Lucas’s POV
I mean she was scared from the start, but she was trying to hide it, manage it, but after the stupid stunt I just pulled, her fear of me reached a whole new level, and it caused my crazy heart to break into a million pieces.
Her eyes were shut close and her lips were trembling as she continued to whimper involuntarily, waiting for me to begin hurting her, I had no doubt it. That was all that was on her mind as she felt me approaching her, standing in front of her.
Those soft little whimpers that were filled with dread made my skin crawl with disgust at myself.
I shouldn’t have made her watch this.
I should have taken her away first.
Stupid Lucas!
Stupid asshole Lucas!
No amount of words can ever erase that fear now. No amount of softness or gentleness from me can make her believe that I wouldn’t dare to harm a hair on her head.
I have no idea what the assholes told her about me, and it was very clear that they did mention me judging by how scared she was to even open her mouth to talk to me from the start, I just confirmed all her doubts about me. I could never be trusted. She’s never going confide in me or tell me how she ended up in this car and the reason she was being taken to Zade.
But that doesn’t mean that I won’t try to gain that trust back; well it was never there to begin with but at least she had doubts about me, unlike how confirmed those doubts turned out to be now after seeing me go full on psychopath on her captors.
I decided to give myself and her a little time to gather ourselves before speaking to each other again.
As soon as I spoke up, she flinched instinctively and that caused my soul to hurt “David, take Hope back to our warehouse and put her in my office until I finish here”
I watched her eyes open and look up at me in what could only be described as pure raw fear of what I might have in store for her there.
I couldn’t hold my tongue as I spoke kindly to her even though I was sure that my words will not lessen that fear I saw by an inch but I still tried to erase it nonetheless “You have nothing to be scared of Hope. No one is going to lay a hand on you. We’re going to talk about everything and I’m going to help you with whatever got you into this mess, I promise”
And I was right, her expression didn’t change at all, if it was even possible, I think my soothing did more harm than good as her breath hitched and her tears started falling again.
David approached her, carefully and slowly helped her to stand up, and started taking her towards one of the SUVs.
He helped her up into the backseat, then went to the front as he rode with Dean and drove away with her.
I ran my hands through my hair in frustration as Mathew walked over to me with unsaid blame in his expression.
“I know! Don’t say it!” I warned him before he opened his mouth.
He raised his hands and said steadily “It’s good that you know, because I would have respectfully smacked you in the back of the head if you didn’t”
“Why didn’t you say anything before it went too far?” I asked in agitation.
“You’re the boss Lucas” he said simply.
I gritted my teeth at him and snarled “I never wanted to be the boss Mathew and you know that. Next time speak up and stop me, it’s an order”
“You got it” he said softly.
“Search the car, break it apart into tiny pieces if you have to, but find me something useful I can work with, and search those assholes to see what they were carrying in their pockets. I need some god damn answers before I try speaking to her again” I said strictly.
“Are you sure you’re the best one to talk to her Lucas? After everything? Maybe you should let David handle her, she seemed less scared of him especially since he’s the one who was paying attention to her, she might feel safer talking to him than you” he suggested firmly.
I fixed him with an intense glare as I felt something odd course through me, something dark and possessive like, as I addressed him curtly “No one talks to her but me. If she will confide in someone, it will be me and no one else. I will get her talking to me don’t worry. Just do as your told”
He nodded his head, and I detected a slight amusement hidden there but he turned and walked away before I had time to make sure of it.
Ten minutes later, I had more clues than I could have wished for. Even though all I had were small little unsolved riddles, but I loved a game of mystery and what I loved more than anything, was following and solving those little riddles to get my big reveal.
The car search revealed three ferry tickets from Seattle to Alaska booked two days ago.
The names on the tickets were obviously faked for the girl’s name was printed as ‘Sara’.
There was a phone switched off in the compartment box between the front seats.
I opened it but it was locked with a password.
So I asked Mathew to take it to one of the guys who was well known for hacking into any locked phone and I asked him to retrieve any and all incoming calls, messages, or pictures that were ever deleted from it.
I also found the key to Angelina’s handcuffs inside one of the pockets of the dead driver.
The only piece of real information I had until now was that they were coming from Seattle. Whether Angelina was living there or they were passing through was still unknown.
My guys also found a bottle of a certain drug that puts people to sleep when inhaled, which I concluded was used on her in order to keep her restrained throughout the trip here.
My fist tightened on the small key as I rode in the passenger seat with Matthew driving us back to the warehouse.
“I thought you said the girl’s name was Angelina or something, where did Hope come from?” asked Mathew curiously while driving ahead.
“I don’t know, I saw it on her necklace. It’s either her real name, nickname, or we had the wrong info maybe. But either way, I don’t want you to slip up and mention that name in front of her. Not unless she admits it ok?” I said tightly.
“Sure”
I had a feeling that Angelina was her real name. I don’t know why, but the name suited her so damn much to be fake.
Not that Hope was bad at all, but Angelina was much more suitable for her.
“Can I ask what you’re planning to do with her?” he asked me carefully.
“Are you insinuating something Mathew?” I asked him coldly.
He answered sincerely “Of course not Lucas. I know who you are and how well you were raised, it would never cross my mind that you have bad intentions for her. What I meant was, are you going to keep her here if she insisted on leaving? I mean she didn’t exactly admit that she was kidnapped, but you’d have to be pretty blind not to see that she was lying to you”
“I know, I saw right through her before she even opened her mouth to lie to me” I said dryly.
“Can you really blame her?” he asked in a low voice.
“Honestly no. I know I scared her too damn much with my stupid behavior, but I’ll try to gain her trust and convince her to stay here a little longer. At least buy myself sometime to figure out who she is if she refused to tell me the truth on her own” I said while I rubbed my temple which was starting to throb painfully.
“What if she still insisted on leaving?” he pressed.
“She’s not going anywhere. Not until I find the whole damn truth. Even if I have to lock her up in a room, scare her, or threaten her. She’s the key to ending that bastard and nothing nor no one can make me let her leave this town until that bastard is dead in front of my own eyes” I vowed coldly.
Even though doing that will make her hate me more than she already does, and even though usually I don’t give a fuck what anyone thinks of me, I still didn’t want to look like such a horrible person in her eyes. Ask me why her in particular and I’ll have one answer for you.
I don’t fucking know.
