Chapter 135
Chapter 135
Diana and Charlotte turned toward the door simultaneously, catching sight of Chris entering with a stern expression, trailed by Ian.
Charlotte paused momentarily, then comprehended Chris's recent remark. She promptly rose to her feet and retorted loudly, "It's none of your business. I have the right to choose whom I love!"
"Chris..." Chris's sudden appearance caught Diana off guard, and she was unaware of how much of her conversation with Charlotte he had overheard.
Diana's complexion slightly paled. Although she hadn't agreed to aid Charlotte in concealing Chris and the others, she didn't want them to be aware of Charlotte's involvement with Kingsley, especially under these circumstances.
She took a deep breath, calming herself before continuing, "The crucial matter here is that Charlotte is in love with Kingsley of the Livingston family. You need to clarify why you implied that Charlotte shouldn't have feelings for Kingsley. Could it be that..."
"You investigated Kingsley, didn't you?" Diana pondered for a moment before interjecting.
Chris nodded. "Fifteen years ago, the Livingston family underwent a significant scandal. Kingsley's parents perished in a car accident, and his uncle was ousted from the family. The exact details are unclear," Chris whispered, "but his family background is quite intricate. Therefore, I have reservations. I don't approve of Charlotte being with him."
After stating his concerns, Chris regarded Charlotte earnestly.
While they might appreciate Kingsley as a business partner, Chris, Aaron, and Ian would not endorse him as a potential brother-in-law.
They would prefer Charlotte to marry someone from a less prominent family than someone entangled in such complexity.
"But," Charlotte locked eyes with Chris, "I love him, and it's not about his family. Chris, you can't judge Kingsley solely based on his family and your own biases. You hardly know him!"
"If it were merely due to his family, I wouldn't dissuade you from loving him, but Kingsley is a risky prospect!"
With that declaration, Chris roughly recounted what he had discovered about Kingsley's condition during his recent episode and his subsequent prognosis after consulting with the doctor.
Charlotte was taken aback by his words. "So, you mean his emotional and mental well-being are in question?"
"Uh-huh. From what I've gathered, it's a rare mental illness, akin to dissociative identity disorder, manifesting as a vicious, paranoid, and cruel alter ego. On ordinary days, he seems just like anyone else, but he can't endure too many emotional fluctuations. When faced with intense stimuli, he experiences episodes where the cruel persona takes over, leading to violent outbursts and loss of rationality. Kingsley developed this condition fifteen years ago, coinciding with a significant upheaval in the Livingston family. Whether this event is linked to Kingsley's illness remains uncertain..."
"Charlotte, you mustn't be with Kingsley," Chris interjected firmly.
"Diana, I don't condone your involvement with such a dangerous individual either," Diana added, gripping Charlotte's hand. "You're our cherished princess. You're not suited for someone as complex as him."
"Diana...," Charlotte turned to her sister, a hint of confusion in her expression. "You know, while I was being bullied during drama club rehearsals, he stood up for me. Yet, he kept his distance. Do you know why?"
"Because he didn't want to hurt me," Charlotte stated, the vacancy in her eyes giving way to determination. "Diana, I can't pinpoint when he began caring for me, but I sense that he's been shielding me in his own way, reluctant to inflict harm. That's why I trust him. I'll stand by him and face everything together."
Diana gazed at her in disbelief.
"Charlotte, he's even more ruthless and paranoid than you realize," Ian finally spoke up, his voice cool and solemn. "The Livingston family dynamics are far more intricate than ours, and Kingsley's upbringing differs vastly from yours. You were raised in a nurturing environment, surrounded by beauty, your innocence akin to a blank canvas. But Kingsley, he was lost at a young age, returning to the Livingston family with an indomitable stubbornness. His mind is labyrinthine, his paranoia profound, a world apart from yours. I doubt you two can coexist harmoniously for long. Charlotte, I implore you to reconsider, to not jeopardize your life due to a fleeting emotional blindness."
Charlotte fell into a prolonged silence after Ian's words landed. She realized that once her family learned of the situation, they would likely oppose it.
"I don't care about his circumstances. I'll stand by him," Charlotte asserted firmly.
"You!" Diana was taken aback by Charlotte's resolve and exclaimed in shock, "Are you out of your mind?"
"Diana, Chris, Ian, you know me," Charlotte spoke softly, "Since childhood, whatever decision I make, I stick to it."
"Charlotte Scott!" Chris gasped, using her full name, "Why have you become like this?"
"Chris..." Seeing him so upset with himself, Charlotte felt a pang of sadness. "I've grown up making choices and facing the consequences. Please believe me, okay?"
Meanwhile, at a five-star hotel in Germied.
Kingsley finished washing up and reclined on the bed, his eyes widening at the goodnight message from Diana. A knock interrupted his moment of contemplation.
His smile vanished as he composed himself into his usual cold demeanor. "Come in."
Carl entered, holding a metal tray containing Kingsley's medication for his condition. "Kingsley, you haven't taken it for a few days. Dr. Waltman advised tapering off slowly, not abruptly."
Dr. Waltman, a renowned psychiatrist, had been Kingsley's personal physician for a long time.
Kingsley glanced wearily at the medication on the tray. With resignation, he swallowed it with a gulp of water. "I'll take it once a week at most from now on. I'm quitting this drug."
