Chapter Three
Chapter Three
The evening air thrummed with energy as the city sprawled beneath the canopy of twinkling lights. Milan pulsed with life—a vibrant tapestry woven from the sounds of laughter, the clinking of glasses, and the distant echo of music spilling from the lavish hall, that was beautiful decorated with flowing fabrics and mood setting candles that were strategically placed throughout, owned by the Bianchi family. The towering pillars loomed above the guests adorned with flowers and layers of thick fabric. It was a fortress of wealth and mystery housing generations of secrets. Inside, the atmosphere crackled with sophistication. Guests clad in exquisite designer attire glided through the grand foyer, the marble floors glistening beneath the soft glow of crystal chandeliers. The air was rich with the scent of expensive perfumes, colognes and gourmet hor d’oeuvres, a sensory delight that enveloped every attendee. A massive mural hung gracefully taking up the length of the wall, its mythical scene depicting Lycans, fierce and proud under a moonlit sky—a reminder of the family’s storied past, shrouded in enigma. Emiliano Bianchi stood in the center of the ballroom; he felt the weight of the evening’s success settle on his shoulders as he took in all the hard work the staff had completed in such a short time. Clad in a tailored navy suit that accentuated his athletic frame, he was the epitome of charisma and allure. His dark hair, tousled just so, framed a chiseled jaw and high cheekbones, his olive skin glowing under the ambient light. Yet beneath this polished exterior lay a restless energy—a man burdened by the expectations of his lineage. It did bothered Emiliano that his father cared more about keeping the family happy rather than making sure the businesses were left in the right hand. Marco was capable but he hadn’t been around the business as long as he had… he didn’t know the ins and outs the way Emiliano did… Marco didn’t even know the names of anyone working under him. He told his father that entertaining this proposal by his brother and his stepmother were just a ploy to buy more time to call a vote, but what did Emiliano know? Who would believe the slighted bastard? As he surveyed the crowd, his thick Italian accent rolled off his tongue like honey. “You look ravishing tonight, Maria,” he complimented a passing socialite, his deep, melodic voice drawing attention like a magnet. The woman blushed, flustered by his gaze, as he flashed a dazzling smile that could melt the iciest hearts. But, amidst the laughter and opulence, a hollow ache lingered within him, a longing for something, or someone… The music swelled, pulling him back to the present as couples twirled gracefully on the dance floor, their movements a mesmerizing display of elegance. His gaze swept over the entire room, taking it all in, impressed by itself perfection. It was then that his eyes landed on her—Fia. She stood at the entrance, a vision in a figure-hugging emerald gown that shimmered under the lights, accentuating her every curve. Her hair cascaded around her in loose waves, rich chestnut hues glinting like polished mahogany. But it was her eyes—sharp, captivating, the color of warm amber—that truly caused his breath to hitch. The sparkled with a blend of confidence and mischief, hinting at a depth that intrigued him from the moment they’d met. As she stepped further into the ballroom, the noise dwindled, and whispers filled the air like soft tendrils of smoke. All eyes turned toward her, an audible gasp rippling through the crowd. The beauty and grace she exuded seemed to draw an invisible line of admiration and envy, every gaze locking onto her as if she were a star born of the night sky. Fia’s entrance was mesmerizing, the soft swish of her gown and the clicking of her heels connecting with the marble floor echoed in the sudden silence. She was a breath of fresh air in a sea of opulence, and her smile—unfazed by the attention—revealed a fierce spirit that both thrilled and terrified man and beast… “Good evening, everyone,” she called out, her voice ringing with warmth, yet laced with nervousness. The crowd seemed to collectively let go of the breath they had all been holding. The moment everyone turned back to their conversations Fia made her way across the marble floor toward him, Emiliano’s heart raced. He could feel the air crackle between their distance, the room blurring around them, and the magnetic pull insisting he close the distance. He remembered the chaotic day they had shared before, how terrified but determined she looked; he remembered how excited she had been about the emerald gown from his family’s boutique. The look of disappointment and heartbreak was written all over her face as she and her friend walked out, but unbeknownst to her, Emiliano had secretly arranged for her to have that very dress sent to her apartment… But tonight, with everyone wearing masks—mysterious, elegant, concealing and provocative—there was an air of intrigue that heightened the atmosphere. The masks varied from ornate designs studded with jewels to simple, elegant pieces that hinted at secrets held close. Fia’s own mask, a delicate creation of lace and shimmering sequins, framed her features, enhancing her allure while shrouding her identity in an intoxicating mystery. Emiliano felt pulse quicken as Fia approached him, a soft glow radiating from her. “Buona sera Fia,” he greeted, his voice low and smooth, echoing with warmth. “You light up this room more than any chandelier.” Her smile was slow and teasing, igniting a fire within him. “And you seem to be the only one not mesmerized by them, Emiliano,” she replied, her tone playfully challenging. “Perhaps I’m just waiting for the right distraction.” “Do you believe in fate,” he mused, “or is it simply good fortune that brought us together tonight? Fia’s eyebrow arched, and the spark of intrigue deepened in her eyes. “Fate can be a tricky thing… but if I’m not mistaken I was invited as your date.” They both laughed. “But sometimes fate brings us what we need, and other times, it leads us down paths we never expected to be on.” Their banter flowed effortlessly, a dance of flirtation and sharp wit, drawing them closer. But just as he leaned in, enchanted by her spirit, a loud crash erupted from the far side of the room, jolting him back to reality. Guests turned in alarm, whispers cascading through the crowd. Emiliano's senses sharpened, recognizing the source of the commotion. It was Viktor Sidorov, barely able to restrain himself at the sight of Fia all dolled up, dancing and smiling with him. The tension radiating from the Sidorov family was palpable, a storm brewing just beneath the surface.
“Are you all right?” Fia asked, her concern genuine, her eyes searching his.
“It’s nothing,” he replied, forcing a smile even as unease churned within him.
“Just the chaos of the evening, I suppose.”
“Maybe we should find somewhere quieter,” she suggested, her voice steady and firm. “A moment to breathe away from all this?” He nodded, grateful for her insight, and guided her through the throng. As they stepped onto the balcony, the cool night air enveloped them, a refreshing contrast to the heat of the party. The city sprawled below, a luminous sea of lights, pulsing like a living organism.
“This view is breathtaking,” Fia breathed, leaning against the railing, her silhouette framed against the skyline. “It’s hard to believe that all that chaos exists just beyond this peaceful moment.” “It is,” Emiliano replied, drawn to her. “But sometimes the chaos hides deeper truths.”
Before Fia could offer a response, a man similar to appearance to Emiliano walked up to him. Emiliano’s expression shifted in an instant as Marco leaned in, his whispered words too low for Fia to hear but potent enough to etch tension into Emiliano’s face. His once relaxed demeanor stiffened, his jaw tightening as his gaze flickered toward his brother.
“Marco,” Emiliano said in a clipped tone, his voice barely masking his irritation. He turned back to Fia, his features softening just enough to offer her a polite smile. “Fia, this is my younger brother, Marco. I need to handle something, but I promise I’ll be right back.”
Fia nodded, though disappointment flickered in her eyes. “Of course. I’ll be here.”
With that, Emiliano cast a lingering glance at her before striding off, leaving Fia and Marco standing together under the soft glow of the chandeliers. An awkward silence stretched between them, broken only by the faint strains of the orchestra.
Marco, ever the opportunist, stepped forward with a charming, albeit practiced, smile. “Miss Fia, would you care for a dance? It seems a shame to leave you standing here alone.”
Fia hesitated, her heart tugging her toward Emiliano. But not wanting to be impolite, she forced a small smile. “I suppose one dance wouldn’t hurt.”
He extended his hand, and she placed hers lightly in his, allowing him to lead her onto the dance floor. As they moved in time with the music, the conversation began as strained small talk—weather, the grandeur of the event—until Marco took it upon himself to steer the conversation toward more personal topics.
“You know,” he said, his tone light but his words cutting, “Emiliano likes to play the gallant hero, but he’s not quite the man he appears to be.”
Fia’s brow furrowed, her guard instantly rising. “And what exactly does that mean?”
Marco smirked, a glint of malice in his eyes. “He’s always been our father’s perfect puppet. Obedient. Calculating. Never one to step out of line. It’s admirable in a way, but also... predictable.”
“Predictable?” Fia repeated, her voice edged with disbelief.
“Oh, yes,” Marco continued, his tone feigning casual indifference. “You deserve better than someone so tightly wound by the chains of family duty. Someone who could offer you freedom, excitement. Someone like me.”
Fia’s movements faltered slightly, her expression cooling. “And what makes you think Emiliano isn’t capable of offering those things?”
Marco chuckled, his laugh low and condescending. “Because he’s too busy trying to live up to a legacy he didn’t even earn. He’s the heir, yes, but I’m the one who’s had to fight for every scrap of respect in this family. I’m the one who can give you more than just appearances. I can give you—”
“That’s enough,” Fia cut in sharply, stepping back to create space between them. Her amber eyes burned with anger, her voice low and resolute. “I’ve heard enough of your bitterness. If this is how you speak of your own flesh and blood, then you’re no good to me—or anyone else, for that matter.”
Her words struck like a hammer, and Marco’s mask of charm slipped, revealing the cracks in his composure. People around them began to take notice, their murmurs adding fuel to the growing tension.
Marco’s jaw clenched, his pride clearly stung. He reached out, his fingers brushing her arm as he tried to salvage the moment. “Fia, wait—”
She stepped back again, her voice firm and unyielding. “No. We’re done here.”
Her defiance only seemed to inflame him further. Desperate to regain control, Marco reached out once more, this time his hand brushing her waist.
The moment his fingers made contact, Fia spun around, her palm connecting with his cheek in a resounding slap that silenced the entire ballroom.
Gasps rippled through the crowd as Marco stumbled back, his hand flying to his reddening cheek, his expression a mix of shock and fury. Fia stood tall, her chin lifted and her eyes blazing with righteous anger.
“Touch me again,” she said, her voice ringing clear and steady, “and I promise you’ll regret it far more than just a slap.”
Marco opened his mouth to retort, but the weight of the onlookers’ stares, combined with the sting of her words and her slap, left him speechless.
As the crowd murmured around them, Fia turned on her heel and strode away, her emerald gown swishing with every determined step. She didn’t stop until she reached the balcony, her chest heaving as she tried to calm her racing heart.
Moments later, she felt a presence behind her. Turning, she saw Emiliano, his dark eyes scanning her face with concern.
“Fia,” he said softly, his voice laced with both worry and regret. “What happened?”
She met his gaze, her voice steady but tinged with fire. “I handled it. But you and I have a lot to talk about, Emiliano. Starting with your brother.”
Emiliano’s mood shifted the moment her words sank in, his earlier concern morphing into a quiet, simmering fury. His jaw clenched, and his hands curled into fists at his sides. “What did he do?” he demanded, his voice low and tight, though his eyes blazed with barely contained rage.
Fia took a steadying breath, her fingers tightening around the cool railing of the balcony. “He asked me to dance,” she began, her voice calm but edged with frustration. “At first, it was polite enough, but then he started… talking. Saying things about you and your father. Awful things.”
Emiliano’s lips thinned as her words tumbled out, his dark brows knitting together.
“I told him to stop,” Fia continued, her amber eyes glinting with fire. “But he just kept going. And then he… he tried to grab me.” She swallowed hard, her anger momentarily giving way to the vulnerability of the memory. “So I slapped him.”
Emiliano’s entire body went rigid. His hands shook with barely contained rage as he muttered, “I’m going to kill him.”
“No,” Fia said quickly, stepping forward and grabbing his arm. “Please, Emiliano, don’t. Don’t leave me alone again. Not tonight.”
Her plea stopped him in his tracks, her voice piercing through the haze of his anger. His gaze softened as he looked at her, taking in the faint quiver in her lip and the resolute defiance in her eyes.
“I can’t just let this go, Fia,” he said, his voice quieter now but still laced with steel. “He crossed a line.”
“I know,” she replied, her voice steady but pleading. “And I’ll never forgive him for it. But right now, I don’t care about him. I care about you. I need you here—with me.”
Her words struck something deep inside him, anchoring him to the moment. Slowly, Emiliano unclenched his fists, though his jaw remained tight with the effort of restraining himself.
“I won’t leave you,” he said after a tense beat, his tone soft but resolute. He reached for her hand, his touch firm but comforting. “Not tonight. Not ever.”
Fia exhaled, relief washing over her as she nodded. “Thank you.”
He gently pulled her closer, his hand brushing her cheek as he studied her face. “Are you all right? Did he hurt you?”
“No,” she assured him, her voice warm despite the tension still lingering between them. “I handled it. But you should’ve seen the look on his face when I slapped him. That’s a memory I’ll treasure forever.”
A faint smile tugged at Emiliano’s lips, the humor in her words easing some of his anger. He rested his forehead against hers for a moment, letting their shared presence ground him. “You’re incredible, you know that?”
She smiled softly, her hands resting on his chest. “And you’re trouble, but I suppose I like that about you.”
The two of them stood there for a moment, the party continuing in the background like a distant hum. Emiliano knew this wasn’t over—not with Marco—but for now, he would stay by Fia’s side. Nothing else mattered.
