Chapter 578: Stacey Gone Mad
Chapter 578: Stacey Gone Mad
Bianca had given him ten million dollars. It wasn’t just enough to live on. It felt like she was giving him a second chance at life.
“Bianca… thank you… Thank you…” Peter whispered, holding the card with shaking hands. He felt, for the first time, that raising Bianca hadn’t been a waste. Out of all his children, she was the only one who had truly become someone he could be proud of.
Just then, his phone rang.
It was Ashley.
Peter stared at the screen, unsure of what to do.
Back then, even though Ashley couldn’t avoid prison, Rupert’s help had reduced her sentence to just one year. By now, Ashley should’ve finished her time and been released.
“Damn it. You’re just like your mother. Neither of you ever brought me any good,” Peter muttered.
Ashley wasn’t even his real daughter. Stacey had brought her into the Scott family. To protect Stacey, Peter had treated Ashley like his own. That was why he neglected Bianca for so many years.
Peter didn’t want anything more to do with Stacey or Ashley. He turned off his phone without a second thought.
At that same moment, Ashley, freshly out of prison, was trying to call Peter. She wanted him to pick her up and take her to see Stacey. But she couldn’t reach him.
“I can’t count on men,” Ashley muttered.
All she wanted was to see her mother. With no other option, she took a taxi alone to the prison.
She felt happy. After everything she had been through, she was finally free. The world outside felt alive. The sun was bright. Everything looked fresh.
But when she arrived at the prison where Stacey was locked up, that happiness disappeared. It felt like she had fallen into a dark hole.
“Mom… Mom, what happened to you?” Ashley’s voice was broken. She couldn’t believe what the prison guard had told her.
Her mother? Crazy? That couldn’t be true.
But when Ashley saw Stacey, she froze. Stacey looked unstable. She didn’t even recognize Ashley. Instead, Stacey smiled softly, gently rubbing her flat stomach, and whispered, “Baby… you’ll be born soon.”
“Mom, look at me. It’s me, Ashley!” Ashley said, her voice shaky with worry.
Stacey suddenly glared at her and motioned for her to be quiet. “You…” Stacey paused, her voice tight and unsure. “Please lower your voice. I don’t want the baby in my belly to get scared.”
Ashley’s heart broke. This wasn’t how she imagined seeing her mother again. Stacey didn’t even recognize her. Ashley felt like she had been struck by lightning. Her hands curled into fists as frustration took over.
“It’s all Bianca’s fault!” she muttered through gritted teeth. She blamed Bianca for everything that happened to her and her mother.
Every day in prison had been hell. Revenge was the only thing that kept her going. She had imagined this moment over and over, thinking she’d find her mother broken. But instead, she felt like the one who had failed. And now, she was close to losing her mind.
She couldn’t remember how she got out of prison. She had no money and no one left to turn to. Peter’s phone wasn’t even working anymore.
Stray dogs roamed the streets around her. Ashley felt like one of them, lost and unwanted. No, she was worse off. At least the dogs had each other. She had no one.
“Just wait, Bianca,” she whispered. “Sooner or later, I’ll ruin you. You’ll beg for death. You’ll feel every bit of the pain I’ve felt. No, I’ll make sure you suffer even more.”
After saying that, Ashley forced herself to calm down. If she wanted revenge, she needed to think straight. First, she had to find food and a place to rest. Only then could she start planning how to destroy Bianca.
But then, her stomach growled loudly. She had been running around all day without eating. Now, she was completely drained.
She found a small burger stand by the side of the road. She ordered a simple cheeseburger with fries. Before, she wouldn’t have touched food like this. It had to be fancy burgers with truffle fries to match her tastes. But now, everything was different.
Ashley, fresh out of prison, had left her old life behind. She ate the cheeseburger quickly, washing it down with a soda. To her surprise, it actually tasted good.
As she sat there, she thought about how everything went wrong. In her heart, she cursed Bianca again, wishing she could tear her apart. But right now, she couldn’t do anything. She didn’t even have money to pay for her food.
“I don’t have any money,” she said quietly.
“You’re broke?” the owner said, frowning as he cleared the plates and rolled up his sleeves. “Trying to eat and run, miss? You can’t even pay for a ten-dollar burger?”
Ashley had never been in a situation like this before, but she wasn’t clueless. Seeing the owner getting ready to confront her, she quickly pulled out some jewelry, the only things she had left from prison. They had been returned to her when she was released.
“Um…” she said softly. “I’ll pawn these to you. I’ll buy them back once I have money.”
She hurriedly took off her earrings. They were from Van Cleef & Arpels and easily worth twenty grand. But she had no choice.
The owner, a heavyset man who didn’t know much about jewelry, looked at them but couldn’t tell how valuable they were. He called out, “Hey, honey, come here. Can you tell if this is worth anything?”
His wife walked over, wiping her hands. She looked at the earrings and then at Ashley. “I don’t know either,” she said quietly. She looked at Ashley kindly. “You don’t seem like someone who’s poor. You must be having a hard time. We don’t need these. Just go. Pay us back when you can.”
Ashley frowned as she took the earrings back from the woman. “Idiot,” she muttered. “These earrings are worth more than all the burgers you’ll ever sell. If you don’t want them, fine.”
“Hey, young lady, no need to speak like that,” the owner said, his tone turning cold. “My wife was trying to help you. No need to be rude.”
“We run a small business,” he went on. “We’re not here to take advantage of anyone. If your earrings are really worth something, we won’t take them. You clearly have money, so pay for your meal. Otherwise, I’ll just call the police. The station’s nearby.”
