Ex-Wife's Comeback: My Husband Failed to Kill Me

Chapter 3

Chapter 3

Karen sat on the edge of the hospital bed, her fingers trembling as she held the worn envelope marked with her grandmother’s elegant handwriting. The initials, A.D., were like a ghost’s whisper, pulling her back to memories of her grandmother’s warm but firm voice, the matriarch who had always seemed to see beyond the surface of things.

Her thumb slipped under the flap, carefully breaking the seal. Inside, she found a series of folded letters, each one written on thick, cream-colored stationery that carried a faint scent of lavender, even after all these years.

She unfolded the first letter, her heart pounding as she began to read.

“My Dearest Tori,

If you’re reading this, then something terrible has happened, and I’m no longer there to protect you. I’ve always known this day might come—our family’s power has always come with danger. There are things you don’t yet know about the Kane legacy, secrets that have been carefully hidden to keep us safe. But now, it’s time you learned the truth.

The people you think you can trust, the ones closest to you, may not be who they seem. Selena… she was never your sister, not truly. She always envied you. And Richard… he is far more dangerous than you realize.

In the event of my death, I left behind a weapon, a way to protect you and ensure our family’s enemies cannot take what is ours. It’s a dossier, hidden in a safe place only I knew. It contains evidence—enough to bring Richard and his empire crumbling down. But be warned, Tori, finding it will not be easy. You will need help.”**

Karen’s grip tightened on the paper, her stomach twisting as she read her grandmother’s words. Anna had known. She had seen through Selena’s sweet smiles and Richard’s charm, even when Karen had been blind to it.

Her eyes darted to the next page, where the tone of the letter grew even more urgent.

“If you ever find yourself alone and in danger, there is one person who may be able to help you: Darius Bennetti.

The Bennetti family and ours have a long-standing alliance, though it has always been kept quiet for good reason. Darius is powerful, but he is not without honor. If you tell him who you are and what you need, he may protect you. But trust must be earned, Tori. Do not expect it freely.”

“Darius Bennetti,” Karen whispered, the name heavy on her tongue. She vaguely remembered hearing it in hushed conversations between her grandmother and her father when she was younger. Back then, the name had seemed almost mythical, belonging to someone larger than life.

Karen reached for the next letter, her heart racing as she read on.

“You must find the dossier, Tori. It’s hidden in a place only you will understand—a place tied to the happiest moments of your childhood. The evidence inside will expose Richard’s empire for what it truly is: a web of corruption, violence, and lies.

But be careful, my darling. This path is dangerous, and you cannot trust anyone—not even those who claim to love you. Power corrupts, and love can be a mask for greed.”

Karen stared at the last line, her breath catching in her throat. Her grandmother’s words were a warning, stark and chilling.

“Not even those who claim to love you,” she murmured, Richard’s cold eyes flashing in her mind.

Her hands shook as she folded the letter back into the envelope. The dossier was the key to everything—her revenge, her survival, and her chance to take back what Richard and Selena had stolen. But where could it be? The letter’s cryptic clue lingered: a place tied to the happiest moments of your childhood.

Her mind raced, sifting through memories of laughter, of afternoons spent playing hide-and-seek in her grandmother’s sprawling estate. The garden. The gazebo. The hidden library on the second floor, where her grandmother would read to her for hours.

“It has to be there,” she whispered, her determination hardening into steel.

Her gaze fell to the window, where the city lights blinked faintly in the distance. Somewhere out there, Richard and Selena were living their lives as if they had already erased her.

Karen clenched her jaw, a fire igniting in her chest. “They think I’m gone,” she said aloud, her voice stronger now. “But I’m not. And when I come back, they’ll wish I was.”

She folded the letters carefully and placed them back in the envelope, her mind already turning to the next steps. She had to leave the hospital, find the dossier, and track down Darius Bennetti.

As Karen slid the envelope into the bedside drawer, her eyes lingered on her grandmother’s final warning: Trust no one, not even those who claim to love you. It sent a chill down her spine, but it only fueled her resolve.

“Let the games begin,” she muttered, the faintest hint of a smile tugging at her lips.
