed quiet just to see what she was going to do.

I smiled, pissing the hell out of her was becoming easily my favorite game.

My smile slipped as I started to tell her the rest of the story.

Zade’s insistence on my old man to take his deal, the threats he issued to him, his murder on the day of my brother’s wedding, the blood feud that followed after between the clans, Alex’s arranged marriage, my uncle’s betrayal, his words to us before he died about this being more than just a drug deal, Jenny’s abduction a few weeks later, how one of his assholes was able to hide in one of our cars after we rescued her, then the shoot out that raided our house the very same night resulting in my brother and his wife’s deaths.

I told her all of it but kept my emotions from affecting me as I focused solely on her reaction.

And I could tell from the horrific look on her face that she was utterly clueless to all of this.

I finished the story and was surprised that she remained very quiet the rest of the way home.

She was probably just trying to digest everything I told her all at once.

It was really a lot to take in if you haven’t lived the story from beginning to end like I did.

When we crossed the iron gate and were about to cross the front yard, that’s when she called me in an emotional voice “Lucas, wait”

I turned to face her and saw her struggle with what she wanted to say to me “I’m very sorry for your losses. I…you might not believe this but, I’m truly sorry this happened to you”

I believe it actually. I can see it written all over her face, her genuine sadness for what my family has been through. I don’t think she’s really sad for me, considering how much she hates me, but she’s probably sad for mom the most.

I said firmly, not acknowledging her apology in the slightest, even though deep down I was really touched by her sadness for us and what we’ve been through the past two months, but I didn’t want her to see that she could have any effect on me “I don’t need your damn apology Merida. You know damn well what I truly need, but you don’t wanna give it to me. So I guess I’m going to find another way to get my revenge”

Her eyes flashed with something I couldn’t identify before they looked away and the look disappeared.

“I can’t give you anything Lucas, because I have nothing to give. I had nothing to do with what happened” she said tightly as she looked back at me with anger.

I lost my temper on her and lost my grip on my tongue as I sneered “You had everything to do with what fucking happened! It all happened to get you across the border, to smuggle you through our town without anyone knowing. That’s what my uncle meant before he died, he was talking about you. So tell me, what the hell is so important about you that Zade would do anything to get his hands on you?”

Her eyes widened and a soft gasp escaped her both at my aggressive tone and my revealing words.

Dammit Lucas! You fucking idiot! You should have kept your mouth shut and just waited to talk to her father!

Her tears flowed and dropped down her face while her lips trembled, then she sprinted towards the front door, knocking on it twice before Sara opened it.

I saw her turn left to the direction of the staircase before she disappeared from my view, probably going to lock herself in her room.

“Great, now my mom is definitely going to smite me down for this” I said dryly as I walked towards the still open front door.

Sara was shaking her head at me in a knowing look.

“You should just go and tell your mom instead of her finding about it later” she suggested as she closed the door shut behind me.

“As if that will help” I scoffed as I walked past her towards the kitchen where I knew she would be, as lunch was almost in an hour.

She was standing over a pot that was sizzling on the stove, mixing it in concentration.

I smelled the sweet smell of chicken fajita.

She turned her head and saw me come in.

I guess the look alone on my face was enough to convey what I was here for, as I saw her face change drastically.

“How badly did you screw up this time?” she asked in disappointment.

I scratched the back of my head trying to determine that answer for my damn self first.

“Well, I’d go ahead and say he screwed up royally considering the girl passed by me and flew upstairs with streaming tears down her face and barely contained sobs” Sara said firmly as she entered the kitchen behind me.

Thanks a lot for the help, Sara!

My mom fixed me with a very angry glare that seriously had me fearing for my life.

I jumped to my own defense, since no one was going to step up and do it “I didn’t say anything hurtful. She asked me why Zade and I have a beef with each other and I told her the whole story right down to her being the reason this whole thing began in the first place. She took it more roughly than I anticipated. I couldn’t see that one coming”

She narrowed her eyes at me and asked tightly “So you practically tell her that she is the reason for all our tragedies and you think that you didn’t say anything hurtful? You damn near destroyed her with guilt!”

She blows past me huffing and cursing to herself.

I look at Sara who took over from my mother as she stood in front of the stove.

“Thanks a lot for the back up, Sara” I said sarcastically.

She turned her head towards me and said satisfyingly “Anytime Lucas. I’m always here for you”

I roll my eyes and turn around to follow behind my mother.

I knew she was definitely going upstairs to check on her and I wanted to go check on her myself.

My mom was right, I just fucking blamed her for everything even though she was not the one to blame here.

I fucking lost my head, and it just cost me more losing points with my stubborn Merida.

She definitely hates me to the core now and will never agree to talk to me ever again.
