Darian couldn't take his eyes off his wife. She was curled up in the bed, sleeping peacefully with his hoodie wrapped around her body.
He smiled, ambling over to the bedside. He dropped the keys atop the cabinet and went into the bathroom to have a quick bath.
He had to be at the casino that morning. A lot of ammunition was delivered the night before, and Gaius had suggested that they meet up in the casino later in the morning to distribute to each member of the Dawson family and also to sort out the things they wanted to sell out to other mafia families.
"Good morning," he walked closer to her side of the bed, placing a soft kiss on her cheeks.
Lena moaned, rolling on the bed. "When did you get back?" She asked, carefully kneading her hand on her eyes.
"I just got back," he sat on the bed, looking at her as she stretched her arms. The hoodie she wore the night before was oversized, hiding her hands. She rolled the sleeves up and squinted her eyes as she stared at her husband. "Did you sleep well?" He questioned, leaving her side. He walked towards his closet to find some clothes to wear.
Lena sat up, her eyes ogling Darian's back. She bit her lips and rose to her feet, walking towards him.
"I wore your hoodie, I was cold." She said, taking the hoodie off her body.
"It fits well, you should keep it." He smiled.
"Thanks," she murmured.
Darian picked a pair of grey slacks and a white shirt, he donned them and sauntered towards the mirror to check himself.
"Are you leaving now?" She asked, surprised. She just woke up and he didn't even want to spend time with her? She slanted her head, wigging her head in disapproval. "You said you will be back for me and now you are leaving?"
He sighed. He didn't want to come up with an excuse again, he always did. He wanted her the same way she wanted him, but he had to attend to work.
"Lena,"
"You can leave," she said, inhaling sharply.
She was angry. She tried to make a normal face but it didn't work. She stopped trying and sagged her shoulders.
The thoughts of Darian leaving her again that morning stung her chest and she spewed out the words she'd been sucking inside of her for a long time.
"You said you will be there for me whenever I need you, but you've been the opposite lately. You don't stay with me for long, you spend just a few hours in the house, you are working all night, and you hardly sleep on the bed we share. You bury your head in work all the time forgetting that I have needs too." She sobbed, the thoughts of them all hurt her.
All she wanted was her husband, she understood that he was busy but it was getting too much. Even though she always told him that it was fine for him to leave, she still wanted him to stay with her, spend time with her and make her feel good.
Darian halted from doing the buttons of the shirt he wore. He turned to face her, she was sitting on the bed, tears filling her eyes.
"Lena," he touched her, but she flinched, warning him not to touch her again. He heaved an exasperated sigh. "I thought you understand this, I have to work."
"I am not deterring you from working. After all, I am the jobless one in this marriage." She sucked back the tears that threatened to fall after she wiped off the previous ones. "It's fine, you can go. I understand that you don't want to spend time with me, go and work." She straightened up.
He gripped her hand, thwarting her from moving forward. "I am sorry," he muttered.
"That's what you say all the time. You are sorry, you left me last time when I needed you so badly and now you are here leaving very early and you are telling me you are sorry? Of course, that's what you will say." She dragged her hand away from his grip and walked over to sit on the stool that was close to the mirror side.
He followed her. She wasn't the type to complain whenever he left her, he always did.
But maybe it was too much for her to hold in this time. He wanted to spend time with her too, she was the only one who always made him relaxed, he loved to sleep off in her arms, thinking about nothing but them. He loved it when she smiled at him, stared nervously into his eyes and when she just did things to make him smile, he loved to be around her but some things were important too.
"You don't have to come with me, I will go out there and look for a job to keep myself busy." She rolled her hair into a bun, her eyes fixed in the mirror.
"I am sorry I left you last night," he said. "You knew that I had to go, the call was important."
"I know, I know it was." She retorted. "And how about this morning? You just got back and you want to leave again. Did you get another important call? I am not saying that you should spend all your time with me. I am just telling you to know when to set a boundary when work is taking too much of your time and not letting you spend time with your wife."
"I will make up time for us. You know I am trying. You do know that." He looked at her but she didn't look at him. She was applying the cleansing lotion on her face before she took her morning bath.
She stopped rubbing, shrugging her shoulders, she looked at Darian. "Maybe work is just more important than I am." She said.
"Lena, why would you even say that?"
"It's obvious, Darian! You value your work more than you value me."
"Stop saying that, Lena." He yelled frustratedly. "You know that's not true."
"I don't think I know what's true anymore." She rose to her feet, walking towards her closet to sort her clothes. "Go now, we don't have to argue over this when you will still leave me."
"Lena." He leaned on the wall and watched her intently.
She was tossing her clothes on the bed; she always did that whenever she wanted to find a suitable dress to wear. Darian didn't know why she always found it difficult to arrange her clothes and just sorted them out when she needed to wear them.
It would save her the stress of hauling out clothes every time she needed them.
"Lena," he grabbed her arms. She jerked away like she was shocked by an electric current.
"Thanks for saving me last night," she laid her hands on her pajamas and smiled; that was what she had been looking for. She set it aside and started to neatly arrange her clothes back.
Darian lowered his head, heaving a sigh again. He didn't know how to appease her when she didn't want him to touch her.
"I will make it up to you, Lena." He said in a soft voice.
"I pray you don't get another call when you want to make it up to me." She mouthed.
"Lena," he called her name again; firmly and sweetly.
She wouldn't deny the fact that she loved it when Darian called her name. But today, she was angry he was leaving her and no matter what he did, she planned not to melt for him.
"Darian," she stared at him, biting her lips. "Just go, I understand that your work is important. I will get a job soon and I would not need all of your attention like I do now." She said assuredly.
"It's not safe for you to work now, those guys are still watching you." Darian shook his head in disapproval.
"So, what do you want me to do in the house all day?" She glared at him. "You and I were talking about getting a job before. You forgot because you don't have me on your mind, all you think of is your job, the Dawson family and just everything that does not include me, your wife!" She nagged.
"Lena," he grabbed her arms and didn't let go no matter how hard she fought to free herself from his tight grip. "I think of you, all the time. You are always on my mind and I will do what you want before doing what someone else wants. Don't you get it now?" He pulled her closer and she landed on his chest. His gaze burned her skin, she drooped her head and fiddled with her fingers as he delicately wrapped her under his arms. "You make me mad, Lena. So mad, I don't know what to do. Why don't you believe me?" He kissed her forehead, savouring the warmth her body produced when he pressed her against himself.
