After Divorce: Loved by the Secret Billionaire CEO

Chapter 42 Bodyguards are like robots

Chapter 42 Bodyguards are like robots

Third person's POV

"Are you sure you're okay?" Mark asked Marina again after Ethan and Rachel left. His voice was filled with concern, causing Marina to smile.

"I'm fine, really. That bastard's hand didn't even touch me... thanks to you." She answered with a huge smile.

Mark released her shoulders and clasped his hands behind his back, looking a bit awkward. "By the way, you haven't told me your name."

Marina suddenly remembered. "It's Mark, and I know yours is Marina since your friend introduced you earlier."

"Mark... Mark who?" She inquired, trying to remember if she had heard his name or seen him somewhere before. It would be impossible for a person without a profound, powerful, or well-known surname to be at a party like this.

Mark hesitated before shaking his head. "Just Mark."

Marina frowned. Why was he hiding his last name? Could he be like one of those billionaire's heirs who love keeping their identity a secret? Or could he be hiding from someone? Or was he one of those wannabe men who came to a party this big under a disguise?

Marina paused to look at Mark, who stopped walking as well. He was handsome, with high cheekbones, a well-defined jawline, and beautiful brown eyes. Maybe not as handsome as Ethan, but he looked dashing in his own way. Even his clothes looked expensive. She shook off the last probability, but the other two stuck.

Mark crunched his brows in slight confusion. Marina was looking at him so intensely that a slight blush rushed to his cheeks. "Why are you looking at me like that?"

Marina snapped out of her gaze. "Oh... I was just wondering why you refuse to mention your last name."

Mark pocketed his hands in the front pocket of his pants. "So what did you come up with?"

Mark nodded, and Marina answered, "Well, it's either you're one of those billionaires who choose to remain under the radar, or you're someone who doesn't want to identify with your family... or you were not invited and snuck in."

Mark's eyes danced with amusement. "So... Did I get it?"

Mark asked, "Snuck in? Into a party like this? Do you know how many guards are standing outside the door? How would that even be possible?"

Marina rolled her eyes. She thought the same thing too, but he asked for all her opinions, and she told him. "So that one is cancelled. What about the other two? Was I right in any of them?"

Mark kept silent for a while, watching as she waited eagerly for his response. "Come on, I can't be all wrong." She whined after waiting for almost two minutes.

Mark finally spoke, "The thought didn't even cross your mind that I might be Mr. Ham... Em, Ethan's bodyguard?"

Marina tilted her head to the side and blinked. He was right; why didn't she think of that? Then she looked back at him. Nah... He was too handsome to be a bodyguard. Though he had the type of body for it, he was too free, and one thing she knew was that bodyguards were like robots, stiff.

Mark smiled. "Let me save you the trouble, it's Mark Walker."

Marina blinked again as if she didn't hear what he just said. Mark Walker... That was when it dawned on her. He was the same person she and Rachel saw talking to an old man, Fredrick Walker. So he was his grandson? But she never knew of the Walkers having any living male child; where did he come from?

Mark asked, "Hey... Did you hear me?"

Marina came back to her senses. "Yeah... Just a little surprised to hear you're a Walker. I never knew the old Walker had a grandson."

Mark shrugged. "I like it that way."

He offered her a glass when a butler approached them. "Would you like a glass?"

Marina nodded immediately, needing a drink after the terrifying incident with David. "Thanks." She took the glass and downed it in one gulp, returning the glass to the butler before he left.

She glanced around the party, her eyes slowly taking in everything that was happening. "How do you know Ethan?" She suddenly asked after a few moments of peaceful silence between them.

Mark answered, "Well, I'm his personal assistant and best friend."

She turned to look at him. "How long have you known him? I know this might seem too personal for a person you just met to ask you this, but... I just want to know the kind of person he is, for Rachel's sake."

Mark smiled nervously, scratching the back of his ear with his hand. "I've known him long enough to know when he's serious about someone, because he has never been serious about anyone..." Mark paused, realizing he wasn't making a point. "He's not the kindest or nicest of people, but I can tell he really likes your friend."

Marina nodded. "I just want to be sure that Ethan is not going to be another David in Rachel's life."

Mark snorted as soon as he heard it. Ethan could never be as shameless and stupid as that idiot David. "Trust me, they are not the same in any way. For one, Ethan would never raise his hand to a girl."

Marina smiled. "Are you sure? What about if the girl disturbs him continually?" She asked, dragging out the word.

Mark stammered, "Well... He would just call a guard to take her out, that's if he doesn't like the girl."

"A guard?" Marina gasped dramatically. "Don't tell me you'll use force on a woman."

Mark blinked, feeling like he'd been put on the spot. "No... I... I won't, it won't..."

Mark stopped trying to find the words when he saw Marina's broad grin. He had just been played.

"Not cool," he mumbled, feeling wronged, while Marina finally let out her laughter. Mark couldn't help but smile too when he looked at her. This was the first time he was seeing a woman like this... not afraid to joke or say what's on her mind. So different from the type of ladies he grew up knowing.

When David's hands were about to touch her, he didn't even know what got into him that he rushed in front of her to protect her.

His smile grew wider as he watched her laugh. She didn't strike him as a damsel in distress kind of girl, but he felt like protecting her. What was this new feeling he was developing for a girl he just met?
