Chapter 62
Chapter 62
Serena
As I opened my eyes, Damon sleeping peacefully beside me. The room was dimly lit, and I could feel the weight of worry hanging in the air. Alexei and Ashford were nearby, their expressions a mix of relief and concern as they smiled upon seeing me open my eyes. I tried to shake off the grogginess as a sharp pain throbbed in my temple, struggling to piece together the events of the previous night that led me to this room.
Damon stirred from his sleep, and his eyes widened with relief as he noticed me awake. A broad smile spread across his face.
"Serena? Thank goodness you're awake!" he exclaimed, his happiness evident. He reached for my hands, holding them gently, and planted a gentle kiss on them, as if reassuring himself that I was truly okay. His touch felt nice and made me feel a bit better. His smile showed he was happy to see me, but there was also a hint of worry in his eyes.
“W-What happened?” I whispered as I held my head in my hands. Fragments of memories flashed before my eyes. Our camp was attacked last night, and chaos ensued. An intruder barged into our tent, and Alexei and Ashford rushed to my aid, saving me from the assailant. But then, a surge of pain overwhelmed me, and darkness claimed my consciousness, that being the last memory I had before waking up.
Damon's voice cut through the fog in my mind. “Are you okay, my love? What do you want? Do you want something to eat? Are you in pain?”
“I’m okay,” I managed to utter. My mind started gathering detailed memories about what happened last night. I remembered being hit in the stomach by the intruder, making me wince in pain and collapse to the ground. I remembered the bloodstain flowing between my legs and the immense pain I felt right before Alexei and Ashford saved me.
Panic coursed through me as I instinctively held my tummy.
"Is the baby okay?" I asked, my voice barely audible. A heavy silence descended upon the room, each person present carrying the weight of the unspoken truth. I instinctively reached for my belly, a futile attempt to shield the life within. The room seemed to close in on me as the truth unfolded, an unbearable ache settling in my heart.
“Damon?” I asked, my voice shaky, “Is our baby okay?” An air of awkwardness filled the room. Alexei and Ashford bowed their heads while Damon swallowed hard. They suddenly became mute and avoided eye contact with me.
The words I spewed just hung there, making the room feel colder. Nobody said anything, and it felt like we lost something big, something we thought we had but slipped away in the blink of an eye. I tried to wrap my head around what happened, still comprehending where to start accepting the truth unfolding right before my eyes.
Thousands of questions began prowling my mind. I didn’t like their sudden silence. A mild discomfort on my belly was indicating something was definitely wrong.
“I gotta see the camp doctor,” I declared, trying to lift my body onto the bed only to fall back on it once again. I lay there pathetically, waiting for the pain to go away. But above this pain, I was more worried about what happened to my unborn child. Damon approached me.
“Calm down, Serena. You are still weak—”
“How could I calm down if you are not telling me what happened to my child!” I shouted at Damon, who was now a picture of compassion as he stared at me. I struggled to get up, only to be pinned by Ashford while Alexei went outside, probably to call the camp doctor. My heart hammered even faster. With the way they were avoiding my questions, an idea came to my mind.
“What happened to my baby! Tell me what happened to my child. Tell me!” I screamed at the top of my lungs. Ryan, along with another camp member, tried to subdue me while Damon and Ashford were holding my arms. My throat was closing up, the realization hitting me continuously. Tears burned in my sinuses. These weren’t just sad tears. These were tears of anguish from a mother who had lost her child.
Another person entered the room, a nurse and the camp doctor. The nurse raised a syringe and prepared to inject its contents into me.
“Let me go! Get off of me! Take me to my baby! I want to see what had become of my child!”
The lady nurse stepped forward and aimed the needle at my arm. I tried to resist, but with five wolves holding my limbs, how could I? I just flinched as I felt the needle pierce my skin. But it was nothing to the level of pain I was feeling now.
“My baby! Where’s my baby!” I cried like a madwoman as I struggled to accept that my child was gone. Slowly, my eyelids heavy as strength slowly departed from my body. As soon as I calmed down, they removed their hands from me. I could no longer make even a slight movement, but my heart still carried the unimaginable pain.
“Please… Tell me that my baby was okay. Please… I am… begging… you.” I couldn’t bear the fact that my unborn child was already gone. No, I refused to accept that. I didn’t even have an idea of what my baby looked like. It was just so unfair!
“I’m sorry, Serena,” Damon, with tears in his eyes, hummed. My sight began to darken, but I made sure to listen intently to what my husband was about to say. “Our baby is gone.”
“No… it can’t be…You’re lying! My baby is alive! My baby is not dead!” I hoped for a miracle, like maybe what happened last night was just a bad dream. But it wasn't. My dreams of being with my child were broken, and sadness changes things in a way that was hard to fix.
And once more, I fell into the deep abyss of oblivion and emptiness.
