Chapter 153
Chapter 153
When these words were spoken, all the bodyguards present were shocked. Theo was filled with disbelief.
"What did you say? You're going to declare war on me in the manner of the Livingston family?" Theo almost laughed out loud. "Do you know what you're talking about?"
Carl's face hardened for a moment as well. "Kingsley, calm down!"
Kingsley, however, paid no attention to him. He stared into Theo's eyes, showing no hint of hesitation or fear. He said, "I know exactly what I'm doing, so don't you dare underestimate me."
This declaration made Theo's face darken, his expression obscure, filled with deep thoughts.
Charlotte looked at Chris somewhat helplessly. She didn't understand what was happening. Was this a big gamble by Kingsley?
Chris composed himself, looked towards Kingsley and Theo's confrontation, and softly explained, "The Livingston family has rules. Members can challenge each other when there are disputes or unavoidable conflicts. They fight one-on-one in a life-and-death duel. The winner takes everything the loser has—status, power, position, all of it.
"Theo was kicked out of the Livingston family long ago, and his name was struck from the genealogy. Wherever he goes, all members of the Livingston family, whether from the main line or even side branches, see him as a disgrace and a public enemy."
Now Kingsley was challenging him, using the rules of the Livingston family. This meant re-recognizing Theo as part of the family, then fighting to the death.
"It's a bet that Kingsley has engineered against Theo, and the stakes are high for both of them," Chris explained clearly.
Theo was now in Kingsley's hands, but Theo still held the lives of everyone here in his hands. Even if Kingsley let him go, there was a chance that Theo would kill everyone here once he left. No matter how much they evacuated the crowd, it would be difficult to avoid casualties.
Not to mention, Kingsley was not willing to give up such a good opportunity to kill his enemy and let Theo leave easily. So Kingsley made a life-and-death pact with him.
He used the temptation of returning to the Livingston family and the possibility of Theo taking back everything he currently held to make Theo waver.
If Theo agreed to return to the Livingston family in public and then lost the duel, he would once again be a disgrace to the family.
Even if he managed to turn it around later, it was a shame ingrained in his bones that could never be washed away. And what would Theo choose? Would he really accept this challenge?
It also meant that he would give up all his existing advantages just to gain recognition as a member of the Livingston family.
The atmosphere felt eerily silent, thick with tension and suffocation. After a long pause, Theo finally chuckled softly. "Kingsley! I have to admit, you really know how to strike a deal with me!"
"And I suppose the premise of this bet is for me to defuse all the bombs, right?" Theo saw through almost all of Kingsley's thoughts but had to play along.
Kingsley made no secret of his purpose, yet it coerced Theo to agree.
"Fine, then let's do it," Theo said. "We'll have an honorable match as members of the Livingston family. I lost to your father back then, and now I'm going to take it back from you!"
Kingsley's face remained coldly handsome as he commanded, "Go disarm the bomb."
Carl glanced at him and clenched his teeth before gesturing, "Follow me."
The bodyguards around Kingsley withdrew.
Theo's subordinates looked surprised, some even seemed inclined to take action against Kingsley.
However, Kingsley remained calm and composed.
Theo narrowed his eyes and spoke in a cold voice, "Go. Be quick, don't delay our business."
The meaning was clear: let the bodyguard disarm the bomb.
The bodyguards behind Theo showed reluctance but dared not say anything, all retreated.
Soon, the once-crowded place emptied in an instant.
Besides Kingsley and Theo, only Chris and Charlotte remained. Kingsley finally turned to Charlotte, his expression softening.
"Charlotte, I need you to keep an eye on them for me."
Charlotte, however, shook her head, her eyes heavy with tears. She knew Kingsley was trying to distance her. But how could she leave at this time?
Kingsley's chances of winning a game that Theo had staked everything on were really good? What if something happened to him? What would she do?
"Please, I can't leave..."
Kingsley gazed gently at every inch of her face, as if etching her into his memory. Then he looked at Chris with a pleading expression.
Chris's demeanor became unusually solemn. The two men exchanged a silent understanding. After a solemn nod from Chris to Kingsley, he gently lifted Charlotte, restraining her, and walked towards the exit.
"Chris... I can't go..."
Charlotte struggled to choke back a sob, tears blurring her vision. Chris didn't stop walking, only whispering, "Don't let him distract you. You have to trust him."
All of Charlotte's resistance melted away at his words. She clutched Chris's shirt and looked over his shoulder at Kingsley, sobbing uncontrollably.
In the last instant before her departure, she vaguely saw Theo pounce on Kingsley, a flash of silver in his sleeve. That was a razor-sharp blade. The scene shifted as she entered the cloister, no longer able to see what was happening behind her.
Charlotte's emotions overwhelmed her, and she whimpered, sinking her teeth into Chris's shoulder.
"Good girl, don't be afraid," Chris said softly, soothingly. "You have to trust him."
Charlotte sobbed and trembled. Trust him... Yes, she had to trust him; she had to wait for him.
Trying to calm her emotions, Charlotte suppressed her fear and sadness, managing to say calmly, "Chris, just put me down."
"Charlotte..." Chris uttered, sounding worried.
"Chris, trust me. I just want to help him," Charlotte said earnestly. "He said he wanted me to help oversee the situation here, and I want to help him."
Chris sniffed in relief and rubbed her long hair after setting her down. "Looks like my little sister Charlotte is really growing up."
With Chris's assistance, the Scott family had mobilized a large contingent of men. Theo's men led the way, with the Scott family and Kingsley's men lining up one by one, quickly clearing the school of explosives.
