Chapter 61 Jason Todd, and two cups of hot milk
"What happened?"
Jaeger casually closed the door, watching the scene of snakes coiling around him.
"Mmm!" The boy seemed to want to say something, but Burke covered his mouth tightly.
Burks stuck out his tongue: "Hiss hiss hiss!!"
They seemed to be quite self-righteous about it.
Jaeger knew that Burks was an intelligent snake and wouldn't do something as pointless as kidnapping someone from outside. So, it was highly likely that the boy had done something to provoke Burks into attacking.
But seeing that the boy's face had turned bright red and he looked like he was about to faint, Jaeger could only wave his hand and say, "Burks, let him go first."
"Hiss?" Burks asked with his eyes.
"Don't worry, he can't even break free from a snake, let alone beat me."
Having retrieved his [Occult Detective] deck after a long absence, Jaeger showed no signs of rust. With a flick of his wrist, he cast a binding spell on the room to prevent the boy from escaping the next time he did a somersault: "...Besides, he can't escape anyway."
Burks then released the restraints, allowing the boy to catch his breath.
"Huff, huff..." The boy gasped for breath, instinctively taking a few steps back, trying to get away from the snake that had almost suffocated him.
Burks ignored the boy and crawled towards Jaeger, who had come over and squatted down, and coiled himself around Jaeger's hand.
"Who are you?" Jaeger asked. "How did you get into my house?"
To his surprise, the boy, despite having nearly died, did not appear fearful or timid. Instead, he puffed out his chest as if trying to appear unafraid: "My name is Jason, and I live nearby."
"Jason? Doesn't he have a surname?"
"..." The boy named Jason seemed reluctant to bring it up, but after glancing at Jaeger, he finally said, "...Todd."
"Alright, Mr. Jason Todd," Jaeger said, crouching down to look him in the eye, "what are you doing here?"
"It was an accident..." Jason rubbed his face, seemingly wanting to say something swear, but ultimately didn't. He just couldn't help but look at Jaeger before quickly looking away.
This caught Jaeger's attention: "You know me? You've been looking me up and down several times."
"You're a detective who can solve weird cases, aren't you...?" Jason said. "A friend of mine once told me that a detective lives in this weird apartment building and is always killing off people on social media."
Jaeger: "..."
Damn, I almost forgot about that.
They did it because they were short of money back then, but now that they can use Langdon to support their other identity cards, delegation is not so necessary.
But unexpectedly, it actually attracted the client?
Although it was just a child who looked to be around 10 years old, it was still a commission.
"You could say that," Jaeger said, perking up. "So, do you have a case you'd like me to solve?"
“That’s right.” Jason nodded. “But when I came to knock on the door just now, I found it wasn’t locked and it opened by itself… so I thought I’d try to come in and take a look.”
"I just came in and got tangled up by your snake and almost died." Jason's tone carried a hint of resentment, and he couldn't help but steal a glance at Burks.
"It was an accident." Jaeger was a little embarrassed and subconsciously looked at Burks, asking with his eyes how he almost strangled a little boy.
Burks looked quite aggrieved: "Hiss hiss hiss!"
Jaeger thought for a moment, then raised his hand in front of Jason and used a Summoning Charm.
Then the children's drawing board that was originally on the table flew over, passed right in front of Jason, and was caught steadily in Jaeger's hand.
Jason stared wide-eyed in silence.
Jaeger handed the drawing board to Burks and fell silent as he looked at the words Burks had scrawled in crooked handwriting with his tail: "I thought this guy was an intruder."
So, Burke's snakes also serve as watchdogs?
"I understand. In short, it was a misunderstanding." Jaeger put away his drawing board and looked at Jason again. "My snake mistook you for an intruder. I apologize on his behalf."
Jason, however, was clearly no longer concerned about that; he was simply shocked: "Damn, you really do have magic?! Snakes can even write?!"
"Kid, stop using words that start with F all the time." Jaeger patted the child's head, which had a strange tuft of white hair on its forehead, with a kind smile. "And yes, otherwise why do you think I would dare to take on those weird cases?"
"But then I might not be able to afford you," Jason said dejectedly. "A magician... must charge a lot, right?"
"Hmm..." Jaeger gave an ambiguous hum, "Tell me what kind of case you want to take on. If I'm interested, I might not necessarily take your money."
"Really?!" Jason looked up instantly, his blue eyes sparkling, finally appearing like a 10-year-old child instead of the pretentious maturity he had just displayed.
“That’s right.” Jaeger stood up and pointed to the sofa next to him. “It’s not appropriate to talk like this. Why don’t we sit down and discuss it?”
"as well as……"
Jaeger's gaze swept over the boy's overly thin, somewhat scarred legs and pale skin, clearly showing signs of malnutrition. He understood immediately and casually walked towards the refrigerator: "Would you like something to drink? How about some hot milk?"
Jason unconsciously swallowed behind Jaeger's back, but pretended nothing was wrong: "I don't drink that stuff. Only kids drink that kind of stuff."
"But you are." Jaeger leaned over, pressing on the refrigerator door, and glanced at Jason behind him with a hint of mockery.
"Kids who grow up in Crime Alley aren't like the kids you imagine!" Jason retorted stubbornly. "We don't need to be pampered as we grow up."
"I didn't pamper you," Jaeger said slowly. "I just thought hot milk tasted good."
Jason: "..."
He watched as Yege truly wasn't lying; after boiling water, he not only made him a cup of hot milk but also made one for himself.
So a child of about 10 years old and an adult in his 20s sat facing each other at opposite ends of a table with two steaming cups of milk on it, creating a strange scene.
"Alright." Jaeger took a sip of milk first, then looked at Jason, who was staring blankly at the hot milk. "What do you want to entrust to me? Tell me in detail, Jason."
