On The Border - Marry Him Or Die

Alex’s POV

When Sara went to open the door, mom stood up and faced the entrance of the living room, her face blank not betraying a single emotion.

Lucas and I were standing to the side of the room where he couldn’t notice us right away.

I heard his foot steps approaching, saw his side profile as he rushed over to my mom and enveloped her in a hug.

“Diana! I’m at a complete loss of words! I’m still not registering how all this happened!” he said frantically.

Mom stood rigidly, not returning the hug.

When he noticed that, he backed away and inspected her warily.

“Neither are we, frankly” I said icily.

He whirled to face us and I saw the blood drain from his face as it became pale and white as a sheet.

“Alex! Lucas!...... Wait… I’m… confused” he whispered in shock.

“What’s wrong?” I faked concern.

“Mathew called me, he said you were all dead!” he regained his voice and said flatly.

“Yeah, we know. We were there” I said simply.

He looked at me for a while and I knew the instant he figured out that he was played into coming here, and that he was finally caught in his web of lies and deceit, as his eyes hardened and his jaw locked tightly.

I started taking small steps toward him as I addressed him darkly and my eyes glimmered with loath and disdain “Explain to me please, because I tried…. I really tried to understand how…. Exactly were you able to kill your own brother, and how exactly were you able to kill us too. Unless I’m messing something here and you’re not remotely related to us”

I stopped just as I towered over him. He was shorter than my dad, and me.

He stared at me in a hard expression, thankfully dropping his mask and not attempting to fool us again.

“You think this is about family bonds and blood relation? You’re even more of a fool than your father was!” he spit out disgustingly.

Rage blinded me completely and I felt like my next actions weren’t my own as I yanked him by the collars of his white blouse, shoved him against the wall, punched him really hard on his nose that I heard a low crack erupt, and yanked on his collars again as I said to him in a law dangerous voice “The only fool here is you”

Stefan was groaning in pain as dark red blood started trickling down his broken nose, onto his shirt.

“Go ahead, tell me your reasons for wanting us all dead. Is the leadership worth all that blood? All that pain you put us through? Or is it the money?” I snarled in his face.

Stefan spit out in anger “None of that was supposed to happen! If your father agreed to listen to me once in his damn life, we would all be living happily, drowning in money and power! I tried to convince him many times but he refused to even consider it! It was only a matter of time before Lord Z wiped us all of this town and took it as his own! What can I say? I didn’t want to die over your father’s stupid morals! So I made a deal with him, I told him I’d take the leadership after Isaac and smuggle his drugs for him as long as he leaves the Snows in charge! I wasn’t about to lose my ancestors’ hard work in this town because of Isaac’s stubbornness”

“But when your father passed the leadership down to you, that was a move I should have anticipated from Isaac but what can I say? I thought I could trust his blind principals, but as moral as he was, he denied me my right to lead after him using a stupid tradition that he was the only one who could name his successor and screwed me over! I knew you were just like him and there was no point going into the same losing battle of trying to convince you to accept Lord Z’s deal especially after your father was murdered by his man. So I had no other choice but to get you and your brother out of my way”

“How can you talk about killing my family with a straight face Stefan!” my mom screamed at him in fury.

It was the first time I have ever seen or heard her so worked up, but she had every right to be.

Stefan’s confession was adding to all our chagrins. There was no flicker of remorse, no ounce of guilt, pain, or regret. Totally cold and soulless.

He was the complete monster.

My mind couldn’t comprehend how someone can become like that. Especially him who was raised in the same house as my father was, surrounded by the same loving parents and the same loving environment.

How can they be brothers and be the exact opposite of each other?

How can he not care about any of this? Any of us? He didn’t even concern himself with asking about his son yet!

This man has no heart. He was already dead inside.

In response to my mom’s outburst Stefan gave her a cold look and said levelly “Better they die than me Diana”

“Looks like you’ll be the one dying instead of us, who’s the fool now?” said Lucas dryly.

“If I die, don’t think for one second that this will be over. Lord Z will not rest until he kills you. He tends to hold an indefinite grudge against those who defy him and stand in his way. The only way this will end is if you kill him and everyone who runs with him. I can help you do that in exchange of letting me go” he said determinedly.

“You must really take us for idiots who were born yesterday to accept your help or even believe it” I scoffed as I kept my tight grip on his collars.

“I’m afraid you don’t have any other choice. You don’t know anything about him, while I…. I know exactly where he lives, where he goes, and where he does all his business. I have everything on him that can help you end him and his seconds in command. Without me, you are all dead men walking” he said seriously.

I have to give it to him, he was selling his pitch pretty convincingly.

I don’t doubt his truthfulness at all. I’m sure he knows all of these things about the guy and much more probably.

Problem is, he would never betray him to us.

He was just biding his time and trying to save his own pathetic life.

“Let’s say I believe you for one second and let you go. What is to assure me that you will keep your word and hand over all your information instead of seeking his protection again?” I asked with a calculative look.

“When he finds out that you’re still alive, that I went to you, and you just let me go back with a beating heart, he’ll know that I decided to betray him. He will dispose of me on the spot. I have all the information you need somewhere safe. It’s not in my home in Yukon, it’s in a location no one knows about but me. I will hand you the information and disappear from all of Canada and America. You won’t ever see my face again” he reasoned.

“What about your son’s face? I notice you never bothered to ask about him or make sure if he was dead or alive after he ratted you out to us this morning? I mean is he even your son? Because I’m seriously starting to doubt that, judging by the lack of sympathy” said Lucas in a surprising considerate manner.

I knew then, that deep inside, Lucas felt bad for David. His father obviously never cared for him, not even when he was living with him back in Yukon. His head was manipulated with easily I’m guessing by his father’s sudden interest in making him his friend and giving him the attention he never received from him before.

Somehow, I understood the kid’s actions and change of heart.

He understood the true meaning of family when he stayed here with us.

But does that mean that he can easily be forgiven for everything that happened before he grew a conscience and started to deeply care about us? That I still haven’t decided yet.

“He’s the one who told you everything?” he asked in a shade of anger.

Lucas lost his temper as he screamed at him “Is that all you care about you sick heartless bastard? No fucking wonder he ratted you out, you’re a selfish asshole!”

Stefan was about to respond to him when I cut him off by speaking strictly “Don’t waste your breath Lucas, he’s already dead inside, and after a little trip to the cemetery, he'll be dead on the outside as well”
