Chapter 55
Chapter 55
Serena
Our wedding preparations happened in a rush, with only a few hours to pull everything together in a quiet forest clearing. Wildflowers, hastily gathered, lined a makeshift aisle leading to an altar crafted from woven branches adorned with whatever blooms we could find. The night rushed upon us, urging us to finish the preparations before darkness settled in.
Roman and his group, wearing simple clothes, quickly helped. Damon, dressed up but showing signs of our lives as banished wolves, stood at the makeshift altar. I wore a dress with leaves and flowers, standing beside him under the stars.
Roman, the venerable leader of the camp who took us, assumed the role of officiant. His eyes bore into ours with a mix of solemnity and warmth.
As he started the ceremony, he raised his hand, capturing everyone's attention.
"Damon and Serena," Roman began, "today we stand beneath the open sky, surrounded by the very essence of nature, to witness the binding of your souls. In the simplicity of this moment, let your commitment echo as strongly as the roots of the ancient trees that bear witness to our gathering."
Damon and I faced each other, hands entwined, as Roman's gravelly voice resonated through the woods.
"Damon," Roman continued, "do you take Serena as your mate, to be your companion through the highs and lows, to share in her joys and stand by her in challenges?"
Damon's voice, clear and unwavering, filled the air, "I do."
"And Serena," Roman turned to me, "do you take Damon as your partner, to be his ally in moments of triumph, to stand by him in times of adversity, and to hold his heart as your own?"
I met Damon's gaze, my response steady, "I do."
Roman nodded, acknowledging our vows, and then turned to Damon.
"Damon, you can now share your vows with Serena," Roman encouraged.
Damon took a deep breath, his eyes never leaving mine. "Serena, from the first moment I saw you, I knew my life was about to change. Today, in the heart of this wild sanctuary, I promise to stand by you in every storm, to celebrate with you in every triumph, and to hold you close in every moment of joy and sorrow. I promise to be your partner in this adventure we call life, for as long as we both shall live."
I felt a warmth spread through me as Damon spoke, and it was my turn to express my vows.
“Damon, starting today, I vow to be by your side always. I'll be your confidante, your partner in mischief, and your unwavering support in everything you do. I promise to treasure the unique person you are and stand by you in all your endeavors. With you, I've found my home, and in your love, I've discovered my anchor. Today and every day after, I choose you as my mate, my love, and my companion.”
Roman raised weathered hands, a symbol of unity with the untamed surroundings.
"By the power vested in me," Roman declared, "not by the laws of packs or institutions, but by the shared experiences and bonds forged in the wild, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may seal your vows with a kiss."
Damon and I kissed by the crackling bonfire, surrounded by the woods. As we pulled away, our new wolf family clapped, their applause echoing through the quiet night. In that moment, surrounded by the authenticity of the wilderness, we began a journey of shared adventures and enduring love.
After the ceremony, Damon and I left the warmth of the bonfire and found a quiet spot under the stars. The air smelled of pine, and there was a simple blanket on the ground.
Damon took my hand, and we lay down together, fingers intertwined. The forest whispered around us, and the bonfire's distant crackle added a soft background to our closeness. Above us, the night sky was full of shimmering stars.
Damon looked at me, his eyes reflecting the beauty above. He smiled and gently kissed me. It wasn't a passionate kiss, but one that connected us, affirming the vows we had made earlier.
"Our first as husband and wife," he whispered with a smile.
I smiled back, feeling the weight of his words. "It feels unreal, doesn't it? Us, here, under the stars."
He nodded, not taking his eyes off mine. "I meant every word of my vows, Serena. I promise to be with you, cherish you in joy, and support you in challenges. This journey is ours to navigate together."
I reassured him by tracing the circles on his hand. "And I meant every word too, Damon. I promise to be with you always, share secrets, and be your partner in everything. Our adventures are just starting, and I can't wait to see where they take us."
Damon pulled me close, his arm around me as we continued looking at the stars. "We're creating our own story, Serena. Us and our tiny bean growing inside you."
I nestled against him, feeling his steady heartbeat. "And I wouldn't want to write it with anyone else but you."
As we lay under the stars, our whispered promises mixed with the rustle of leaves and the soft sounds of the night. The stars twinkled above, seeming to approve of our sincere vows, marking the beginning of our happily ever after that fate had long denied us.
But then, I was overwhelmed with a sudden nervousness. Why do I have a feeling that this was not the end but only the start of our perilous life together?
