Jay pulled up in the parking lot of the hospital and halted the car. Darian turned to his wife, she seemed nervous, even though she shouldn't be.
Darian ordered Jay to stay back in the car while he went on with Lena.
After waiting at the reception for a long time, a nurse finally attended to him.
"Lena, the doctor is waiting for us. This discussion can wait, right?" He said. "Come on, let's go." He got out of the car and hurried to her side to help her get the door.
He took her hands and they walked into the reception together. They were welcomed by the nurse who always attended to her during antenatal classes.
They got in, but the Doctor wasn't on the seat. They sat there waiting for him.
"Mmm? Are you okay?" He rubbed her hand.
"Yes, I am." Lena smiled.
The Doctor walked into the office, "I am sorry for keeping you waiting, something urgent came up." He shook hands with the couple.
"It's fine, we just got here," Lena looked up at Darian and he nodded positively to it.
"How have you been and how's the baby?" He asked.
"It kicked," she told him.
"Wow, that's so beautiful. The baby is healthy and today we get to decide the gender. Why do I feel she will be a girl?" The Doctor sat on the armchair and swiveled around playfully
“Can we start now?" He cleared his throat.
"Yes, sure. We can. please come over here." He stood up, gesturing to the examination table.
She hesitated, but Darian assured her it was fine, she nodded her head and went to lay on the table as ordered by the Doctor.
When she was well rested on the table, the Doctor towered over her, Darian got up from the chair he was seated on and took a few steps towards them.
The Doctor pulled Lena's shirt up to reveal her bare tummy. A few lines of stretch marks were on it. She was embarrassed, but the smile on the doctor's face made her feel at ease. Darian took her hand.
"The bump is getting bigger," he muttered, keeping an eye on the Doctor to monitor the movements of his hands on Lena's body. He wasn't always this protective of her, he didn't know why he got so upset whenever someone's hand was on her body.
"The baby must be weighing so much," the Doctor looked at Lena one more time. "It's almost the same as when we checked for the heartbeat, there is nothing to be worried about, okay?"
She nodded her head in understanding.
"Just focus your eyes on the screen," he applied some gel on her belly, moving the transducer over her skin, he pressed it against her belly. "We have to get the genital to be able to determine its gender." He told them.
"How do we know if it's a male or female?" Darian asked, his eyes fixated on the ultrasound.
"Okay, the hamburger sign or three lines represents a female genital while that of the male is represented by a turtle sign." The Doctor responded to him.
Moving the transducer against her lower abdomen, the Doctor's eyes were on the screen. Lena felt a movement in her tummy, she looked into the screen too.
There was an image that popped on the screen but it was vague, he tried again and the hamburger sign was displayed on the screen, clearly for them to see.
"It's a girl!" He declared to them.
Lena's jaw dropped, she covered her mouth with her palms and turned to Darian who was staring intently into the screen; he looked so serious, she smiled and touched him.
He lowered his gaze on her, "our baby is a girl," he said, his voice low and lacking strength.
"Yes, a girl." She smiled.
After the test was over, the Doctor wiped the gel off her tummy. "I will print the copies of the ultrasound." He helped Lena down from the table. "Congratulations to you two."
Darian was still dumbstruck. He just stood there gazing at her. She took his hand, leading him to the chair.
"Now we can buy the right dresses for her." She said. "We will start with decorating her cot, what color should it be? Pink or blue, I think white, what do you think?"
Darian didn't say a word, he watched as she talked. Not knowing what to do, he lowered his head and pressed his lips to hers. Lena blinked her eyes, but she didn't push him away. She gave in to the kiss, he pulled out before the Doctor got back into his office.
He gave two copies of the ultrasound to them, and they left the office afterward.
"I knew she was going to be a girl. Just as beautiful as you are." He took her hand and kissed it. "Thank you so much for giving me this chance to let my baby grow inside of you."
"Darian, she will be so beautiful." Was all she could come up with.
She didn't know what else to say. He told her the relationship between them wasn't fake, but she wasn't sure if he meant the baby was going to be theirs and not his only. She didn't want to ask now, he was elated and she didn't want to ruin the mood.
She fixed her eyes on him as he drove them out of the hospital. "Thanks for always staying with me, Darian." Lena linked their arms, looking up to him.
"She's our baby, I must always stay with her." He retorted, placing her head on his chest. "I am grateful to you, Lena."
"And me too, Darian. I am truly blessed to have you in my life as my husband. Thanks for all that you do."
Stillness crammed the car as Jay drove them gently. There were lots of things they had to say to each other but sometimes it was okay to just observe and not say a word.
