Chapter 10
Chapter 10
Theodora's private chambers bore no resemblance to the formal grandeur I had come to associate with palace life. Candlelight flickered from dozens of holders scattered across surfaces with artistic carelessness, casting warm shadows that softened every edge.
Books lay abandoned on chairs and tables, their spines cracked with evidence of actual reading rather than decorative display. Rich fabrics in jewel tones draped across furniture, creating an atmosphere of intimate warmth that felt almost rebelliously comfortable.
I perched upon the edge of a velvet settee, my posture rigid with nervous propriety while my pulse hammered against my stays with sufficient force to bruise.
Theodora, by contrast, settled into an adjacent chair with the languid confidence of someone entirely at home in her own skin.
She had changed from her evening attire into a flowing silk robe that caught the candlelight like liquid gold, her dark blonde hair tumbling loose around her shoulders in a manner that would have scandalized every governess in England.
"You appear rather as though you expect me to devour you whole," she observed with evident amusement. "I assure you, my dear creature, I possess considerably more finesse than such crude approaches would suggest."
"I cannot dissemble—I am uncertain what to expect," I managed, my voice emerging smaller than intended. "Your invitation suggested education, yet I find myself struggling to imagine what curriculum you intend to pursue."
Theodora's smile sharpened with something approaching delight. "Direct inquiry—how refreshing. Most young ladies of my acquaintance would dance around such questions for hours before approaching the actual substance."
She leaned forward, her gaze acquiring that particular intensity I had begun to recognize with equal parts anticipation and terror. "Tell me, Beatrice, what precisely did your governess explain regarding the marriage bed?"
Heat flooded my cheeks at the directness of the question. "Miss Hartwell provided instruction regarding a wife's duties and the necessity of submission to one's husband's requirements."
"Submission," Theodora repeated, her tone carrying unmistakable derision. "How delightfully comprehensive. And what of pleasure? What did dear Miss Hartwell explain regarding the sensations a woman might experience during such... submissions?"
The word pleasure struck my ears like something foreign and vaguely threatening. "She indicated that respectable women do not experience such things. That any... sensation beyond dutiful tolerance indicated moral deficiency and corrupt character."
Theodora's laughter rang through the chamber with genuine incredulity, rich and unrestrained in ways that made my chest tighten with confused longing.
"Oh, my darling innocent, what magnificent nonsense they've fed you!"
She rose from her chair with fluid grace, moving to pour wine from a crystal decanter.
"Consider the convenience of such instruction—women taught that their bodies exist solely for male satisfaction, that any pleasure of their own marks them as somehow deficient. Who do you suppose benefits from such arrangements?"
"I had not considered..." I began, then faltered as she pressed a glass into my trembling fingers.
"Of course you hadn't. You weren't meant to consider anything at all—merely to accept and submit and fade quietly into matrimonial invisibility."
Theodora settled beside me on the settee, close enough that I could detect the subtle warmth radiating from her skin.
"Your body, Beatrice, possesses wisdom your governess desperately wished to suppress. Every woman's body does. We are not designed for mere endurance—we are capable of extraordinary sensation, extraordinary pleasure, if only someone bothers to demonstrate the possibilities."
"Such conversation seems rather..." I searched for appropriate terminology and found none that didn't sound ridiculous given my current circumstances. "Unconventional."
"Unconventional," Theodora repeated with evident satisfaction. "Yes, I suppose truth often proves unconventional when lies have been dressed up as propriety for so long."
She set aside her wine and rose, extending her hand toward me with deliberate invitation. "Come. I wish to show you something."
I accepted her hand before rational thought could intervene, allowing her to guide me across the chamber toward a full-length mirror framed in gilded scrollwork.
The reflection that greeted me showed a young woman whose flushed cheeks and wide eyes betrayed every emotion her careful training sought to conceal.
Theodora positioned herself behind me, her presence a tangible warmth against my back, and rested her hands lightly upon my shoulders. The contact sent electricity racing through my nervous system despite layers of fabric separating skin from skin.
"Look at yourself," she instructed, her voice dropping to intimate registers that seemed to resonate through my very bones. "Not with the critical eye your mother taught you—cataloguing flaws, identifying deficiencies. Look at yourself as though you were worth admiring."
"I cannot see what you intend me to observe," I whispered, my gaze skittering away from the mirror's honest assessment.
"You cannot, or you will not?"
Theodora's fingers traced along my collarbone through the thin fabric of my evening gown, the touch featherlight yet impossibly affecting.
"Your body has been carrying you through this world for twenty-three years, yet you've been taught to regard it as something shameful—an inconvenient vessel requiring constant concealment and apology."
"Modesty demands…"
"Modesty demands that you remain ignorant of your own capacity for pleasure, ensuring you enter marriage as a blank canvas upon which your husband may impose whatever preferences suit his convenience."
Her breath warmed my ear as she spoke, and I watched in the mirror as my chest rose and fell with increasing rapidity.
"But you are not blank, Beatrice. You are not empty. You possess desires and sensations that exist entirely independent of any man's requirements."
Her lips brushed the curve of my neck—the barest whisper of contact that sent tremors cascading through my entire being. I gasped despite every instinct toward proper restraint, my eyes fluttering closed as sensation overwhelmed rational thought.
"You see?"
Theodora murmured against my skin, her hands sliding down my arms with deliberate slowness.
"Your body understands what your mind has been forbidden to acknowledge. Every nerve ending awakening to possibility—not because I am doing anything extraordinary, but because you are finally allowing yourself to feel what was always there."
"We should not..." The protest emerged breathless and unconvincing even to my own ears. "Propriety demands..."
"Propriety demands your misery."
Another kiss, this one pressed to the sensitive hollow behind my ear, and my knees threatened to abandon their structural responsibilities entirely.
"Propriety demands you enter your marriage ignorant and afraid, enduring rather than experiencing, submitting rather than participating. Is that truly the future you desire?"
I watched our reflection in the mirror—Theodora's golden beauty pressed against my trembling form, her confident hands exploring territories I had never permitted even my own touch to discover.
The image should have horrified me. Instead, it awakened something fierce and hungry that I had spent twenty-three years pretending did not exist.
"What I desire seems rather irrelevant," I managed, though the words cost considerable effort. "My circumstances permit no alternatives."
"Your circumstances require you to marry Nicholas, yes."
Theodora's fingers traced patterns along my arms that made coherent thought increasingly difficult.
"But nothing in those circumstances demands you remain ignorant of your own body's capabilities. Consider this education, if such framing eases your conscience—preparation for matrimonial duties that might otherwise prove overwhelming."
"Education," I repeated weakly, grasping at the rational justification like a drowning woman clutching driftwood.
"Precisely. Nicholas shall expect certain knowledge from his bride."
Theodora's smile reflected in the mirror carried triumph she made no effort to conceal.
"Allow me to provide instruction that your sadly deficient governess neglected—teach you that intimacy need not be merely endured, that your body deserves attention and pleasure regardless of what convenient lies society has constructed."
She turned me gently to face her directly, her hands cupping my burning cheeks with unexpected tenderness.
"We shall proceed at whatever pace you require," her thumbs tracing my cheekbones with maddening gentleness. "Tonight was merely an introduction—establishing that desire exists within you, however deeply you've been taught to bury it. Future lessons shall explore practical applications of theoretical knowledge."
"Future lessons," I echoed, unable to formulate a more sophisticated response.
"Unless you wish to discontinue?" Her eyebrow arched with challenge. "You are free to leave at any moment and pretend this evening never occurred. Though I suspect you'll find such pretense rather more difficult than anticipated."
She was right, of course. The sensations she had awakened could not be simply forgotten, tucked away like outgrown garments in some mental wardrobe. My body had discovered possibilities it would not easily relinquish.
"I should return to my chambers," I heard myself say, though I made no movement toward the door.
"You should," Theodora agreed, releasing me with obvious reluctance. "Dawn approaches rather faster than propriety appreciates, and servants notice more than we generally credit."
I moved toward the door on legs that felt newly unfamiliar, my entire nervous system recalibrating around sensations I had never previously experienced.
At the threshold, I paused, turning back to find Theodora watching me with an expression that combined satisfaction, hunger, and something almost approaching tenderness.
"Tomorrow evening," she said softly. "Same hour."
I departed without response, knowing with devastating certainty that propriety had abandoned me entirely the moment I first glimpsed forbidden freedom in candlelit shadows.
