Chapter 54
Chapter 54
ADRIA’S POV
“Why would you think it’s her? When you can’t read yourselves?” I suddenly heard Monica say and she walked into the house casually, staring daggers at the girl who had accused me.
“The teachers feel it’s not the first time such is happening. Something probably happened and the student dropped the text questions and wasn’t able to return it. That was how the teachers knew someone had been stealing it and here we have a straight A student who is always having perfect scores like she had knew the questions that would come out.” The girl explained, still staring at me accusatorily. I opened my mouth to talk, but Monica interrupted.
“Tell me, big idiot. Is she the first straight A student you’ve ever seen? If she is, then you must be a huge idiot in the circle of stupid friends. If you had the right friends then surely one of them would have had straight As at least once. Why don’t you try reading and burning midnight candles, maybe then you’ll discover it’s not so hard to get perfect scores. Don’t just accuse her because she’s close with the professor you’re all dying to be close to, instead bring evidence—evidence that proves she stole the questions.” Monica shot back, the words pouring out of her mouth non-stop.
Monica was really a good friend and I wished she would find someone who had all the time in the world for her. She didn’t even wait for me to say a word, she blasted them flat.
“And what if she’s the one?” The girl asked, and Monica shook her head with a sigh.
“This is plain evidence that you’re a fool. I just talked about evidence so you ought not to ask such an annoying question. If you want to frame someone then get evidence first.” She countered, then looked at everyone. “The professor called in sick, her class is not holding.” She added and turned to me. “You want to read together under the tree?” She asked and I nodded.
Under the tree, she took in a deep breath.
“I’m sorry. I’ve been too forward lately. I really apologize. I could sense you were really angry last night.” She apologized, staring at me with a doe’s eyes.
“No, it’s fine.” I said immediately with a smile.
“I don’t know what’s wrong with me, I guess that’s why I have no friends. I just feel it can’t be for a natural reason that so many female students visit professor Lucien.”
“Do you watch Professor Lucien all the time? How do you know so many girls go into his house? Are you outside all the time?” I asked, puzzled as to how she always saw the girl.
She coughed and cleared her throat.
“It’s mostly a coincidence, but most of the time I step out of my house for a reason or the other, I always see him and he’s always smiling brightly. I tell you, Adria, he’s a different person at school, and at home.” She said with so much eagerness that it made me smile.
“Monica, it’s totally fine. You don’t need to worry so much about Professor Lucien. We don’t have a relationship like that. He’s just my tutor and I’m his student. What he does is not really my business so all this doesn’t really matter.” I told her, wishing she’d stop being so centered on Lucien.
“I… I just, I just sensed you liked him.”
“Oh my, it’s that obvious?” I asked with my hands flying to my mouth, and she chuckled.
“No, it’s just obvious to people who stay around you.” She replied, and I hit my forehead. Why was it so hard to keep my love hidden?
I and Monica studied while talking and giggling about my crush on Lucien, and when I was done with my classes, Daniel joined me.
He drew my bag backwards and I was so shocked that I turned around sharply, ready to react badly but calmed down when I saw it was just Daniel.
“You need to cool down.” He said, and I chuckled, scratching my neck in embarrassment.
“Where’s your new friend?” He asked, looking around.
“We don’t take this class together.” I replied and he nodded. “Why? You wanted to see her?” I asked.
“Nah. Stacy just said you don’t go anywhere without her.”
“Oh come on, Stacy’s overreacting, we only take two classes together and it’s because she has no friends, that’s why I try my best to reach out to her with a hand of friendship.” I explained, and he nodded slowly.
“I have no qualms about you having another friend, just make time for Stacy. You know you’re the only friend she’s got besides I and Tommy.”
“True. I’ll be more careful. By the way, where’s Tommy?” I asked, and he laughed.
“Tommy went off to chase a pretty girl who caught his eye today.” He said, and I giggled.
“Crazy Tommy.”
When Daniel left for his next class, I made sure I called Stacy to meet up with her. I wanted her to know I was there for her and enjoyed her company greatly.
“Where are you?” I asked immediately she picked up my call.
“Under the tree you love to sit and giving the boys the opportunity of staring at me all they want.” She replied, and I laughed.
“I’ll be there soon.”
Minutes later, I was running to Stacy and she waved to me.
I sat next to her and laid my head on her lap.
“Gosh, I’m tired. I just want to sleep.” I told her, and she smiled down at me.
“Sleep. We make such a nice painting for the guys to stare at.” She said, and I laughed out loud.
“What painting?” I asked, still laughing as she began to stroke my hair.
“We’re as beautiful as paintings.” She replied, and I closed my eyes smiling. She was working the magic by stroking my hair.
Then she suddenly spoke…
“I don’t like Monica.”
