Chapter 312: The Lonely Egg
Chapter 312: The Lonely Egg
The only time he had ever brought the twins here was shortly after they were born, and since then he had never brought them again.
If people insulted Qiong Xing himself, he did not care.
But those children were his treasures, and he could not bear the thought of them being hurt simply because they were beastkin.
It was not that he had intended to deceive Sergei and the others.
In fact, if they had not grown this close, Qiong Xing probably would have said everything much sooner without worrying about it at all.
But the more they talked together, shared meals, and exchanged jokes, the harder it became for Qiong Xing to say anything.
Since no one asked, he remained silent.
He did not want Sergei to reject his family, nor did he want to see Sergei become the kind of person who would reject them.
"...Paulo told me before. He said you worry too much."
"...What?"
The response was so different from what Qiong Xing had expected that it caught him completely off guard.
When he looked up from where he had been staring down, he saw an unusually gentle smile on Sergei’s face.
"I told you this before, did I not? You are still you. I would be lying if I said I was not surprised at first, both before and now, but that does not change who you are. Considering how beastkin are treated in this country, it is understandable that you stayed silent. There is no way I could blame you for that."
"..."
He was glad he chose to trust him.
Just from that expression alone, Qiong Xing could tell Sergei felt no disgust toward him and was not angry either.
"I am sorry for keeping it from you."
"It is alright. After everything I have seen, I believe I understand what kind of person you are. If someone like you chose them, then I am sure they are good people as well. That child too. It does not matter whether beastkin blood runs through her veins or not. She resembles you. She is adorable and kind. There is nothing wrong with that."
Thank goodness. Truly.
As Qiong Xing smiled through tears, Albe smiled softly as well and told him he was glad too.
"I never thought I would hear you call someone adorable."
Qiong Xing teased him lightly, and Sergei gave a faint laugh.
"This may be the first time I ever have."
The two of them ended up laughing together.
...
It was deep into the night after the sun had long since set and everyone else had fallen asleep.
Qiong Xing suddenly opened his eyes and glanced around as though searching for something.
"...?"
Yet even he did not know what he was looking for.
Still, since he was fully awake now, he knew he would not be falling back asleep anytime soon.
Thinking he might as well go for a walk, Qiong Xing quietly tried to leave the room.
"Ueh? ...Hm? Qiong Xing???"
Since everyone else was still asleep, Qiong Xing motioned for Iseul to keep his voice down before quietly leaving the room.
Even though he had been woken up so suddenly, Iseul followed along without complaint, making Qiong Xing smile softly as they headed toward their destination.
"What are you doing out this late at night?"
Despite looking sleepy himself, Raon invited them inside without any irritation.
Qiong Xing smiled apologetically. "Sorry for waking you. I somehow ended up fully awake. This little one also seems restless, so I wanted you to take a look."
As he spoke, Qiong Xing showed them the egg he had been carrying the entire time.
Both men widened their eyes in surprise.
"Huh? What is that?"
"It is really... shaking... no, wriggling?"
The egg was not moving violently, but it trembled enough to make it seem like someone inside was thrashing around.
Qiong Xing himself had been startled the first time he saw it moving like this.
He had briefly wondered whether it was hatching already, but it had only been a little over half a year since the egg was laid, so that should have been impossible.
Just in case, he had brought it to Raon to examine, but judging from his confused expression, even Raon did not know what was happening.
"It is still too early for it to hatch, right?"
"The earliest should still be around a year. I was told before that if they hatch sooner than that, there is no guarantee their body has fully developed yet."
"I see..."
Then perhaps...
"Nura, hold this."
Qiong Xing carefully handed the egg over to Iseul before taking both of their hands.
The two men tilted their heads in confusion, but Qiong Xing only smiled before slowly channeling magic through their joined hands.
"Try sending your magic into the egg together. I think this child probably will not reject you."
Raon had once said that dragon eggs only accepted the mother’s magic, but for some reason, Qiong Xing felt certain this child would be different.
The moment Qiong Xing’s magic flowed into the egg, the other two allowed their own magic to intertwine with his and enter the shell as well.
Both men looked visibly shocked when the egg absorbed their magic without resistance.
Seeing their matching expressions made Qiong Xing think once again how alike these brothers really were.
"I am sure this child was lonely. Right? It is alright now. Papa and Uncle are both here with you tonight too."
Since Qiong Xing was holding both of their hands, he could not pat the egg gently, so instead he spoke to it softly.
"Today too? Has this happened before? And how do you even know the child was lonely?"
"I met him once while I was sleeping before. He was crying and saying he was lonely."
The small child had cried over and over that he was lonely, then the moment he spotted Qiong Xing, he had shouted "Mama!" and clung tightly to him.
His beloved, precious child.
