# 52 Betrayal

Mr. Blackwood hears the sound of the door shutting in his sleep, he was still very sleepy but managed to open his eyes. His view was blurry, the room dim as the curtains were still closed. He gently tapped the other side of the bed but felt nothing, he turned to his side and she was gone- Anna had already left the room.

He sighs and rubs his face with both palms, thinking back to everything that happened the previous night, they had made love like never before and were both very exhausted afterwards. He thought about the need to keep her to himself, he wanted her, he knew it and even though he was yet to admit it to himself, it was a bitter truth that he would be forced to face sooner or later.

Annabel had just snuck out of Mr. Blackwood’s room with her shoes in her hand, she didn’t want to have any conversations with him today even though she had woken up beside him on the bed. She just had a lot of things on her mind but the most concerning was the case of her best friend’s betrayal- she needed to confront Jenny and since they were hours apart, she would do it the only way she knew how to.

Arriving back at the ladies lodge, she didn’t want to bother Megan who might still be sleeping; it was the early hours of the morning. Anna found her keys in her purse and gently unlocked the door, pushing it open. She walked inside on barefoot but suddenly paused when she heard sounds from the bedroom- so Megan was up after all.

Anna turned her gaze towards the bed and she froze, unable to believe her eyes. It was the moans that first caught her attention, and then she saw them. Megan and Ugochi, making out on the bed, with Megan on top; they were so engrossed that they had no idea that she had walked in.

Anna stood there jaws apart, she couldn’t even find the words. She eventually cleared her throat to announce her arrival, sending the two jumping off each other. Megan looked surprised to see her standing there while her partner was more like scared.

“Oh… hey, you are back.” Megan said with a nervous smile. She immediately turned to Ugochi who climbed down from the bed and then she pointed at the scenario. “This? I can explain.” She added quickly.

Anna sighed and shook her head. “Save it, I saw nothing,” she said with a huff, clearly too stressed to bother about it.

“Great,” Megan said with an awkward chuckle. “What happens in Botswana stays in Botswana.” She said in relief.

Quickly putting on her clothes, “Later,” Ugochi mumbled to Megan and then headed for the door. “Hi,” she shyly said to Anna who replied with a faint "Hi" and smiled lightly.

As they both watched her leave, they turned to face each other. “Phew… That girl is a freak in the sheets.” Megan chuckled and pulled the blanket to cover her nakedness.

Anna sighed and shook her head, she didn’t even want to think about this, she already had a lot on her plate. She headed straight for the wardrobe to find fresh clothes.

Not wanting to make things more awkward than it already was, Megan tried to strike up a discussion immediately. “So… You look exhausted, was it that good?” she asked with a smirk.

Anna laughed softly, “Please not now Megan.”

“Oh… I see, but on a serious note, is everything okay? I got worried when you didn’t come back last night, I tried phoning you but it wasn’t going through, I had Ugochi confirm to me that Mr. Blackwood was back and so I figured out that you must be with him.”

“Yeah, it has been a very stressful night,” Anna muttered as she threw the shoes to a corner of the room.

“You wanna talk about it?”

Anna sighed and waved her head. “No… Not really, but thank you.”

She quickly excused herself and went into the bathroom with her mobile phone, she had an angry call to make. Anna didn’t bother to take her bath first, she just sat on the toilet seat and dialed Jennifer Gilbert, the friend who betrayed her.

Jennifer didn’t take the call at first but Anna was persuasive, she dialed three more times and Jenny finally took the call.

“Girl, it is 2am over here, you just ruined a beautiful bedtime and so it better be worth it.” Jenny chuckled sleepily from the other end.

Anna was not in the mood for such humor and funny talk, she meant business and so went straight to the point. “Were you ever going to tell me?” she queried in a cold tone, trying to keep her voice low and hide her anger.

“Tell you what?” Jenny asked innocently.

“Don’t act like you don’t know what I mean? I thought we were best friends? Why would you do this to me?”

The line froze from the other end, Jennifer went cold as the realization must have dawned on her.

“Don’t go silent on me Jen, I want answers! Why did you do it?” Anna pressured.

“Anna… I can explain, just hear me out.” Jennifer said with fear very audible in her voice.

“What else do I need to hear, Jen? That you were my best friend and yet you went ahead to discuss my personal affair with my boss?”

Jennifer paused and then she muttered a silent “Oh. That?” like a sudden realization had dawned on her.

“Of course, what else would I be talking about? Why would you do that, Jennifer?” Anna queried furiously, filled with the pain of betrayal.

“Okay calm down, first I am sorry if you feel offended, secondly I didn’t think it was a big deal!” Jennifer casually replied.

“Huh? Do you hear yourself right now? What do you mean by that? Just because you knew about it doesn’t mean you had to tell him, and you didn’t even care to let me know of this encounter with my boss, I would never expect such from you, Jenny.” Anna voiced out her frustration

“Babe chill, there is no damage done. Come to think of it, who even found out that your boyfriend was a cheater? Me! I am the one who found out because I was simply looking out for you. I have been looking out for you since day one and that has not changed.”

“No! don’t you dare give me that! Yes, you are the one who found out about Jimmy but that doesn’t give you the right to share that information with my Boss, that is my privacy and you shouldn’t have told him. what do you intend to achieve with that?”

“That was me simply looking out for you!” Jennifer stood on her claims.

“For real? Stop trying to gaslight me, I think I know why you did it. I didn’t know you despised Jimmy that much, you hate my boyfriend so much that you would tell Mr. Blackwood all that? Did you really think Maxwell could convince me to leave Jimmy? I am disappointed in you, Jenny.”

“You know what? You are right babes, I hate that guy! I hate Jimmy, and I do not want him back in your life. everything you just said is right and I won’t deny it, my only mistake is looking out for you.” Jennifer retorted.

The whole thing was heated up and was escalating into a full blown argument, a quarrel that neither of them had seen coming.

“Oh don’t give me that! If you have seen nothing wrong in what you have done then I don’t even know what to say to you! Why exactly do you hate Jimmy so much? Like, I don’t get it! I am the one who got cheated on, not you! Why are you taking it personal?”

“Wow, are you serious right now?” Jennifer cut in quickly, clearly offended by her words.

“Yes, you heard me. You can't even give a reasonable reason why you hate Jimmy. I know you think you are looking out for me but you don’t need to tell me how to live my life and neither does Mr. Blackwood, do you get that?”

“Annabel, take that back, right now!” Jenny demanded in her angry voice.

“Never! And I mean every word of it. There are boundaries that shouldn’t be crossed, you have crossed them all Jen, you have betrayed me!” Anna flamed.

There was silence on the other end for a few seconds and then Jennifer sighed. “You are right, I was wrong to think that it was my duty as a best friend to look out for you, because at the end of the day when things go wrong, it is me who gets to pull you out of that shithole. But as it is right now, I think it would be best for us to part. I am not the kind of best friend you want, Ann, so maybe you should find a new best friend.” her voice shook through the connection and then the beeping sound of the disconnecting call followed.

Anna stood there, jaws apart. She hung up! Did she really call it quits?

There was barely time to process it all as a knock sounded on the bathroom door. “Girl, you aint having a baby there, are you?” Megan’s voice rang through the walls.

Anna opened her mouth to respond but she couldn’t even find the words, however Megan continued. “Anyways, I just received a call from the Boss, Pack your bags, we are going back to New York City Tonight.”

That was another shocker for Ann. They were going back? Why so sudden? What is going on?
