Chapter 43
Chapter 43
Serena
The dinner was simple yet comforting – homemade stew with tender meat and vegetables, accompanied by freshly baked bread and a side salad. The stew's mouthwatering aroma filled the room, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. However, my cheeks burned with embarrassment, and I couldn't bring myself to meet Alexei and Ashford's eyes after what had transpired earlier.
As I picked up my food, my fork moved mechanically. I struggled to muster an appetite, my mind drifting back to the passionate encounter with Damon. The vivid memory played on a loop in my mind, the echoes of our lovemaking seeming to reverberate with each clink of the utensils, making it a harsh reminder of my earlier indiscretion. I berated myself for being too wild, too loud, and far too indiscreet.
"What's wrong, Serena? There's nothing to be shy about," Remus exclaimed inside my head. This wasn't the first time my spirit wolf had spoken up, but I couldn't help but feel self-conscious, regardless of the topic of the conversation.
I sensed the knowing glances exchanged between Alexei and Ashford, and I knew they understood what I was feeling. The awkwardness was inescapable.
Ashford finally broke the tension with his gentle and understanding tone. "Serena, having sex for us werewolves is a normal thing," he said with a mischievous glint in his eyes, attempting to lighten the atmosphere with a playful joke. Damon smirked and chuckled lightly in response, while I felt my cheeks deepen in color as I tried to hide my embarrassment behind my wine glass.
Meanwhile, Alexei remained his enigmatic self, not uttering a word and remaining engrossed in his meal. I couldn't read him, but I was grateful for his discretion in not adding to my discomfort.
Desperate to change the subject and escape the lingering awkwardness, I turned to Ashford, grateful for the distraction he provided. "Ashford," I began, my voice still carrying a hint of vulnerability, "What happened to your short trip to the pack house?"
"You guys went to the pack house earlier?" Damon inquired, sounding surprised. "You should have told me so I could have covered for you."
"No need, Alpha Heir, as Ashford covered our backs successfully," Alexei exclaimed. "If only you could have seen how he intimidated those guards, you'd know what kind of Beta Ashford would become someday."
I became curious about their exchange. "What happened?"
"Well," Ashford began to explain, "I told Alexei to keep a low profile, but he was stubborn and insisted on seeing his mate."
"The trouble was worth it," Alexei said, a dreamy look in his eyes. "At least I got to see my mate up close."
Hearing that, I fell silent. I was happy for Alexei, but my joy was mixed with a frown. Knowing that Tori was my sister and her less-than-ideal traits, I couldn't help but think Alexei deserved a kinder, gentler, and more considerate mate.
Damon turned to Ashford. "What did you get from the pack house anyway?"
Ashford, ever the composed and strategic thinker, responded, "Documents."
"Documents about what?" Damon pressed.
"Pieces of evidence," he said as he paused to take a sip of wine, allowing the silence to build. "These papers contain evidence of corruption within the council leaders."
Damon leaned in, his curiosity piqued. "Corruption?" he prodded. "Tell me more."
Ashford cleared his throat and began to outline his plan with a focused, deliberate tone, capturing everyone's attention. "You see, the evidence I've gathered reveals deep-seated corruption within the council leaders," he began. "They've been involved in some shady dealings that could greatly harm our pack if it comes to light."
Damon's features darkened as he listened, his anger brewing beneath the surface. "We should expose them and make them pay for their treachery," he said with a menacing edge to his voice, his protective instincts flaring, and he wanted to take swift action.
But Ashford raised a calming hand, his mind working on a different level. "I understand your anger, Damon," he replied evenly. "But if we expose them right away, we might lose an opportunity to use this knowledge to our advantage. Mathilde is a formidable opponent, and we need allies. I figured that we could use these documents to blackmail the corrupt leaders into fighting on our side in exchange for leniency."
I silently nodded in agreement, understanding the wisdom in Ashford's approach. "Ashford has a point," I chimed in, my voice more composed now.
Damon's anger began to subside as he considered the possibilities. "You're a genius, Ashford," he conceded, begrudgingly acknowledging the value in the plan. "We should use this as leverage, rather than acting rashly. Once we have their cooperation, we can work on a more lasting solution."
My admiration for Ashford deepened as he continued to explain the intricacies of his plan, demonstrating a level of strategic thinking that was truly impressive. His cunning approach had the potential to tip the scales in our favor and build a coalition against Mathilde.
"I'm with you on this," I said with a genuine smile. "Let's use this knowledge wisely, and together, we'll confront Mathilde and her growing influence on the council."
Damon, recognizing the wisdom in Ashford's approach, nodded appreciatively. "Indeed," Damon said, raising his wine glass. "To our plan and the downfall of Mathilde. May we find allies where we least expect them."
But in the middle of our toast, Alexei's question interrupted our conversation.
"What about Tori? What are your plans for her?"
