Alex’s POV
I have to admit, I was in a pretty shitty and dark mode. But the moment I was left alone with Jenny, I felt a little lighter and less off balance.
She brought joy inside me whenever I talked to her.
Whether she is being serious, emotional, angry, shy, even when she is being brutally honest and mean she still manages to change my mood instantly.
She was very intriguing to me, and I never wanted to miss a chance to tease her, talk to her, listen to her, and hear her funny and witty retorts she always directs at me.
This time she was left speechless though.
She got caught in a lie and she was too innocent to covert it up or deny it again. It brought a wave of adoration inside me.
She was up late waiting for me. It made me happy and excited that she was thinking about me, worried even.
Who would have thought the girl who hated my guts a few days ago, was now worried about me?
Our feelings for each other were developing faster than either of us was expecting, faster than normal probably, it was surreal but true at the same time.
We were drawn to each other like a magnet. Even when we hated each other, we were drawn then, or at least I was.
There was a certain attraction drawing us closer that neither of us could deny anymore.
But she was fighting it harder than me.
I don’t know why.
I have no idea what she was trying to convince herself with to stop feeling this thing growing between us. To keep denying it.
Why was she doing that? Why didn’t she want to accept it or live it?
I really wanted to read her mind and know everything she was thinking about.
A sudden thought developed in my head, and I instantly put it out into words.
“I want to travel to Fairbanks tomorrow morning. How would you like to accompany me?” I asked her gently.
Her eyebrows lifted up so high at my sudden invitation, I couldn’t keep my smile from appearing.
“Why would I want to accompany you?” she asked suspiciously.
“Because I want you to” I said simply.
“But why?” she insisted.
“Because I’m in desperate need of a distraction from staying in this house for the next two days so I need to get away. As for why I would like for you to accompany me, I figured you might want a change of scenery away from this town” I said firmly.
She gazed at me for a long time before saying anything.
“Can we bring April too?” she finally asked steadily.
Her question amused the heck out of me.
She didn’t want to spend any alone time with me, apparently.
“Why do you want her to come?” I asked curiously.
She pursed her lips for a while before saying “Because she might want a change of scenery too”
“Or maybe because you don’t want to stay alone with me” I confronted her directly without beating around the bushes.
She bit her lip and averted her gaze.
“Afraid I might take advantage of you when we’re alone?” I asked tightly.
I couldn’t help but feel offended that she was actually afraid of that happening.
She gazed at me fiercely and said tightly “No, I’m not. I know you wouldn’t do that”
“Then why would you ask for April to come with us if you’re not afraid of me?” I demanded.
This was the first time she seemed hesitant as hell to speak her mind. Although in the past, she had no problem with that at all.
It only intrigued me further to read that complicated mind of hers.
“Talk to me Jenny. Ever since this morning when you clamped up after we kissed, something changed in you” I urged her.
She looked at me determinedly “I clamped up because I realized it was a mistake. We have no business kissing each other. We’ve barely known each other all of six days Alex, what exactly were you thinking when you kissed me? I’m curious”
“I recall you gave me the signal to kiss you, I didn’t force you into it” I said coldly.
“I’m not saying you did, I’m asking what were you thinking when you did it?” she asked fiercely.
“I was thinking that even though we have only known each other for six days, there has been a certain…pull drawing us together that I couldn’t deny anymore. So I acted on it” I admitted openly.
She seemed taken aback by my answer.
She didn’t think I felt something for her when I kissed her?
“Why did you think I did it?” I asked curiously.
“I don’t know, that’s why I asked you about it” she said defensively.
“No, you do know otherwise you wouldn’t have decided to deem it a mistake. I want to know” I said tightly.
“It doesn’t matter. I just wanted you to know that it was a mistake that will not be repeated again. And this pull you just mentioned was nothing more than just that, something brought on by being dragged together into an unusual circumstance and that’s all, a pull I do not want to fester into something more than that. Enjoy your trip to Fairbanks” she said levelly, then without giving me a chance to speak, she got up and went back inside, leaving me completely flustered and confused as hell.
Oh heck no, she does not get to have the final word and leave me like this! Not without explaining why she doesn’t want anything to do with me all of a sudden.
I followed her inside the house and went to my room to find her already laying in bed with her back to me.
Oh no, you can’t get rid of me that easily, little girl.
I went over to her side and sat at the edge of the bed.
She sprang her eyes open wide in shock and backed up against the headboard in surprise.
“What are you doing?” she asked a little shakily.
“I’m picking up the conversation you left undone without explaining to me what your problem is” I said coldly.
She narrowed her eyes at me “I have no problem Alex, what the hell is your problem? Not used to not getting your way all the time?”
I ignored her last biting, offending question and answered her first one intently instead “My problem is, you’re not being openly honest with me like you’re used to. I want to know why you kissed me twice then decided you wanted nothing to do with me in a span of exactly five seconds. What changed then? When went through your head at that time to call it a mistake?”
She pursed her lips “What changed was, I realized I didn’t enjoy it as much as I expected myself to. What changed was, I remembered that what we have between us is nothing more than a marriage on paper only. A fake marriage I was forced into against my will and wanted no part of in the first place. And I don’t want it to become real because I’m not interested in there being more between us. We’re nothing alike Alex, we have nothing in common and we can never agree on anything. How about you honor your original deal with me to have each of us strictly minding our own business? Because that’s exactly what I want”
She was lying….. Right?
I mean I heard and saw how much those kisses made her face brighten and her desire come to life, there is no way I imagined that.
But she said all of this with so much intensity and a straight face, she was either getting good at lying or was actually trying to convince herself along with me.
Why was she pushing me away though?
What is she scared of?
I leaned closer to her with a dark look “Your moan this morning said otherwise…. Jenny, it said you enjoyed it so much, I bet if I had touched your panties, I would have found them soaking wet”
“You smug piece of shit! You don’t talk to me about….. My panties. You’re crossing your line Alex. It happened and now it won’t happen again, let…. It….go!” she scolded me angrily.
I inspected her for a long time and decided to let it go……. For now.
“Ok I will let it go. But we are going to Fairbanks together tomorrow morning. Pack your bag as soon as you wake up, we’ll be leaving after breakfast” I said firmly.
“Who said I’m going? I didn’t agree to it” she said stubbornly.
Yeah, I knew she was going to say that, I was expecting it.
“Good night, Jenny” I said dismissively as I got up from her side and went inside the closet.
She didn’t utter a word, thinking that she got her way, but boy she has another thing coming for her in the morning.
Keep lying to both of us Jenny, keep hiding the real reason behind this sudden personality change, I will make you admit the whole thing on your own by tomorrow.
When we go to Fairbanks together.
